UK / USA - Martin Audio has announced a formidable support team to boost awareness of its expanding MLA (Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array) family.

Andy Davies has joined the UK manufacturer from rental company Concert Sound Clair, to fill the newly created role of application support (touring). This mirrors a similar position in the United States, where touring and rental company veteran Jim Jorgensen recently took up a similar position to support the growing network across the Atlantic.

Like Jorgensen, Andy Davies has widespread experience of Martin Audio systems and was aware of the long partnership that had existed between Martin Audio and Concert Sound when he started working with the Bedfordshire-based rental company around the turn of the millennium.

An alumnus of LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) Davies worked first as a freelance with Concert Sound befor

UK - Auralisation - designing the world with sound will be the theme of this year's Reproduced Sound conference and exhibition, it has been announced. The event, organised by the Institute of Acoustics, will be held at the Thistle Hotel, Brighton, on 14-16 November.

Now in its 28th year, it aims to represent the cutting edge of modern audio and acoustics in an informal environment that allows consultants, manufacturers, contractors and end users to mingle and share insights and information.

Conference chairman Paul Malpas said, "Reproduced Sound has firmly established itself as a 'must attend' event for many people from a wide background - and I am certain that this year's event will match the usual high standards.

"As well as providing delegates with invaluable updates on the latest developments across a wide range of specialist sectors, it has also become

UK - When the University of Salford opened its digital learning, teaching and research space at MediaCityUK in Salford Quays, it incorporated a flexible audio-visual system that can be customised and utilised in a number of creative ways to inform, educate and entertain students and visitors about the University's current and future projects.

The original technical design was prepared by The Centre for Virtual Environments at the University of Salford, and Electrosonic was awarded the contract to engineer and install the complete system, working directly for the University.

MediaCityUK, which is home to over 1,500 students, acts as a creative space designed to encourage creativity, innovation and collaboration between academics, students, professionals and the industry.

The new entrance area of the building is an elliptical space aptly called the Egg, and is described as &qu

UK - Dominated by its dramatic ceiling, featuring nearly 3,000 diamond-shaped pieces of LED-lit cut crystal, London West End membership nightclub Jalouse recently underwent a complete audio revamp as part of a general structural refurbishment, to prepare the award-winning luxury venue - owned by Moruf Yoozooph and Freddie Achom - for its next phase.

The three-year old club had never been entirely happy with its original sound system. Brought in with the task of upgrading the system and resiting the DJ console, Cosmic Electronics opted for an RCF dancefloor solution, redeploying the existing system to peripheral bar and lounge infill duties. At the same time they carried out some digital rewiring, and placed the crystal ceiling under computerised lighting control.

"We have worked a lot with RCF over the years and it was only when we became involved in another club project

UK - Florence and the Machine's current European dates to promote her Ceremonials album were recently upsized for a three-night run at London's Alexandra Palace, with the band joined by a 12-piece choir and 12-piece string section. A new Midas PRO2 live audio system supplemented monitor world for these gigs, joining the stalwart XL8 at FOH. Both consoles were provided by Britannia Row Productions.

Engineer Mike Gibbard was using the PRO2 to provide monitor mixes for the choir and string section, and to send stem feeds to the band's monitor and FOH desks.

"The PRO2's a natural choice for this really," says Gibbard. "I take a band mix from the monitor desk, a dry vocal mix of Florence and a click, which I then send to the choir and string section. I have nine hardwired mixes for the choir, and I've broken up the string section into cello mix, violin mix and

UK - The award winning Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) has just confirmed the purchase of a Roland M-480 Live Mixing Console and R-1000 48 Track Recorder as well as two S-1608 Digital Snakes for use on their year round tour dates across Scotland. Under the artistic direction of saxophonist Tommy Smith, the SNJO and its youth orchestra along with visiting artists and soloists produce and present a continuous schedule of live performances which are recorded and then released for sale.

Chief engineer for the SNJO, Mark McKellen, wanted to find a flexible system with a small footprint to replace the heavy desks and cables that they had to constantly move. Glasgow based hire company Sono Vie supplied the M-480, R-1000 and S-1608s on approval during October last year - and they were put to the test at the Music Hall in Aberdeen, the Queens Hall in Edinburgh and the Royal Scott

Brazil - DiGiCo's SD10 has just made its first venture into Brazil, with one being purchased by events company Maxi Audio Luz Imagen, based in Sao Paulo. Used on a variety of events, the company is very happy with its purchase.

