UK - Highlighting the growing trend to digital audio for the world's biggest music-for-TV shows, Richmond Studios' Toby Alington, contracted to record and post produce his 12th successive BRIT Awards, has confirmed that this year's show will go 'fully digital' for the first time and be recorded digitally for broadcast using Floating Earth's latest SSL C200-equipped recording mobile.

The event's production will see significant changes - the show will move back to the giant Earls Court 1 arena after several years in EC2. The move to digital in the BRITs' broadcast audio follows the successful transition to digital of the live PA sound by the long-standing team of sound designer Derrick Zieba and PA supplier Britannia Row Productions.

The Netherlands - Sound Leisure Retail (SLR) had its display products present on two stands at the recent Horecava Show in Amsterdam. Versatile Video Systems and Bubbles were supplied to the Budweiser/Guinness and Corona stands at the hospitality exhibition, which is held at the RAI International Exhibition Centre from 9-21 January 2006.

Belgium - Martin's Maxedia Digital Media Composer was used on one of Belgium's biggest televised musical events of 2005, the TMF Awards. Held at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, the show's visual elements included a combination of lighting and video effects designed by independent Belgian LD Michiel Milbou.

Besides controlling 73 PixelLine LED fixtures, the Maxedia was used to pixel map 24 automated lights located inside set-cubes on stage. Through DMX merge-channels a seamless crossfade was done from the ArtNet input of the Maxedia to the video pixel mapping of the Maxedia output. A total of 11 DMX universes were pixel mapped on the Maxedia during the four-hour live broadcast event.

Sweden - Lighting specialist Spectra supplied creative design and production management services, plus all lighting and AV equipment to the prestigious 2005 Nobel Prize Awards Banquet, staged at the Blue Hall of Stockholm's City Hall.

Sweden's highest profile event of the year was attended by the King, Queen and other members of the Royal Family, a host of Nobel Laureates, politicians, dignitaries and VVIPs - around 1,400 guests in all. The entire evening was broadcast live on Swedish National television's SVT1.

UK - XL Video was poised to supply the NEC's largest ever sit-down meal event ('Thomson's Festive Fiesta' for 5, 800 people) with full video, audio and lighting production and technical services on 14 December - when the Buncefield fuel storage depot in Hemel Hempstead exploded at 6:03a.m. on Sunday 11 December. Injuring 43 people but miraculously with no loss of life, this triggered the UK's largest peacetime inferno, which raged for three days.

XL's warehouse, located just 600m from the epicentre of the explosion, was damaged in the blast, and the entire area was sealed off, including the truck-full of gear destined for the Thomson event. UK - XL Video UK supplied equipment to video artists Yeast Culture for their inventive work on the Jamie Cullum tour. The show featured three upstage 10 by 7.5 ft screens, showing an eclectic and fluid mix of animations, pre recorded footage, colour and effects, plus live camera feeds of Cullum. The screens were deliberately trimmed low to bring a sense of intimacy and close proximity to the stage to the audience.

Yeast Culture was formed by Nick Hillel and Marc Silver six years ago. They create music visuals, art installations, films and documentaries. Two years ago, Cullum saw a Yeast performance and asked them to work with him.

UK - Lancashire's new Digital Technology Centre is showcasing its groundbreaking technology using a "virtual reception" display. The centre in Burnley has installed a hi-tech visual communications system that uses a large holographic screen provided by Visual Planet, to provide changing information and directions for visitors.

UK - Creative Media Techniques (CMT), working for Cake Media, produced spectacular projections onto five of London's premier financial institutions for the launch of the new Motorola SLVR mobile phone handset.

CMT's project manager Richard Hawkins says, "Cake's Gary Wilson approached us saying that they wanted to achieve a transformation of the city skyline using projected images of the phone and the Motorola 'bat wings' logos."

The targeted buildings were: the Old Stock Exchange (two fascias), Tower 42 (aka The Nat West Tower), Deutsche Bank, Lloyds and the old Barclays HQ. Two locations were used for rigging the projectors - on top of the Royal Exchange, and the roof of a derelict building across the road, at 67 Lombard Street.

South Africa - Two of the biggest players in their respective fields, Gearhouse South Africa and Dimension TV have embarked on a joint venture in the arena of LED screens. The new company, LEDVision (Pty) Ltd, came into operation countrywide on 1 November 2005 and lays claim to the largest product stockholding of the latest high-resolution outdoor product, Lighthouse Ri/o 16 and popular Optiscreen system in southern Africa.

UK - Farnborough International Ltd, organiser of the world's largest airshow, has appointed ATC/PSL as its official AV and IT equipment supplier for its July 2006 event.

Farnborough International Airshow 2006 is again set to be the biggest, most internationally attended aerospace event in the world.

Although Potters Bar-based ATC (Aviation Television & Communication) has been a regular supplier to the Farnborough Air Show, this is the first time that the joint resources of ATC and its new parent group PSL will be combined, providing seamless and fully integrated delivery of the Show's AV and IT equipment requirements from a single source.

UK - Following their success in 2005, Hawthorn has organised a new series of events to take place at its base in Old Dalby in Leicestershire. The 'Hawthorn@Home 2006' events will give lighting, sound and AV users the opportunity to get 'hands-on' with the latest equipment and technology. The events also aim to give manufacturers, suppliers and users to discuss the products and to gain an insight not normally available outside large tradeshows, say Hawthorn.
