Europe - Turbosound reports that its Aspect series products are being deployed by UK rental company WE Audio, for the current European tour by Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. The tour follows WE Audio's concert and festival successes with Aspect during the summer and, with the resultant growth of interest in its services, WE Audio has placed an order for a further 12 stacks of Aspect, as well as an additional 8 Turbosound TSW-218double-18" sub-bass enclosures.

Taking in over 50 dates across western and eastern Europe, the one-truck Rhythm Kings tour is visiting venues with audience capacities ranging from 500 to over 3,000. WE Audio is covering these capacities with just 12stacks of Aspect touring cabinets, with each stack comprising a TA-890H mid-high and TA-890L bass cabinet.

The Aspect loudspeakers are being flown as a 3 x 2 left-right system, with ground-stacked TSW-218 su

USA - The musical Rent has been running for ten years at Broadway's Nederlander theatre . Recently, Sound designer Brian Ronan was charged with replacing the sound system and opted for self-powered loudspeakers from Meyer Sound.

Achieving the required clarity is fairly straightforward on the orchestra level of the 1,200-seat house, but not as easy in the steeply-raked 500-seat balcony. "The Nederlander is a room with two very different sounds upstairs and down," Ronan explains. "It's fairly predictable and consistent on the orchestra floor, a nice combo of reflective and absorbent surfaces. But the balcony is a very reflective space, which is subject to drastic changes in response due to humidity."

Despite the differing needs of the upper and lower parts of the hall, Ronan had little time to experiment on the long-running show. "It's very unusu

UK - Following the launch at the end of June of Belgacom TV, a digital TV package offering a range of channels including film and sports, Belgacom, the leading telecommunications company in Belgium, has recently installed a full digital I/O Sy80 mixing console from InnovaSON in a new control room dedicated to the European Soccer Championships at its Net Center in Brussels.

The move comes as a result of Belgacom Skynet's acquisition of the TV broadcasting rights to the Belgian Jupiler League and the Italian A Series, enabling Belgacom TV to offer viewers the nine Jupiler League matches every weekend, as well as the three best Calcio matches from the Italian A Series. Belgacom also broadcasts to other cable TV and pay-per-view channels.

The installation was handled by Unitecnic, a Spanish audio visual systems integrator specialising in broadcast applications who won the bid issu

UK - Capital Sound Hire set three separate production levels (for theatres, small arenas and large arenas) for comedian Lee Evans' current tour - based around Martin Audio line array (and non-line array) components. Evans' gags are embroidered by numerous 'pops' (the mic is used as a stage prop), VT play-ins and a closing song which he delivers on mandolin.

During soundcheck at Hallam FM Arena, the artist listened carefully to the playback of his mandolin track at the three different delay points (each containing three clusters of four Martin W8C's). He is equally concerned about his monitor sound - and although production carries Martin Audio LE12J floor wedges, these are generally forsaken in favour of boosted side fills (provided by six Martin Audio W8LM Mini Line Arrays).

The shows are promoted by Off The Kerb and the production manager is Mark Harris. Capital Sound Hire,

Belgium - Mixing Fun Lovin' Criminals through the house system at Brussels' 2,000-capacity Ancienne Belgique theatre may seem a far cry from Oasis at Knebworth Park in 1996 for top sound engineer Huw Richards, but it provided the opportunity for a good workout for Digidesign's Venue mixing environment.

While the tour had picked up production from Tour Tech on the UK leg, in northern Europe they were flying solo, dependent on whatever the house threw at them. For instance, the previous night they had had the luxury of playing through a brand new Line Array at Het Paard in The Hague, while in Brussels it was through a classic, but ageing conventional stacked system.

After being introduced to Venue by Robbie Allen while babysitting the Manic Street Preachers last year, Richards then spent three weeks in Brazil on the board, taking over the Placebo reins from Ian Nelson. "Ven

Sweden - Lab.gruppen's recently introduced C Series power amplification solutions for permanent installations are now shipping. In addition to the three previously announced, Lab.gruppen has announced a new model - the C 68:4. This model offers the same features as all other C Series models: four channels packed in two rack units, bridgeable channel pairs, adjustable gain and output voltage, NomadLink networking and monitoring, as well as advanced protection circuitry.

All C Series models incorporate patented Class TD design and regulated switch mode power supply, enabling all models, including the C 16:4, to drive a wide range of loads from 2 ohms to high-impedance 70/100V constant voltage lines directly. With only four models, C Series offers a power range from 300W to 3400W.

The built-in NomadLink network interface enables all C Series amplifiers to be easily monitored and

UK - Alto has increased its PA speaker range with the launch of the new ELV series, reports UK distributor Proel (International). The ELV range builds on Alto's policy of using European design know-how coupled to Chinese mass-production ability.

