UK - i-Pix supplied a special package of BB4, BB7 and BB16 LED fixtures to Electric Fly Productions, show and lighting designers for the main stage, four arenas and two outdoor terrace areas at the 2009 Global Gathering dance event. This was staged at Long Marsden Airfield in Staffordshire, UK.

Electric Fly's Nick Jevons wanted to use specific fixtures for certain special effects. "I approached i-Pix because I could think of several areas that were ideal for their very high quality homogenised light output - which doesn't even resemble an LED fixture - and they came to the party with great enthusiasm," he says.

i-Pix Chris Ewington adds: " Nick is one of the most innovative lighting designers and his work is always interesting. Our products have all been developed after careful and considered end-user feedback, so events like this present great opportunit

Germany - In July, XL Video equipped the two largest German motorsport events with video walls. The company was engaged as a full service provider for both the formula one racing from the 10-12 July at the Nürburgring and for the motorbike grand prix at the Sachsenring from 17-19 July. Due to the very short interval of time between the two races, most of XL Video's video trucks drove straight from the Nürburgring once the task of dismantling the installation was complete to the Sachsenring to begin setting up for the next event.

For the first event at the Nürburgring XL Video deployed almost 500sq.m of LED equipment. This included two 80-square-metre LED video trucks, five 50sq.m LED video trucks and two Mitsubishi DV 10 modular video walls that were mounted on the roof of the pit lane.

At the Sachsenring, 13 video walls with a combined LED video display area of 420sq.m pro

UK - When LexisNexis, a supplier in the business information market, decided to revamp the PartnerPoint meeting room at its London office, it approached Projection Advertising for inspiration and guidance. The brief was to transform a rather outdated meeting room into a leading edge media suite.

After exploring various options they were sold on the AdWindow, the projected capacitance touch screen, using Paradigm AV touch foil technology.

It was essential that the system could be used to access information in the LexisNexis annals - claimed to be the largest online archive of legal and accounting resources in the world. A Windows based platform, AdWindow integrated seamlessly into the established network - the core of the company's business - putting information at the user's fingertips.

The Great Green Debate - U2 guitarist The Edge has defended the size and cost of their current world tour. Last month, protests delayed the removal of the custom-built set from Ireland, and it also came under fire from Talking Heads singer David Byrne. The three steel structures cost between £15m and £20m each, offering a largely unobstructed view of the rock quartet. Speaking to BBC 6 Music backstage at Wembley, The Edge said, "We're spending the money on our fans, I don't think there's a better thing you could spend it on."

Despite it being the most ambitious stage set of any band's world tour, topping the likes of Madonna and The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne was not impressed. He slammed the band on his blog and said their world tour costs were "excessive", considering their stance on world hunger. He wrote: "$40 mill

UK - Triple E recently refurbished the masking system for the projection screen in the theatre in London's National Gallery. Situated in the Sainsbury Wing, the 328 seat theatre plays host to a wide range of events including lunchtime talks, lectures, films and study days, as well as private events on behalf of the Gallery's corporate sponsors.

This is the first refurbishment of the multi use theatre since the Sainsbury Wing was built in 1991 and the existing track and motors were not just old, but also unreliable. With such a wide variety of events, and the fact that it's sometimes necessary to swap screen formats within the same event, Jon Sheldon, senior audio-visual technician at The National Gallery, needed a system that was flexible, quiet and accurate.

David Edelstein, managing director of Triple E, said: "We had been working on a new product, Chainbeam, which inco

This extended area stretches the full width of Edinburgh Castle's walls at the far end of the Esplanade/arena, forming a dramatic backdrop to the performance space.

E/T/C London's Ross Ashton designed and produced custom artwork for the high impact projections which run for approximately 50% of the show. This is the most that projected images have been used to date since the medium was first introduced into the Tattoo's visual mix in 2005.

Lee Minich, President of the engineering design firm, says that the decision to grow in the midst of a broadly shrinking economy almost made itself.

UK - Arcstream AV was commissioned by music video directors Between the Eyes to create the visual laser effects in the video for Sugababes new single Get Sexy.

The video sees the singers enclosed in a cylinder of mirrors and Arcstream AV had to devise a way of creating the special effects within the cylinder. By installing a 10 watt RGB laser and diffraction mirrors within the cylinder and feeding the lasers and a camera through a small aperture in the side of the cylinder, the action within the enclosed area could be captured without disrupting the laser stream.

Wayne Haxton, director of Arcstream AV explained: "Capturing the images was a challenge due to the tight space restrictions, so we used defraction mirrors to bounce the laser beams within the cylinder allowing them to be directed."

Record-Breaking Fringe - The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has broken its own box office records by selling more than 1.8 million tickets. Ticket sales for the Fringe were up by 21% on last year and 9% on its previous best ever year, which was in 2007. Organisers said a drop in international visitors had been offset by a marked increase in UK audiences.

The 63rd Fringe, which ended on Monday night, was the first with new chief executive Kath Mainland at the helm. She said, "Even in tough economic conditions, festivals chime with people in a way few other events manage to. Over the past three-and-a-half weeks I have seen some amazing work, sometimes perfectly trivial and enormously entertaining, sometimes incredibly challenging and often hugely moving. I have been blown away by the creative energy, artistic vision and drive of the people taking part, from performers and director
