France - Studio 106, one of the principal live studios at Radio France, has recently been equipped with an Eclipse digital mixing console from Innovason. This is now their seventh console from the French manufacturer. Nevertheless, it was far from being a foregone conclusion - the Radio France technical team tried out four different consoles from four major manufacturers before settling on the Eclipse as the optimum choice.

"Studio 106 is one of our most important live studios that plays host to all kinds of live musical broadcasts from rock and roll to classical concerts and everything in between," explained studio chief Pascal Coulloux.

"A regular fixture at Studio 106 is the daily radio program on France Inter, Le Fou du Roi with French radio and TV personality Stéphane Bern, which takes a light-hearted look at current affairs, entertainment and

Although a wholly owned commercial subsidiary of the broadcaster, the company is required to tender competitively for BBC work alongside independent service providers. To meet customer demand there has been a gradual standardisation of its audio post production equipment onto the Pro Tools platform.

"Pro Tools is the industry standard, and it¹s essential that we can move projects easily between our own engineers and theatres, and work on sessions that may have been started externally," explains sound team leader Edurne Bengoa. "We have three dubbing theatres and two track laying rooms at Television Centre, two dubbing theatres at White City, and two dubbing theatres dedicated to Eastenders at Elstr

UK - Monitor engineer Nahuel Gutierrez has been using a Midas PRO6 live audio system for the Noisettes' UK tour. Having previously spent 15 months with its big brother the XL8 on the final Oasis world tour, Gutierrez found the transition to the PRO6 an easy one.

"I was able to mix on the PRO6 in the same way I did on the XL8, and after a short time learning where the controls on this surface were, I was flying again," he says. "Although it's a smaller surface, the PRO6 isn't missing any of the XL8's features. The sound quality equally as superb, and my favourite features were there, such as six full parametric equalisers on the output channels, which have allowed me to forget about graphic eq's for the last two years.

"Having fewer faders was never an issue working with the POP Groups, which once again were my main way of mixing. And I set up one group of f

Italy - To mix the sound on Italian singer/songwriter Gianluca Grignani's latest tour, rental firm Idea Musica Service of Latina in central Italy fielded a DiGiCo system conceived by AudioProgetti, a company with its HQ in Cavenago Brianza (Milan) specialising in the design, supply and installation of pro audio systems.

AudioProgetti's technical manager Gabel Guagliumi explains how the system came about, "Idea Musica's brief was to put together a complete touring control system with 56 input channels and 24 outputs, a single core for audio input/conversion (avoiding the additional cost and space required for splitters) and digital signal transport.

"We opted for a DiGiCo SD8 and DiGiRack setup because it enables us to have control of 60 input channels in the three sections of the console worksurface, the same excellent preamps as the DiGiCo SD7 and D5, a modular stag

"We bought our first console in July this year and were really impressed with its great sound and its price point," says Red Power owner Andrés Cuadros. "We have other digital consoles in our inventory, but the SD8 has a lot of advantages - its sound quality, versatility and ease of operation make it a favourite console with all the engineers who have used it here."

Deployed on a variety of events - from shows by Faith No More and Kansas to Placido Domingo, Il Divo and Sarah Brightman, not to mention some of Peru's highest profile festivals - the SD8 quickly establis

Oasis Stage Werks discovered Tempest2400's benefits while assisting one of its customers on a concert series at the University of Utah's Red Butte Garden and Arboretum. Due to environmental considerations, the customer was not permitted to run wires through much of the venue, necessitating a wireless intercom system capable of performing well when located some distance from the base station. According to Oasis Stage Werks production manager John Lopez, Tempest2400 was more than up to the task.

"We were 1,500ft away [from the Red Butte Garden and Arbor

UK - Sound designer of the London stage production of Rat Pack, Chris Whybrow, fresh from his success with Thriller, describes how he's brought more than a touch of Vegas to London's Adelphi.

"The entire band is on different height risers so the audience hears different instruments directly, depending where they are sitting in the auditorium. The dress circle audience for example, are right in front of the trumpets. Getting the music right is a big part of Rat Pack; it has to be slick, so balancing the band is very important.

"The Adelphi is a typical West End theatre, vertically there are three audience positions and I have placed a left/right d&b audiotechnik Q1 loudspeaker array hung at each level: stalls, dress circle and gallery. There are also Q subwoofers in the stalls, and flown Q subwoofers up at the gallery level. I'm not doing much in

The Netherlands - The Frisian Street Festival in the Dutch town of Leeuwarden is one of the major attractions in the Netherlands' events calendar. For one weekend a year, the streets and squares of the town are converted into a single giant stage - for acrobats, musicians and actors. On the two main stages, Oldehoofsterkerkhof and Gouverneursplein, a large number of bands this year provided a programme rich in variety.

In order to do justice to each of the different genres, which ranged from reggae to funk to hard rock, technicians from the local rental company, GV Audio, assigned a Dynacord Cobra system to each of the two stages. For the Oldehoofsterkerkhof, they opted for a flown Cobra-2 system comprising 121 Cobra Tops and Cobra Subs. The power was supplied by four Dynacord H5000 power amplifiers. For the Gouverneursplein, they used a stacked Cobra-4 system comprising

USA - The Colombian Independence Day Festival 2009, one of the oldest and best-established festivals in New York City, had its 25th anniversary outing this past July at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. Sponsored by the Colombian Civic Centre (CCC), the annual gathering is geared to promote Colombian culture, values, and traditions, as well as uniting Colombian people throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.

For one day, the area was transformed into Colombian kiosks with vendors selling their wares while live music provided entertainment with the invigorating sounds of Cumbia, Vallenato, Salsa, and other Colombian musical rhythms. To help ensure a festive mood, the CCC wanted a potent sound system. They got their wish - with a sizeable setup based on components from the D.A.S. Audio catalogue.

USA - Audient's ASP8024 high resolution mixing console has been installed at Angry Chair Music, a project studio catering to local talent in Turners Falls, MA. The success of Staind, Shadows Fall, Kill Switch Engage and All That Remains, who originate from the same district, is fuelling and inspiring the music scene in the area, bringing in more recording bands to the recently upgraded studio.

Studio owner Paul Interlande thoroughly researched his options before the purchase. "I am definitely 'old school', so I wanted an analogue desk with great features and a great sound," he explains. "The ASP8024 fell neatly into all these categories, as well as coming well within budget.

"The desk is a joy. It seems with every new project I discover another useful feature to conquer problematic scenarios," he continues. "Having 14 auxes enables me to hardwire

UK - A prominent London lecture theatre - which is also heavily used for film and television productions - has taken delivery of a new dnp Beta 100 advanced double element screen and a Paradigm rear projection rig - courtesy of integrators, Audio Visual Machines.

However, according to AV Services Manager, Mike Allinson, its last serious AV upgrade was undertaken 15 years ago. The original chalkboard was moved forward to accommodate a rear projection area and along the way CRT and then LCD projectors were brought in, firing directly onto the screen.
