UK - Rigging training and equipment supplier Lyon Equipment has just opened a brand new, purpose-built training facility in the north of England. Robin Johnson paid it a visit.

Situated by the M6 motorway in Tebay, Cumbria, it's only a dark-green tower that gives away the location of Lyon Equipment's brand new rigging training facility.

Such is the amount of training now undertaken by Lyon that the company's previous training centre - 10 miles away at its HQ in the picturesque village of Dent - was not enough to satisfy demand. Although training at Dent will continue, building a new facility gave Lyon the chance to design a practical training facility literally from the ground up.

Taking time out from instructing a Greenpeace group doing IRATA Level 1, Lyon's Paul Witheridge showed me round. "We already owned this building and used it as extra warehouse space," he says. &

UK - An exclusive new members club opened its doors in June, revealing a striking visual interior. Design and brand consultant, David Collins, has created a space designed to stimulate all the senses. With a capacity of just 100, the subterranean Kabaret's Prophecy in Beak Street, Soho, hosts a display of visual stimulation created to "redefine the concepts of environmental design".

Constructed from modular intelligent LED pixel blocks, two of the venue's walls act as backdrops upon which graphics and animations, triggered from a real-time generator or MIDI keyboard, create a constantly morphing environment. Clad in Barco's proprietary MiPIX system and displaying intelligent lighting effects, 3D logos or graphics - even full video content - these moving images curve around the contours of the walls and wrap into the alcoves, giving a strangely three-dimensional depth t

USA - Chicago Sound has completed the installation of a large Apogee outdoor system for the lawn at the Petrillo Music Shell in downtown Chicago's Grant Park, home of the Grant Park Symphony and Chicago's free Summer Music Festivals. The Apogee system was selected by Ian Hunt, president of Chicago Sound, the sole vendor for all City of Chicago public events and one of the largest Apogee dealers in the Midwest. Chicago Sound installed 16 Apogee AFI-8SX loudspeakers, configured in two inner rings of six speakers, and an outer ring of four speakers placed 300 feet from the stage.

Hunt chose the Apogee AFI-8SX system to replace the music shell lawn's loudspeaker system. He commented: "We were looking to replace the speaker system with a modern, high-output, loudspeaker system that would provide better coverage and sound levels. We chose the Apogee AFI-8SXs because we thought th

USA - Lighting designer John Featherstone used Robe Show Lighting's powerful ColorSpot 1200 AT fixtures to light the Eidos stand at the 2004 E3 exhibition - the definitive trade show for electronic gaming industry professionals, held at the LA Convention Centre. Featherstone and his consultancy, Lightswitch, has designed the lighting for Eidos presentations at E3 since 1997.

For Eidos, the primary aesthetic objective was to make the booths 'speak' to the dynamic pace of the games being showcased, ensuring they stand out from the crowd in a highly competitive marketplace. Eidos use a series of 'vignettes' designed by 3D Exhibits to anchor the central theme of each game, and provide a visual tableau to present the software. Eidos has always utilized lighting to help support this technique, adding layers of texture, colour and movement to the displays.

UK - PCM has supplied Lodestar double-braked motors to Adlib Audio for its high profile audio installation at the Villa Marina complex in Douglas, Isle of Man. The Lodestars, flying the main PA arrays, were chosen because their high spec' and double-braking feature means the venue doesn't have to call a rigger to adjust the safety steels every time the installed PA needs to move for maintenance or other adjustments. The same applies if a visiting production brings in their own PA which has to be flown.

Adlib's Andy Dockerty thinks this will become much more common in the future, because it saves time, and at the end of a show, a visiting crew can get their equipment in and de-rigged with a minimum of hassle. Dockerty has used Lodestars supplied by PCM for Adlib's touring work for many years, because of their proven reliability and excellent safety record.

The event saw the launch of Network AV's new arch roof staging system that featured as the central focal point for all the arena action. This new Network AV stage is expected to be in strong demand for festivals, city centre entertainments, fashion shows and exhibition stands, with flexible steel deck flooring and independent truss structure. For this event, the roof was undressed to increase light flow, although it does come with full roof and side covering for weather protection, say Network AV.
