Spain - As Barcelona hosted the biggest mobile industry show in the world in March, Orbital Sound's conference and events team moved into action with a high profile corporate event organised by global creative agency Imagination.

Staged at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the project involved a VIP evening's entertainment hosted by the MWC's headline sponsor, a major Chinese telecoms manufacturer. The project involved over 100 performers, taking part in an extravaganza that included flamenco dancers, hip hop, a 50-piece orchestra, and a full choir across three central stages, as well as in the balcony space - performed in front of an invited audience of some 1200.

The inspiration of Imagination's head of sound design John Del' Nero, the show sound was supervised by Seb Frost, and involved a technical crew of seven from Orbital Sound, under events director Eric Simpson. F

UK - Allen & Heath has released a major firmware upgrade for its Qu series of compact digital mixers, paired with key enhancements to the Qu-Pad and Qu-You apps.

V1.7 ArcLight firmware now allows up to two iPads running Qu-Pad to be connected to a Qu mixer at the same time. New features in Qu-Pad include saving and recall of processing and FX libraries, a third custom layer for easy access to any combination of inputs, mixes, DCAs, Mute Groups or SoftKeys, full control over key FX parameters, the ability to store and recall scenes, plus access to the mixer SoftKeys. USA - Danley Sound Labs has appointed three master distributors: Danley Europe, headed by Marko Lönngren in Finland, Danley Asia, headed by Nicholas Loe in Singapore, and Danley Australia, headed by Steve Anderson in New South Wales. The master distributors provide Danley with the needed infrastructure to speed delivery, service, and support to all of its international customers.

USA - When Deer Park High School, in the eponymously named suburb of Houston, underwent a massive expansion during the last decade, it emerged as a true 21st-century educational centre including a 1,500-seat proscenium theatre - the Deer Park High School Performing Arts Centre - that allows the school to properly host ambitious theatrical productions and other events.

Recently, the PAC underwent a significant audio/video systems retrofit, at the heart of which is an L-Acoustics Kiva line source array system. The new audio setup was designed and installed by the Houston-based systems integration division of LD Systems, which also has locations in Austin and San Antonio.

USA - Allen & Heath digital systems were used at numerous venues hosting the SXSW Music Festival, one of the world's largest music conferences with 100+ music venues, held recently in Austin, Texas, USA. Most notably, GLD managed the entire sound reinforcement and sound streaming duties for the British Music Embassy held at Latitude 30, and the flagship iLive system managed live streaming at the Fader Fort.

Dual GLD systems split via Dante were installed at the British Music Embassy, the hub of British Music at SXSW. The set up comprised a GLD-112 with AR84 and AR2412 racks and AB-168 stagebox at FOH, and a GLD-80 expanded with an AR2412 and two AR84s for monitors. A broadcast multi-track feed for the BBC was also taken from the Dante network. The system was complemented with a Tannoy VQ-Live rig powered by Lab.gruppen amplifiers.

Germany - A Martin Audio MLA Mini, featuring the company's award-winning Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array technology, is playing a central role in the technical upgrade of the Elspe Festival in Germany. One of the largest and most visited show and festival parks in Europe, the 120,000sq.m site is located in the Sauerland Elspe, in Olpe, South Westphalia.

Each year Elspe Festival invests heavily in conservation and upgrading of the infrastructure to preserve its wild west theme, and welcome the Karl May Festival. This is when Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, fictional characters in the Western novels by the German writer, take their place in Germany's largest outdoor theatre.

Last year, renewal of the audio system was high on the agenda and sound consultant Ulrich Schmitz knew it had to cast its spell on the 200,000 people who congregate each year.

USA - Southern Adventist University, recognized as one of the top tier southern regional colleges, recently took delivery of a substantial sound-reinforcement system incorporating loudspeakers drawn from the catalogue of WorxAudio Technologies, a division of PreSonus Audio Electronics. Deployed in the Iles Physical Education Centre, the facility upgrade includes elements from WorxAudio's TrueLine and WaveSeries series.

