USA - At AES in New York, Audio-Technica featured its first-ever ribbon microphones, the AT4080 and AT4081 Bidirectional Active Ribbon Microphones, two new offerings from A-T's expanding 40 Series.

Audio-Technica's R&D team in Japan engineered and manufactured the AT4080 and AT4081 from the ground up, utilizing a hand-built, proprietary design and rugged, durable construction.

The AT4080, whose footprint is that of a classic 'suspension cradled' side-address condenser, is recommended for vocals, horns, strings, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, orchestras, ensembles and guitar cabinets.

The AT4081, with an appearance more like that of a pencil condenser, is optimized for strings, saxophones and other horns, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, orchestras, ensembles and guitar cabinets; its low-profile stick design maximizes placement options. Both mics excel in recordin

World Cup Concert - A major concert has been announced to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The three-hour show will feature collaborations between international stars and top African artists and appearances by football legends. The event, from the team behind Live 8, takes place on 10 June at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

The show is being staged by Kevin Wall, who told BBC News he has been "overwhelmed" by major artists wanting to get involved. "That's unusual, normally it's the other way round," he added. He admitted he will have to turn down some big name acts: "We are going to have a lot of the major African artists and really it's going to be about Africa so the slots for international artists are a rarity."

Wall believes the show could reach an even bigger TV audience than Live 8 and Li

Italy - Located within a deconsecrated 18th Century Florence church, the idea behind the €3m Cavalli Club has been described its by owner, Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, as "to let others into my world".

Featuring a bar/restaurant and live entertainment, the club measures around 22m long by seven wide. As the building is listed and nothing was allowed to touch the walls of the old church, architect Italo Rota built the club within a freestanding iron structure. The main bar and circulation area is downstairs, with a smaller first floor dining area above part of the main space.

The audio system was designed by Pierluigi Pecchenini of Direct Field Engineering. He needed a system that was compact enough not to visually intrude on either the historic fabric of the building or the club's plush décor. To achieve this, Alcons VR8, TS7 and LR14 loudspeaker

Germany - Fohhn Audio has announced the release of its new Linea Focus series. Designed for both mobile and fixed installation use, the electronically steerable, active line array systems feature an innovative design in which the vertical sound dispersion characteristics of the speaker can be directed towards a specific area of the audience and remotely controlled in real time, without any need to mechanically alter the speaker's position.

The Linea Focus systems incorporate either eight (LF-120/LFi-120) or 16 (LF-220/LFi-220) high-performance 4-inch speakers, each equipped with a separate, integral Class D DSP amplifier that produces 100 watts of direct path power. The systems can be remotely controlled and monitored from a central location using a PC/laptop. Up to 255 separate speakers can be connected and steered using the manufacturer's sophisticated networking technology.

USA - Launched in June, 2009, the Electro-Voice EVA (line array) and EVF (front-load) loudspeakers from the new EV-Innovation family of installation-dedicated loudspeakers are providing the sound solution for Snoqualmie Valley Alliance Church in Fall City, WA.

This system upgrade was specified by Jeff Sanderson and Todd Gathany of Onpoint Designs and installed by Morgan Sound. The system also features EV's latest XCS312 cardioid pattern subwoofers.

"Our EV rep Kevin Johnson (Left Coast Marketing) introduced us to the EV-Innovation family at the InfoComm trade show," says Gathany, "and we came away really impressed with their sonic characteristics - very smooth and warm-sounding. Add that to their clean aesthetics and attractive price point, we knew they would be solid choices for house of worship installations like Snoqualmie."

UK - Newcastle-based Nitelites has been supporting the BUPA Great North Run - the world's biggest half-marathon - for around a decade.

Staged between Newcastle and South Shields, this year was no exception. And although the event has regularly attracted over 50,000 runners, the production requirement has changed over the years, and the infrastructure grown accordingly.

"We started out in the early days supplying a 100V line public address communication system - but over the years it has evolved into a full fun-run event, and recently we have supplied a JBL VerTec line array," says Nitelites director, Jamie Moore.

The infrastructure they supply includes full platforms, staging, mobile rigs and ground support for the start and finishing lines, with an interim point at 10km.