All the ELV models are housed in wood enclosures and are fully black carpet covered to offer enduring on-stage looks, plus maximum sound quality.

The range begins with the 10" woofer plus 1" compression driver equipped ELV 10, which will handle 200 Watts. Succeeding models (there are 12 in all) include both active and passive versions in a variety of speaker configurations, using 12" and 15" drivers. Top of the passive series is the ELV 15, which uses a 15" woofer, 1" compression driver, will handle 500 Watts, and has built-in electronic protection.

UK - Having made an impact on the live audio scene in the handful of years it has been available in the UK, JTS has now turned its attention to the project, commercial and broadcast studio market with the launch of the JS-1 studio mic.

The JS-1 is a cardioid response, large diaphragm condenser microphone, designed to fulfill a variety of roles. The manufacturer says it is specially suited to applications such as vocals (including speech), general orchestral and spot miking of wind, brass and woodwind instruments, as well as strings (particularly cello and double bass) plus piano and percussion. It is also well-suited to for overhead drum and percussion applications.

The design criteria of for the JS-1 were strict - to offer exceptional performance in both acoustic and physical terms. The former is achieved by the use of a one inch super-thin 24K gold-plated externally biased M

UK - Norfolk-based PA Company, K Tech Music Services, has purchased an Allen & Heath GL2800 multi-purpose live sound console as part of an expansion of the company's hire stock. Operating in the East Anglia region, K Tech manages sound systems for a diverse range of local events from rock festivals to religious groups.

"This was highlighted this summer during a gig with a visiting community gospel choir from Tottenham. Apart from the usual band instruments and vocal inputs, everyone wanted monitors! The desk coped well but I realized we needed a larger desk with more features if we were to keep providing good service," says K Tech's owner, Ken Tarling.

Tarling opted for a 48-channel GL2800, part of the new range of GL mixers from Allen & Heath. "We already own an Allen & Heath GL2200 24-channel desk, which was chosen because of its dual functionality - an import

UK - Dennis Fernandez, front-of-house engineer for Stiff Little Fingers is a major fan of Audio-Technica microphones, and has kitted out the band's vocals and virtually the entire backline from the A-T range.

The band has just come off the road after a four-week UK tour, and will be touring Ireland in December, as well as playing a number of gigs across the country. Dennis has worked with SLF for more than four years, and in that time has worked hard with the band to develop engineering and mic techniques to get the very best sound, and capture the full excitement of their performance. Dennis's vocal mic of choice is the Artist Elite AE5400 cardioid condenser, perhaps not what you would immediately expect a singer like Jake Burns to use.

"Jake's vocal range has a lot of hi-mid frequencies, and being punk, the guitars are very hi-mid as well," says Fernandez. "

Russia - MC2 Audio recently made its Russian debut with distributor Pro Audio & Light at Music Moscow 2005 held at the Cultural Exhibition Center 'Sokolniki' in Moscow. "We are now in our 21st year of business," says Pro Audio & Light's Sergei Korovin. "We've been exhibiting at Music Moscow since it started 11 years ago, but this is the first time we've shown MC2 amplifiers there, although we have exhibited monitor loudspeakers from MC2 sister company Quested for many years."

"We had 12 MC2 amplifiers in our system rack, plus racks that were powering Turbosound's Aspect system on another booth in the 'Loud Hall'. The Russian market hadn't seen such a top class product before and they were very well received. Conversely, Quested is a very well known product in Russia and the CIS countries and there is an increasing trend for people to use these monitors i

The new additions are available either online (www.canford.co.uk) or via the company's telephone sales lines. All pricing, full technical details and application notes are initially to be found online.

Canford's already wide range, encompassing over 12,000 lines, has just grown by more than 800 items. Canford signalled its commitment to a fully interactive online store some years ago and has been steadily developing the site over the last five years. The size of Canford's portf

UK - Music Live, now firmly established as the UK's premier annual public music show, once again chose HK Audio to be the PA system of choice throughout the event at the NEC in Birmingham. Handling sound reinforcement duties from the main live stage to individual on-stand demo performances, this is the fifth year in succession that the HK brand has been associated with Music Live.

The show setting proved ideal for the UK launch of HK Audio's innovative COHEDRA Compact line array PA system last year, with HK's flagship COHEDRA line array system taking pride of place for 2005, specified by Q Audio due to the increased scale of this years main stage. Arrays consisted of 12 flown CDR208 mid/high units per side plus 24 ground-stacked CDR210S subwoofers, with 28.8kW of power courtesy of two of each of HK's PR8 and PR16 amp/controller racks. UK - Pro Audio Systems, the Bradford-based audio and AV rental, sales, installation, conference, and events production company, has been appointed a Midas and Klark Teknik dealer for the north west of England by the manufacturer. The deal saw Pro Audio Systems purchase three consoles for hire and demo stock: Midas Siena 480 and Verona 320 touring packages, and with a Venice 160.

