USA - Two-time Grammy winner Maxwell makes his much anticipated return to the stage this month, sharing the bill with Soul/R&B singer-songwriter Jill Scott. The spring-into-summer co-bill tour - which comes on the heels of the successful BLACKsummer'snight, Maxwell's first recording in eight years - will make whistle stops in major US arena markets through the end of June.

Both Maxwell and Scott's monitor needs are in the hands of a DiGiCo SD7, provisioned by Clair Global. For Maxwell's Clay Hutson - who has employed DiGiCo consoles extensively on tours with artists such as Garbage, Marilyn Manson, Pink, Prince and Velvet Revolver - this was his first opportunity to lay hands on SD7. For Jim Roach, who has worked with Scott for 3+ years, as well as Brian McKnight Joe Cocker, Keisha Cole and Boney James, his previous experience on DiGiCo consoles was limited to one-off, fl

UK - When Raymond Gubbay staged his opera in-the-round Carmen spectacular in London's O2 Arena for the first time this summer, TiMax was called upon to help stitch together the audio as it has done successfully for the past 10 years of Gubbay's Royal Albert Hall productions. For a performance on such a large scale it was considered especially vital for the audience to localise to the individual performers if the English-translated libretto was to come across clearly.

Sound design was as usual the responsibility of Bobby Aitken, who consulted with Robin Whittaker of TiMax developers Out Board on how to appropriately scale up their Royal Albert Hall distributed source-oriented reinforcement concept. Chris Ekers handled system engineering and management with Autograph's Jim Douglas looking after supply and installation. Front of house engineer was Paul Stannering.

USA - Ten-piece Texas soul band, Memphis Train Revue, has employed a new touring sound system designed around Allen & Heath's iDR-32 MixRack, connected to a laptop in place of a mixing surface.

"Eliminating the mixing console frees up a significant amount of floor space, and that can be the difference in getting the gig, whether it's a club, theatre or ballroom," says James Duvall of Creative Engineering & Solutions in Austin, Texas, who manages the house and monitor mixes for the band. "It saved us a lot of money, too."

The iDR-32 MixRack provides all the inputs, outputs, processing and routing for the band.

"I love the fact that the iDR-32 gives me all those features in a rack-mount box that I can hide under the stage. I don't carry any outboard gear at all, and there's no sacrifice in functionality. When I was designing the system, I figured, why

UK - eMerging, the UK distributors for Digital Audio Denmark's high-end A-D and D-As, has sold four DAD AX24 converters to EMI's Abbey Road Studios, for use in the Abbey Road Mobile. All four are equipped with plug-in MADI options, and two include DAD's new direct Pro Tools HD interface card.

Abbey Road Studios engineer Jonathan Allen, who undertook test recordings with the AX24 before Abbey Road purchased the units, comments, "For the last few years, the Abbey Road Mobile Recording unit has been looking to create affordable recording and editing packages without compromising on quality. Key to this was our search for a unit which had world-class digital converters, great built-in mic amps and the ability to run MADI back to the control room. The DAD AX24 not only ticked these boxes but made one of the best arguments for working at higher sampling frequencies."

UK - The Friendly Fires' FOH engineer Richard 'Bars' Barling was one of the first users to put the new Soundcraft Vi1 digital consoles through its paces at a private corporate event at a noted London jazz venue in April.

"As we already use the Vi6 on our tours, it was really easy for me to use the Vi1 and its Widescreen Vistonics interface right away," Bars said. "The integrated I/O on the desk meant we could quickly swap it out for the existing house console, and I could just download my usual show file from the Vi6 on my USB key, with minimal adjustments."

Bars used 24 inputs plus four FX for the gig, and the Vi1 easily met all his demands. "I had to just tell everybody that the Vi6 has had a baby." reported Bars to Andy Brown, head of digital console strategy at Soundcraft Studer, who worked with Bars on the night.

The Vi1 has many of the fun