The specification for the 2009 event was again for VerTec, and with the runners lining up ov

USA - The Brickhouse front-loading arbor from Thern Stage Equipment delivers a level of convenience and security unavailable from conventional arbors, says the company, providing stagehands with an attractive solution that solves many of the problems of traditional counterweight rigging.

Using a new front-loading design, the Brickhouse from TSE makes operation ergonomic and convenient for users. Traditional counterweight arbors are difficult to load due to their side-loading design; operators are required to stretch and twist to load weights from the bottom up. With TSE's Front-Loading arbor, a series of weight shelves eliminates the need for bottom loading and allows counterweight bricks to be front-loaded at the most convenient position. Operators are no longer required to stretch and bend repeatedly to load weight bricks from the side. TSE counterweight bricks also feature bu

USA - BSS Audio has added a cost-effective break-out box to its Soundweb London family of digital signal processors. The new BLU-BOB output expander, shown at AES New York, compliments the seven other members of the Soundweb London family and represents an inexpensive solution to increasing the number of outputs in a Harman HiQnet networked system, says the company.

The BLU-BOB features eight analogue audio outputs on standard terminal block connectors and the 256-channel, low latency, fault tolerant digital audio bus, also found on the BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 devices. In addition to providing a backbone for the transportation of multiple channels, this bus also facilitates the creation of large, fault-tolerant, centralized matrices containing multiple devices.

The digital audio bus uses standard, inexpensive Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, which enables a distance of 10

UK - On a world tour to promote their new album Humbug, which runs through to February next year, the Arctic Monkeys are carrying a range of Sennheiser microphones to give them their signature sound.

Having previously worked as front of house engineer with acts including the White Stripes, Mark Ronson, Keane, and The Flaming Lips, Matthew Kettle has adopted the approach that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', and has continued with the previous FOH preference for Sennheiser microphones scattered liberally throughout the stage.

The drum kit features a mixture of e901 and e902 dynamic cardioid mics, one of each on the kick drum and 904s on the rack and floor toms.

"I've loved both of these mics since they came out, both have a very sturdy design and sound great," says Kettle. "I'm a particular fan of the 902. It's got a fantastic deep, low end thump to it

USA - Crown announced at AES New York the latest update to its Macro-Tech i series of amplifiers, featuring increased power and new dual port capability. Comprised of three models, the MA-5000i, MA-9000i, and MA-12000i, the Macro-Tech i series features Class-I circuitry, which delivers greater power while reducing the amplifier's weight by more than half.

The new Macro-Tech i series also features dual-port capability. An additional network port now allows a user to daisy chain the network control down the rack of amplifiers instead of having to run a separate cable from a switch to each individual amplifier.

"The professional sound reinforcement community knows what to expect from the Macro-Tech i series. They are getting the best sounding, most reliable analogue power amplifier in the world. The best just got better with these updates. The upgraded power and features re

A team of eight led by James Mitchelmore (days) and Kris Love (nights) installed some 16,000m of festoon, 40 generators of varying sizes and several hundred other assorted items of lighting and power distribution.

"The site is not without its challenges but good weather made all the difference and the installation was completed in record time, with the Tower daily festoon-hanging record broken," notes Mitchelmore. "It was a good conclusion to a busy summer season including Rock Ness, the Wickerman Festival, the World Mountain Bike champs, the Scottish game fair, the Tartan Heart Festiva, Edinburgh Festival and many other smaller projects."

Russia - Pop diva Anastacia's four month tour of the UK and Europe's theatres and arenas finished in style in the middle of September - with what was commonly considered its best sounding date - in Kiev, Russia. DiGiCo D5s sat at both Front of House and monitor positions throughout, in the safe hands of Tony Blanc and Becky Pell.

Blanc is no stranger to working with Anastacia, having performed FOH duties for her on and off since her first single broke some eight years ago. He is also no stranger to DiGiCo and was happy to be able to specify a D5 for her latest tour.

As the tour didn't carry a full PA system, Blanc utilised 56 of the D5's inputs and fed the varying systems with five sends: main PA, front-fills, subs and delays as required.

"The show was her usual pop style, where the songs vary in colour and intensity," he recalls. "Most programmers work at hom