Maxi Audio technical manager Sandro Monteiro had been impressed by the DiGiCo consoles on show at InfoComm 2009 and, with sound engineers at Brazilian events asking for DiGiCo consoles, he began to investigate what would be the best option for the company.

"As a sound rental company, we need to offer the best products to our clients," he says. "The DiGiCo SD10 has fantastic sound which has the same 'colour' as that of an analogue console. The digital processing has great clarity, the preamplifiers are high quality, the workflow is straightforward and the MADI system is really useful. On top of all that, the console has a great price."

Germany - For two weekends running recently, Garmisch-Partenkirchen was home to the elite of the alpine skiing world: on 28-29 January for the men's downhill and super G, and 4-5 February for the women's speed disciplines. Once again, the small resort in Upper Bavaria found itself cast in the role of capital of the skiing world, and as in previous years, TV and radio stations the world over were providing coverage of the competitions unfolding on the dreaded Kandahar run.

Another constant was the participation of Weilheim-based production company TC Showtechnik. This was the eighth time the company led by CEOs Martin Schulze and Stefan Rehthaler had been charged with responsibility for the sound reinforcement, both piste-side and in front of the show stage in the Kurpark.

"This year, the variations of the weather were almost beyond belief," reports Schulze. "Whe

USA - The Groove Cruise, the world's largest fully charted dance music cruise experience, is geared toward those who love dance music. Involving 2,200 people, 40-plus artists, two islands, plus a massive cruise ship - with everything taking place over a period of 72 hours, the Groove Cruise is one of numerous vacation packages offered by Miami Beach, FL-based Whet Travel.

With crowds like these, the sound reinforcement systems need to pack plenty of punch. That's why on a recent trip between Miami and the Bahamas, several systems drawn from the catalogue of D.A.S. Audio were out in full force.

Miami-based Master Sound Productions, a full service production company providing stage, sound, and lighting plus turnkey logistic management services, handles the technical aspects for Whet Travel's Groove Cruise. Frank Gonzalez, Master Sound's sales and production manager, discussed hi

UK - Just Sound in the UK has supplied a PA rig based around an iLive digital mixing system to the Royal Military School of Music, which will operate and loan the equipment to the British Army's bands performing around the globe. The system was designed to be compact for air portability on a variety of military aircraft, with minimum set-up time.

The rig will be used in dangerous hot spots, such as Helmand province in Afghanistan where Army bands will play to military audiences in operating bases all over the area. The system can provide sound reinforcement for up to 600 spectators and is capable of supporting a full popular music band, including drums, bass, two guitars, keys, a horn section, vocals and backing vocals.

"iLive was chosen because it has a high channel count and large amounts of processing in an extremely compact footprint, which is lightweight and easy to

Finland - In Turku, Finland, the flexible Logomo Hall assumes whatever size or shape is suited for the event of the evening. On one night it can provide a compact 1,100-seat space with a nearly square audience area, ideal for a chamber orchestra or jazz ensemble. Within a few hours, it can be transformed into an elongated rectangle accommodating 3,500 for a rock concert.

And with the push of a button, its permanently installed Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system instantly optimizes acoustical response for both the current room configuration and the event at hand, whether a concert, conference, play, or opera.

"Constellation's effect is extremely realistic," observes Janne Auvinen, events and venue director for Logomo. "People don't actually notice the system because it is just so natural."

Germany - Innovason has reported a highly successful PL+S show 2012. The focus this year was the revelation of the latest box of tricks that has been integrated into Innovason's flagship Eclipse GT digital console: named for the 'all-gifted' figure of Greek mythology, Pandora is a new way of panning that provides audibly better results across the listening field than traditional stereo panning, says the company.

Tonmeister and renowned classical sound engineer, Carsten Kummel, explains, "The problem with traditional panning is the loss of signal on one side when you pan to the other. To resolve this, some people choose to mix in mono, but this isn't really a viable solution, especially for complex shows where you are dealing with anything from 80 to 100 channels. So, I started playing around with delay and seeing if I could achieve better results that way.