Uruguay - The Sodre National Auditorium (Auditorio Nacional del Sodre) in Uruguay has chosen a self-powered Meyer Sound Mina line array loudspeaker system as the first permanent reinforcement system in the 1,900-capacity venue. The upgrade has ushered in a new era for the vibrant local arts community, which now has a performance space that shares high-quality reinforcement with Mina-equipped halls such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Festhalle in Germany.

France - The newly opened Philharmonie de Paris, a state-of-the-art building complex designed to host international symphonic ensembles, including the Orchestre de Paris, features Amadeus speakers throughout each of the many musical venue spaces; from the large rehearsal space with public seating, to practice rooms, to the Grande Auditorium and the Music Exhibition and conference rooms, plus the two on-site recording studios. Canada - Sennheiser lit up the Juno Awards of 2015 with pristine and reliable audio, held at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton earlier this month. The Juno Awards, which have existed since 1970 and represent the pinnacle of Canadian recognition for technical and artistic achievement in music, were broadcast on CTV Television Network and hosted by Jacob Hoggard, lead singer of pop-rock group Hedley. USA - To expand its touring rental business, DBS Audio Systems, Inc. of Coatesville, Penn. has invested in a Meyer Sound Lyon linear sound reinforcement system in advance of a busy summer concert season.

"Lyon has won accolades from major artists and respected engineers and will give us an excellent position in the touring market," says Dave Brotman, DBS president. UK - Allen & Heath has launched the Xone:43, a classic 4 + 1 channel analogue DJ mixer with a host of enhanced features, including the legendary Xone filters, X:FX routing, 3 band EQ, VCA faders, and adjustable crossfader.

At the heart of the mixer is the renowned analogue Voltage Control Filter (VCF) system offering HPF, BPF, LPF, frequency sweep and 'mild to wild' resonance control. The Xone:43's intuitive and simple to use X:FX feature provides a single control per channel over the send/return to work with external FX units. Canada - When Canadian alt-rock heroes The Tragically Hip put together a 2015 North American tour supporting the deluxe reissue of their 1992 studio classic, Fully Completely, the band's longtime audio provider, Solotech, made the decision to carry an audio system based entirely on L-Acoustics' K2 line array system.

"The Hip," as they are known to their legion of north-of-the-border fans, are touring behind the re-release of one of their biggest records, and the trek has been a "big deal" with staging that includes projection screens extending into areas normally reserved for the main PA hangs. UK - The current joint UK HQ for Studiomaster and Carlsbro sales distribution and service is expanding to take on the role of a northern European logistics centre for the two marques. Studiomaster and Carlsbro product development and engineering will remain at the Milton Keynes site.

With the move, the Milton Keynes HQ will now directly supply retailers and resellers in Great Britain and most of mainland northern Europe. Sales agents are already appointed for France and Benelux, with appointments for Germany and Austria to follow imminently.

Current distributor agreements for existing distribution in Europe, including in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Eire, Norway, Poland, Hungry and Slovenia, for both Studiomaster and Carlsbro, are to remain in effect and will not be included in the new centralized arrangements for other territories.

Germany - At Frankfurt this year, Pan Acoustics will feature the Dante option for Pan Beam series, Pan Speaker series and Pan Powerline.

The Dante option offers some interesting features: for example, Pan Beam columns can be operated with two independent audio streams with a sampling frequency of up to 192 kHz. The priority circuit in the Pan Beam columns allows automatic switchover of the audio source, for instance switching between programme and announcement signals.

Pan Acoustics' Dante option provides a primary and secondary port, which can be used in redundant or daisy-chain mode. The latter enables other compatible Dante devices, such as a digital stagebox, to be added into the network. Pan Beam models can be set and monitored via the Dante audio network (directivity, EQ, delay, etc) Switching presets, saved in the Pan Beam column speakers, is also possible.
