UK - Audio compression specialist APT has launched a new website that is designed to provide useful information to customers, potential customers and all those interested in audio coding and codecs. The site, which can be accessed at the same URL (www.aptx.com), is now much easier for customers to navigate, says the company. Its new look provides a distinct identity for each of APT's two business areas - Broadcast Products and the licensing of Intellectual Property.

The Electroacoustics Group of the Institute of Acoustics in collaboration with ABTT, APRS & ISCE is staging Reproduced Sound 23 at The Sage, Gateshead, 29-30 November, and has issued a 'Call for papers'.

"This Reproduced Sound conference will be hosted at one of the UK's newest and largest venues for staging concerts and other live events," says an IOA spokesman. "We will have an auditorium to use for the presentations and for any demonstrations associated with these, so there is an exciting opportunity to devote a large part of the conference to subjects relating to audio in the production of live events. These might include: sound reinforcement, room acoustics, recording (audio and video), broadcast, loudspeakers and microphones, intelligibility, innovations."

Kenneth Van Druten, Linkin Park's FOH engineer, specified Adamson for the upcoming Linkin Park dates after meeting with Jesse Adamson at a ZZ Top gig using the Adamson Yaxis rig in Corpus Christi, Texas, who were playing on an Adamson's Yaxis rig.

Van Druten's requirements for the show were specific: even coverage and excellent intelligibility throughout the venue to do Linkin Park's new material proper justice. Jochen Sommer, Adamson's newest addition to its European support personnel assisted with the final system design

France - Fleetwood Mobiles was backstage in Paris recently to capture Avril Lavigne in concert for an MTV Special, which was broadcast during April at various different time slots. Fleetwood director Tim Summerhayes travelled to the city with only a D-Rig for company. The concert audio was captured at the side of the stage using API mic amps and Radar.

"The concert took place in an old music hall near Sacre Coeur, in front of an invited audience," Summerhayes explains. "Access to the venue was very restricted, so I had to use a D-Rig instead of a mobile recording truck. However, Avril's road crew were incredibly helpful and made sure I had everything I needed. Her performance was electric and that atmosphere really came across on the soundtrack."

UK - The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) recently staged a new adaptation of The Who's 1973 double album Quadrophenia, which inspired the 1978 film of the same name.

Staged at Cardiff's Sherman Theatre, the entire performing and technical crew of the production were students of RWCMD, which was also the first independent theatrical production of Quadrophenia to receive the endorsement and creative input of The Who's Pete Townshend.

A Yamaha M7CL-48 console was chosen to mix the show, with second year student Seeta Mistry as the show's FOH engineer. She was tutored on the console by RWCMD 'old boy' Nigel Thomas, with some help from Yamaha's Karl Christmas.

South Korea - A-Works Korea is the name of the new distribution company recently set up to represent French digital console manufacturer, InnovaSON, in South Korea. Based in Sungnam City, A-Works will also be distributing Camco amplifiers and Nexo loudspeakers.

Germany - Clear-Com has been chosen by TVN Group, one of Germany's leading TV, film and outside broadcast production companies, to equip its new state-of-the-art TVN UE3HD OB truck with matrix intercom systems to expand their communication network.

The new OB truck has been fitted with a Clear-Com Eclipse Matrix with 32 digital and 96 analogue ports, and the new Eclipse PiCo digital matrix. In addition to this, Clear-Com has developed a customised LCD desktop panel to meet TVN's exact installation requirements.

"We have worked with Clear-Com for a long time," said Frank Beekmann, chief production engineer at TVN, "and we've had very good experience with this highly flexible communications system."

Zap Audio, the Geneva-based equipment importer and system designer, has already created an impact in the city with the installation of a Geo S tangent-array system in the celebrated Victoria Hall, a landmark classical music venue well-known in international touring circles.

Encouraged by the success of the Victoria Hall, the Zap team was next consulted by the Casino Theatre, a smaller venue also of historic importance to which they often supplied rental systems. The theatre's technical team chose to design and install the system itself, using Nexo's GEOSoft package.