"I went aw

UAE - The 10th Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival moved to a spacious new site this year. From February 16-24, 2012 at Dubai Festival City, a robust Meyer Sound Milo-based line array loudspeaker system covered the site with exemplary sound - even after being pummeled by a ferocious sandstorm. Total attendance topped 46,000 for the nine evenings of performances.

"On the second day of the festival we had one of the worst sandstorms in recent years," recalls Karl Da Costa, technical manager of Dubai-based Artes Middle East LLC, which has equipped the festival with Meyer Sound systems for the past five years. "A couple of video screens came down, and dust was getting into everything. Yet we managed to get through the afternoon sound check. Fortunately, the winds died down by evening, and all the loudspeakers performed flawlessly for the show."

Ukraine - Launched in 1997, STB is one of Ukraine's most popular television stations. Broadcasting a mixture of original content and Ukrainian versions of popular Western programmes, the station continues to expand. Recently it invested in a DiGiCo SD9.

Currently ranked first in the country by audience share, STB needed a digital console that would withstand the rigours of moving around the country to regional heats of the Ukrainian version of Masterchef.

"The console had to be a reliable workhorse, able to work while constantly travelling - sometimes in hostile environments. As far as we were concerned, DiGiCo has the best protection against dust and shock resistance. There was also an urgent need for a MADI interface and we wanted the possibility of using fibre optic," says STB sound engineer for projects such as The X Factor and Ukraine's Got Tale

UK - JoeCo and UK distributor MSL Professional head to PLASA Focus for the first time showing the latest additions to the BlackBox range of 1U multi-channel recorders and players, including the new BBR64-Dante Recorder which was unveiled at the recent Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt.

The BBR64-Dante is the result of JoeCo's collaboration with Audinate, creators of the award-winning Dante digital media networking solution. The original BBR-Dante system was released in 2011 and was able to record up to 32 channels of audio from a Dante network. The new BBR64-Dante now doubles that track count to 64, while still occupying just one rack unit of space. The recorder connects to any Dante-enabled network device from a range of console and converter manufacturers. In addition to recording 64 channels at standard sample rates, it can also record eight channels of analogue alongside 56 chan

UK - Carving out an impressive reputation through the contribution of its graduates inter alia to the games and visual effects industries, Bournemouth University on the UK's south coast expanded its Talbot Campus last year to include new lecture and seminar facilities. Kimmeridge House, as the new building is known, accommodates 300 and 70 seater lecture halls as well as a number of seminar rooms belonging to the university's excellent Media and Design School.

To meet the challenging requirement profile and acoustics above all of the main lecture hall, specialists from GV Multimedia were called in to design and install the audio and video systems, with the company's Exeter branch performing the installation. It was a tricky task, of the kind that end either in plaudits or brickbats, with the interior architecture of the hall posing the first problem. "The main lecture hall

France - Approaching 100 years of hosting football matches, Le Stade de la Route de Lorient in Rennes made the decision to install a robust complement of 64 Meyer Sound loudspeakers -making it the first major stadium in France to boast a complete Meyer Sound self-powered audio reinforcement system.

With seating for more than 31,000, the stadium is the home of the top tier league Stade Rennais Football Club. The structure has undergone several renovations since it was inaugurated in 1912, with the last major reconstruction in 2004. Unfortunately, the sound system installed at that time proved difficult to maintain and inadequate for the demands of today's high-energy incidental music and video soundtracks.

Spectaculaires, a diversified event technology company based near Rennes, was called in to consult on a system that would improve coverage and reliability, supply power and b

USA - Located in Merrimack, New Hampshire, Prosound Worx is a sound company specialising in live theatre. Owner Rich Loomer found an insightful solution to the uncertainties of traditional wireless with XD-V digital wireless systems by Line 6.

"I had the opportunity to try Line 6 digital wireless last year and never looked back," says Loomer. "I have a rack of 14 bodypack systems - eight V70s and six of the new V75 model - and they've been outstanding. In fact, we just won Best Community Sound Design at the New Hampshire Theatre Awards, for a show called The Dinosaur Musical that we staged with the Peacock Players at the Court Street Theatre in Nashua last fall. Line 6 was a big part of our success."

Having worked southern New Hampshire's active theatrescene for about six years, Loomer is well acquainted with the critical nature of wireless on stage.
