UK - With PLASA moving to its new home at the Excel Centre in East London, SSE Audio Group designed a new bigger stand for this year's exhibition. SSE were exhibiting for the first time as the combined group that includes Wigwam Acoustics.

The four day show was an opportunity to present all the different elements that make up SSE and explain how they fit and work together within the organisation. On the stand staff from Hire, Sales, Installations along with Wigwam, ETA Sound & Canegreen were all in attendance.

The design of the stand enabled SSE to display an impressive range of products at the show. UK - Investment to upgrade the technical infrastructure of regional theatres tends to come along very rarely so, when it is available, technical managers need to choose equipment wisely. It's not enough to have a system that is good for today - it needs to cater for production needs for 10 or even 20 years into the future. When Hereford's Courtyard Centre for the Arts was recently granted funding to update its 15 year old system, a Yamaha CL3 system provided all the necessary facilities and future-proofing.

After 15 years of intense use, the audio system at the Courtyard was due for a refresh. With funding available, the venue's production manager Carl Hulme took the time to choose equipment that would take the venue far into the future, without the need for further significant investment.

"We run a diverse venue, with many art forms being presented on stage," he say

Belgium - The local council in the suburb of Brasschaat, north of Antwerp in Belgium, near the border with the Netherlands, has purchased a QSC Core 250i-based Q-Sys system with a TSC-3 touchscreen controller and QSC KLA line array loudspeakers as part of the audio system in the multi-purpose hall at the heart of its local cultural centre.

The hall and its raised stage is used for everything from public meetings to children's parties and concerts by local musicians. The staff that run the sound system in the hall are direct employees of the council and recommended the purchase of the Q-Sys system along with the KLA active line array system following a demo by the local QSC distributor, AED.

The sound system in the multipurpose hall is configured as a three-channel Left, Centre, Right (LCS) system. Two KLA12 elements are used per channel (for a total of six enclosures), and are

South Africa - St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls Kloof, KwaZula Natal, trickles with tradition and charm. This girls' school was established in 1906 and is well known for its musicals and drama pieces. "Originally St Mary's wanted lighting solutions for three venues, namely, the school hall, a studio which is used as the drama practice room and an outdoor auditorium," explained Nick Barnes from DWR who headed the installation. Michael Broderick, a lighting specialist, consulted to ensure the correct equipment was specified. Due to pricing and budget constraints, it was decided to commence the project with the school hall only.

DWR took out the outdated lighting infrastructure and replaced this with two stage lighting bars, one FOH Lighting Bar, four

Europe - Led by the legendary 'Barnsley Big Teaser', Biff Byford, hard rockers Saxon's wheels of steel have been rolling around the world on the band's Sacrifice tour since last March. Playing indoor shows and festivals in Europe, as well as for the growing trend in multi-band cruises, the tour lasts until December. A pair of DiGiCo mixing consoles is helping to rock many nations.

Jacky Lehmann runs Berlin-based audio production company Audiosound Lehmann and has worked with Saxon since 2004. Initially he engineered the band's live recordings and mixed the audio for two live DVDs, before becoming the regular Front of House engineer for the band's European shows last year. Denmark - DPA Microphones has restructured its management team in order to maximize resources and consolidate international sales activity around future new product launches.

The company's CEO Christian Poulsen says the development of new products scheduled for release in 2014 gave DPA the impetus to examine its internal structure and make changes that play to individual managers' personal strengths.

"These changes enable us to better support customers and dealers by providing a bridge between product development and sales," Poulsen says. "They also allow us to create a DPA community, through which we can connect directly with DPA end users and industry opinion formers. They, in turn, will be able to influence future product development and R&D decisions."

One of the key changes is the appointment of product specialist Mikkel Nymand to the newly created p

Australia - After three years, approximately two-million hours of labour and over 200m dollars, the newly refurbished Brisbane City Hall has reopened. The main auditorium has been revolutionised to meet the demands of the 21st century, yet remains stunningly true to the original building design.

The copper dome over the room is the largest in Australia, spanning 31m in diameter. The dome is supported on a brick base that allows the interior of the main auditorium to be unobscured by columns.

Located within this dome is a computer to monitor the loads on all of the chain hoists suspended from the roof structure. Unfortunately the people on the stage who were operating the chain hoists couldn't see the computer's screen and hence couldn't see what load was being applied to the structure. The structural engineers on the job had specified particular load ratings on the roof trusse

USA - The Audio Engineering Society Convention (Thursday, 17 October, through Sunday, 20 October 2013, at the Javits Center in New York City) was the most successful for some years, say the organisers. The exhibit floor, panels and technical sessions were packed all four days, and as AES celebrated its 65th Anniversary, a five-year-high number of 18,453 registrants was tallied.

