USA - Technomad Associates has added brown to its library of custom colours for its range of weatherproof loudspeakers. The company now offers a total of 14 UV-stabilized colours that do not fade in sunlight outdoors, and remain protected from indoor contact due to the loudspeakers' rugged, durable structures, says the company.

The brown colour was added to the library by request from Technomad contractors and end users looking for loudspeaker colours to blend in with wood and earthen environments. The rich brown colour is intended for zoos, hotels, public walks and other tourist attractions for background music, entertainment and public safety applications.

Switzerland - The sixth Annual Shure/Montreux Jazz Voice Competition concluded on 9 July with German singer Sabine Kuehlich receiving first prize. The second and third place winners were Americans Liela Avila and Amy Crawford.

Jazz vocalist Patti Austin headed the competition jury, which judged the quality of the singers' vocals, the originality of the interpretations of their songs, their improvisational skills, and their stage presence. Kuehlich scored highly in all areas and impressed the audience with her dynamic performance of Chick Corea's,You're Everything and two of her own original compositions.

The three finalists were chosen from a group of 13 semi-finalists. Each singer was accompanied for their performance by Swiss musicians Jean-Pierre Schaller (bass), Cyril Regamey (drums), and Peter Wagner (piano).

UK - Kano is making sure he's being heard loud and clear by using a Sennheiser SKM 935 for his live dates throughout the summer, promoting his forthcoming album, 140 Grime Street.

Fabrice Quirin has been his monitor engineer since last summer and it was his persuading that led to Kano picking up the Sennheiser mic. "I'd used the SKM 935 on a few occasions when I was working for Britannia Row Productions," explains Quirin. "I always had great results with them, especially in monitors.

"I think the 935 works a treat on Kano's vocal," he continues. "He is a bright, loud MC and the high end of the 935 is very soft giving him a smoother sound from the start. The low end is fantastic on these mics. I find it very flattering. Also they can take the volume when set to -30 sensitivity, even though the meter is showing clipping all the way through.&q

USA - From New York City to Indonesia, the Charlie Hall Band has been on a world tour that's brought them to a variety of venues including large outdoor festival stages, high school and college auditoriums, and a number of churches. While there are five members of this Christian rock group visible onstage, Aviom's Personal Monitor Mixing System has become a vital part of the band.

The monitoring system has been a part of the setup since 2005. According to Dustin Ragland, drummer for Charlie Hall, the system's efficient and portable design has made traveling and having to deal with the PA gear less challenging. "Its compactness has been a major plus," he says. "We previously traveled with a digital mixer and a large splitter, and I was in charge of each mix. USA - As in the past, music fans jammed Chicago's Grant Park for this year's Lollapalooza, drawing sell-out crowds 1-3 August. Seen and heard onstage throughout the event, Shure microphones played a big role at the festival.

Choosing Lollapalooza 2008 to play its first North American gig on the second leg of its summer tour, Radiohead played to a sell-out crowd of 75,000 to close out the first night. Thom Yorke's vocals and guitar helped guide the two-hour set, with the frontman singing into a Beta 87C from Shure.

Germany - Last year, the German rental company Veranstaltungstechnik Linke e.K. from Leipzig utilised an Aviom Pro64 digital multicore system in its Classic Open event as a replacement for their analogue multicore system. This year, Aviom will make a repeat performance.

The annual ten-day event, presenting classical and popular artists in the historic city of Leipzig's Market Square, puts heavy demands on both the equipment and the staff. Technical director Peter Linke is managing the event for the fourteenth time this year.

Awards News - Rock band Iron Maiden have asked to be removed from the Vodafone Live Music Awards shortlist after being nominated for the best live return prize. Vodafone said the band had complained they should not be considered for the prize because they said they had never stopped touring. In a posting on their website the band said: "We are not quite sure where we are returning from." Indie group James have now been nominated for the award instead.