USA - Symetrix is showing version 1.1 of the Integrator Series Zone Mix 760 paging and music management system at the InfoComm 2007 exhibition.

Version 1.1 introduces a number of feature enhancements to the 760, a zone mixer that has been designed to provide the optimal feature set and I/O count needed for restaurants, hotels, sports bars and nightclubs.

The number of presets now available has been increased from 10 to fifty, and some minor issues have additionally been fixed.

UK - The three days of the Give It A Name indoor shows are seen as the start of the UK festival season - as the best up-and-coming new alt-rock bands flip-flop through three venues in England and Scotland. With up to 12 acts a day going through each stage, this was an opportunity for an army of different front-of-house engineers to get their hands on a big Nexo Geo T line array, running the newly-launched NXStream management software.

USA - Aviom has announced several additions to its global sales team.

Jonathan 'JP' Parker, who has been serving as Aviom's sales director in the Southeastern US, is now assuming the role of director of international sales, Asia Pacific.

Mark Meding, who has been Aviom's sales director for the Northeast US and Canada, will now assume Parker's former Southeastern territory and will be in charge of sales throughout the entire East Coast of the US.

The Canadian territory is now back in the hands of Aviom's longtime international sales director, Joel Brazy, who also continues to oversee the company's European sales efforts.

The Aviom sales force is managed by national sales director Gary Lee, under the leadership of Aviom's new vice president of sales & marketing, Mike McGinn.

Spain - The Spanish production of the hit musical We Will Rock You recently returned to Madrid's Calderón Theatre after a successful national tour, complete with a Cadac J-Type Live Production Console supplied by local rental company Milán Acústica.

Featuring sound design by Javier G Isequilla, the show has been touring around Spain for the past two years, and was initially scheduled to run in Madrid for a three-month period. This has been extended until the end of 2007, thanks to the show's continuing popularity and excellent ticket sales, which won We Will Rock You the coveted Gold Ticket Award.

UK - Fleetwood Mobiles recorded the recent Roger Waters tour dates in Birmingham and Manchester. The tour's production manager Andrew Zweck, who commissioned Fleetwood Mobiles to record the Manchester M.E.N Arena and Birmingham NEC concerts, says: "We were very happy with the job that Fleetwood did and everything went very smoothly at both concert venues."

The Fleetwood team consisted of Tim Summerhayes, Ollie Nesham and Matt Wood, who worked alongside Waters' long-time friend and producer James Guthrie to capture the audio in 5.1 surround sound. The concerts were also filmed in HD, with Nick Morris as director of photography.

"We recorded the audio in 48k, 96-bit using three RADARs as a 72-track and Pyramix for back-up," Summerhayes explains. "We understand the recording is being used for Roger's personal archive."

UK - Liverpool-based Adlib Audio supplied a Nexo Alpha PA and lighting system to the recent Hanson tour. This follows on from Adlib's previous work with the band on their two previous UK tours. Chris Sudall babysat at FOH for the band's engineer Kevin James, while Steve Cole mixed and looked after monitor world.

The PA configuration was ground stacked and consisted of six Nexo Alpha M3 mid/tops, six B1 bass enclosures & four S2 subs a side. For the larger venues they added more M3s for in-fills and out-fills as required, and they also toured and used Adlib FD2 cabinets for in-fills.

The FOH desk was a Yamaha PM5D, on which they fully utilised its onboard effects and processing plus the proprietary Nexo processors. The desk also had enough space on which to fit the opening act.

UK - Videoconferencing veteran Impact Marcom has upgraded its Hire Division's wireless microphone stock by investing in eight channels of AKG WMS 4000, which were supplied by Harman Pro UK.

John Moore, Impact Marcom's UK rental manager, says: "The wireless microphones we were using had become outdated and unreliable so we investigated an alternative and decided on the AKG system because it is very high quality. Our technicians were impressed by the features on offer, in particular the ability to scan radio frequencies to ensure we didn't conflict with other wireless microphone users in the same venue.