At show close, AES reported a 16% increase in registration since the last time the convention was in New York two years ago (131st AES) and a s71% increase over last year's San Francisco event (133rd AES), which unfortunately was plagued by smaller attendance due to Hurricane Sandy.

"I can't express how thrilled I am with our convention this year," stated Bob Moses, executive director of the AES. "Our organizing committee really outdid themselves, with over 250 presentations from an astou

UK - Established in 1991 as an innovative state funded City Technology College, Brooke Weston Academy in Corby has a high reputation for academic achievement.

Built on land donated by local land-owner Hugh de Capell Brooke, and supported by Garry Weston, owner of Associated British Foods, in 2008 the school became an Academy. Although 22 years is relatively short in the life of a building, it is light years in the evolution of sound technology.

School principal, Trish Stringer, recently ordered that the sound system in their flagship 540-seat purpose-built Weston Theatre be upgraded to improve coverage.

AV & theatre technician Peter Jackson, who has been at the school since 1993, certainly had no objection, and became part of the tender process which resulted in Leicester-based Upstage Theatre Supplies being awarded the contract.

Sweden - Following the highly successful installation of an AFC3 acoustic enhancement system at the Stockholm Royal Opera rehearsal complex, further Yamaha digital audio technology has recently been specified for the venue itself. An MTX5-D digital matrix now helps to ensure that communication between lighting and video technicians is fast and crystal clear.

The installation is part of a major upgrade to the venue's lighting and video infrastructure, which has included a new control room and consoles. The Yamaha MTX5-D functions as a flexible 'front end' to a Riedel MediorNet system, which provides communications throughout the building. Installed by Norrkoping-based Mycon AV, the company's Åke 'Myggan' Wennersten explains why the MTX5-D was his preferred solution.

"To satisfy the requirements of the lighting and video team, a high quality, cost-effective matrix mixer wa

Slovakia - Back in 2008 several Slovak cities competed to become the European Capital of Culture for 2013, and took part in a competition. Eventually the city of Kosice (from the east of Slovakia) was awarded the title.

The company Rock Centrum, Martin Audio's territorial distributor, won the tender to supply the main sound system at the headquarters of the organisation, the Support Centre of Culture and Creativity (CPKK). Situated in the Kulturpark (a revitalisation of old military barracks), it has been built at the cost of €23.8m.

The mainstay of the complete public address consists of 20 x W8LM (in two hangs of 10 elements per side), with two W8LMD down-fills at the base of each hang. Providing LF extension are 10 x WS218X subwoofers.

In addition, 14 x Martin Audio Blackline F12+ and six F15+ have been used for floor monitors and sidefills respectively. The system is dr

USA - Founded in 1966, Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT) is an outdoor community theatre in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, USA. With its all-volunteer staff and actors, ASGT hosts three major productions each season in an outdoor garden setting. While most ASGT productions are musicals, the venue also hosts Shakespeare, improv and educational programmes.

The outdoor garden setting is pleasant for theatre goers, but it presents ongoing challenges to actors and staff ranging from lingering afternoon heat and inclement weather to noise from boat engines and horns at the nearby City Dock. Scott McCormick, one of two technical directors at ASGT, says the theatre's previous loudspeakers weren't weather-resistant and had to be bagged or removed from the theatre when it rained and after each performance. In addition, they had poor directional control which contributed to on-stage fe

Korea - Allen & Heath's Korean distributor, Sama ProSound Co., Ltd, recently installed a GLD-80 digital mixing system and ME-1 personal monitor mixer in Gunpo Sungjang Church in Gunpo-si near Seoul.

The church recently expanded, and decided to upgrade the sound system to digital from an old analogue system. Founded in 1984, the church contains a 1200 capacity main worship area with two floors and there is a sub-worship area and cafeteria.

Sama ProSound's brief was to install an easy to use and convenient digital mixer, so the company selected a GLD-80 digital mixer expanded with a AR2412 and two AR84 I/O racks, and with personal monitoring provided by five of the compatible ME-1 mixers, making Gunpo Sungjang Church the first church to install ME-1 in Korea.

"I first saw ME-1 at KOBA 2013, and it really impressed me. ME-1 meets all of my expectations as it is very easy t