Established in 1988, the fast-growing company is already a major dealer for Audio-Technica, Meyer Sound, and Sennheiser, among others. The company is experiencing particular growth in sales - both on-line and contact - while its hire and installation business also continues to expand. The requirement for a high quality audio console brand was key to the expansion of the company's product portfolio.

Operations, sales and marketing director Andy Turner is clear as to the positive effect that the addition

Canada / Australia - Canadian loudspeaker system manufacturer Adamson has expanded its distributor network to include Australia. ATT Audio Controls is based in Melbourne, and is distributor for such companies as Lake, Cadac and Kling & Freitag.

The company's founder, Frank Hinton, explained the new partnership: "In Adamson we discovered a similar corporate culture to our own. We encountered a company whose business activity is relationship based, rather than opportunistic, with a 'tell it how it is', no nonsense persona, which is exactly how we like it. Their higher than normal investment in, and allocation of resources to, client/product support, impressed us greatly. When considering the product the company produces, we looked at issues such as relativity in our particular market place along with product performance worldwide. They are clearly at the elite level."

Liechtenstein / USA - Neutrik's OpticalCon fibre optic connector system picked up its second award of the year at the LDI exhibition in Orlando, Florida on 12 November. Earlier in the year, the company collected the Pick Hit Award at the InfoComm show in June. At LDI, OpticalCon was chosen as Product of the Year 2005 in the sound category.

Neutrik's OpticalCon particularly impressed with its robustness and favourable price. A unique feature is the automatic sealing shutter with silicone gaskets to protect the optical fibre against dust and dirt. OpticalCon is available with the approved push-pull locking mechanism, say Neutrik.

The Neutrik group is the worldwide leading manufacturer of professional connector systems for the entertainment industry. The array of products ranges from XLR connector systems, jacks and plugs, loudspeaker connector systems, patch panels, coaxial conn

Denmark - On 22 October, over 80 million viewers tuned in for a show broadcast from the Forum events centre in Copenhagen called Congratulations! - a gala celebrating 50 years of the Eurovision Song Contest. Nordic Rental was commissioned to handle the sound, opting for line array systems from Electro-Voice.

Lasting over two and a half hours, Congratulations! looked back over the first half century of the contest, to which acts like ABBA, Cliff Richard, Johnny Logan and Nicole - all former winners - owed much of their success, and viewers were invited to phone in their choice for the best song in the Eurovision's 50 year history from a shortlist of 14, not all of which actually won the competition the year they were entered. The winner by a large margin was ABBA's Waterloo, written Benny Andersson (who admitted to having voted personally for the second place

UK - Motorhead return for their 30th anniversary tour of Europe and the UK, which kicked off in the UK at the end of October and runs for eight weeks until Christmas. As they have done for the last 27 years, Audiolease is supplying PA, and has invested in a brand-new Midas Heritage 3000 for the shows, purchased from Marquee Audio.

Like Motorhead, Audiolease's Steve Sunderland can look back to the '70s when it all started. "I've always liked Midas, and, as a general rule, over the years we've always stuck to it. Everybody knows where they are with Midas, quite literally, as the ergonomics are so well-known by today's engineers. The general consensus is that they're the best-sounding desks ever made."

The new Heritage 3000 console is being used by front-of-house engineer Dave Hillsden. There is another Midas desk on monitors, where engineer Ian Dobbie is using an XL3.

UK - Soundcraft found themselves up in court this month - and all for trying to help the BBC's Children in Need fundraiser. It came about when Michelle Brinkley from Hertfordshire Coroner's Office sent out a call for help and told Soundcraft that the local Coroner's unit were putting together a band - fittingly calling itself the Deathwatch Beetles - and needed auxiliary sound equipment.

Soundcraft quickly came to the rescue, supplying one of the company's popular GigRac 600 fully-featured 8-channel amp mixers, and six AKG D880 mics. Soundcraft supported the band through their rehearsals - which took place inside the Hatfield Coroner's Court - before the main fund-raising event, organised by Hertfordshire Police Officers at nearby Stanborough School.

Spurred on by a mention on Terry Wogan's radio show (which resulted in a Good Luck card from Mark Knopfler), and led by semi-pro

Australia - In Victoria, Drama is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing subjects on the High School curriculum, particularly among VCE (year 11 and 12) students. Caulfield Grammar School recently addressed this trend by investing in two new, identical new Performing Arts Centres - one at its Caulfield Campus and one at its Wheelers Hill campus.

Architects John Gribble Pty Ltd designed a functional space with the assistance of theatre consultants Entertech and electrical engineers Adrian Newman & Associates. With 16 years' experience in the industry, Lightmoves was contracted to provide lighting and audio visual infrastructure throughout both venues.
