UK - The first two Midas Siena consoles off the production line have headed north to brand new live music complex The Sage Gateshead. Opened in December 2004, the £70 million Norman Foster-designed home for music and musical discovery is a fitting first for the highly flexible console which is equally at home on monitors or at FOH.

The Sienas were specified by The Sage Gateshead's head of technical operations, Chris Durant, who was so confident in the new console that he placed the order before it went into production. Midas and Klark Teknik brand development manager Richard Ferriday, together with Sean Hames from Midas dealer LMC Audio which supplied the consoles, paid a visit to Durant last May armed with a confidentiality agreement and the first full-scale layout drawing of Siena. Once Durant and senior technician Dan Adams were assured that the new console would fulfill the

UK - The R & B group - a North of England conference provider - recently took delivery of eight new KV2 Audio EX 10's to enhance the audio side of its hire stock. Based in Newcastle, and looking after a multitude of clients including, The Sage Theatre, Inside Communications and RCN Congress, the company has been waiting for a flexible but highly portable solution such as Ex 10 for some time.

Ian Byrom, project manager, picks up the story. "We first heard the EX 10's at PLASA and from that point arranged a demo in a venue local to us, the Newcastle City Hall. At that demo we were amazed by the clarity and throw of such small boxes even in such a large hall, and knew immediately that they would fit the bill in satisfying our more discerning conference clients.

Being individually powered they are also incredibly flexible, and if required we can easily delay certain areas wit

UK - The Fuel concept, created by Richie Warren, is part record company, part dance culture and very much a bass-heavy roadshow - utilizing an XTA-controlled Funktion One sound system built into a pair of American muscle cars. The Fuel Roadshow visits major auto and music events across the UK and Ireland, with their two Dodge Challenger sound-system cars - rigs that look, sound and feel incredible, according to Fuel. The XTA DP224 and DP6i act as crossovers at the centre of the system.

The Fuel sound system has become infamous for its uncompromising approach to quality. It has been set up at parties and clubs, including the MaxxPower after-show party, where DJs Tim Westwood, Deekline, MJ Cole, Richie Don, Lawgiverz and the Ragga Twins played to thousands of Fuel fans. In January 2005, Fuel went indoors and installed a Funktion One sound system into the Medicine Bar, part of the

Norway - For Video 4, EVI Audio's new intercom distributor in Norway, the LLB trade show in Oslo (10-12 February 2005) was just the start they wanted. The company reports making numerous contacts and receiving highly enthusiastic feedback. Attracting the most interest on the stand was the BTR-700 wireless system from RTS/Telex. Manuel Brico, Telex product manager for EAME, who with Peter Roberts, the new sales manager for Intercom Europe, was supporting the Video 4 team at the show, was delighted by the response, commenting: "The BTR-700 was the absolute show-stopper at the LLB. The large number of enquiries augurs well for a great success."

Founded in 1998, Video 4 also includes in its portfolio audio/video matrix signal distributors and a complete range of camera accessories. EVI Audio is happy to have found in Video 4 a greatly respected, efficient and highly motiv

USA / Germany - From 1 April 2005, Blue Microphones' range of high-quality studio and home-recording microphones will be distributed by EVI Audio outside the USA and Japan. The microphones of the Californian company, which have won numerous accolades for their design and performance, complement EVI Audio's existing range in the microphone sector. During the Frankfurt ProLight&Sound exhibition (6-9 April 2005), EVI Audio will be presenting the current Blue Microphones product line, including two models produced exclusively for Electro-Voice: the Cardinal and the Raven.

As Mathias von Heydekampf, President Telex Pro Audio, explains: "There are three good reasons for the new partnership with Blue Microphones. Firstly, Blue Microphones is an undeniable force on the studio scene; their products - like all of ours - are solutions, not 'me too' products. Secondly, we are convince

UK - The new Siena console has already lived up to the Midas legend by making an early appearance with Mr Robert Plant, who performed at the annual MAS Records evening at Kidderminster Town Hall.

Plant is a patron of MAS Records, which was set up to provide expertise and resources for the development of music, and has close ties with the community in the Kidderminster area, where Midas is based. Although Plant has attended the annual MAS event in the past, this was the first time he'd performed. This year's event was being filmed for a DVD, with proceeds being donated to the Artist Legacy Fund, an organization that provides talented musicians with support to promote and develop their work.

"Because it was being filmed and recorded, and featured such a high profile singer as Robert, MAS needed high quality equipment, and this is where Midas came in," says Kevyn Gammon

Greece - The first-ever installation of HK Audio's Cohedra Compact system was carried out at the end of 2004 at the Maya Club in Larisa, central Greece, by HK's Greek distributor Space Lights, in conjunction with their local dealer, Master Voice. The Maya Club, located in a converted warehouse, has seating room for around 1,000 people, which includes the balcony areas. The system is being used for live Greek performances and also for DJs playing pop and dance music.

Space Lights and Master Voice installed a system consisting of 12 CDR 108 mid/high units with eight CDR 210 subwoofers and four IL8.1 very compact vocal full-range cabinets for front-fill. Six CDR 108 cabinets were rigged at each side of the stage at a height of 6m, with the IL 8.1s positioned so they provide coverage for the front tables. The system is powered by one VX 1200 and nine VX 2400 power amplifiers, and is

Belgium - EML Productions has begun a two-year programme to replace all the processors in its inventory with IX 48 Intelli-X Speaker Management Systems from Apex. The upgrade represents a substantial investment in floating-point processing technology, with 28 Intelli-X units arriving in the first phase of the programme, rising to a total of 50 units.

In previous years, EML has been using BSS speaker management systems, but, according to Patrick Demoustier, the older generation of fixed-point processors is now struggling to deliver the processing power demanded by line arrays like the Adamson system used by EML. After an extensive period of researching the market, Demoustier has chosen the new Intelli-X digital speaker management processor, which tested just ahead of a comparable unit from Australian manufacturer Lake Technology.

Spain - The first Spanish rental companies to invest in HK Audio's Cohedra Compact Coherent Dynamic Response Array system have joined forces to start a local Cohedra Compact network. Both Andalusia-based companies have purchased systems of 16 CDR 108 C mid/high cabinets with eight CDR 210 C subwoofers and two PR 8 amp racks - a so-called 2x8 system. Each rig can be split into two ground-stacked systems for smaller gigs by use of an additional Digital Field Controller with PB 2 patchbays in each rack.

Sonilprof, located in Algeciras, and Proinso in Huelva are long-term HK Audio users, with each rental company boasting a substantial inventory. Both have been proactive in establishing Cohedra in Spain, with Sonilprof owner Santiago Sánchez García arranging a major demonstration of the system last year in the Algeciras bullring (see newsletter dated June 1, 2004). USA / Africa - The Ernest Angley Minsitries based at Grace Cathedral in Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, is about to embark on another crusade to Africa and, for the first time, is relying exclusively on a DiGiCo D1 Live for all their audio mixing. The crusades will travel to Namibia and Lesotho, and services will be held during the first three weeks of April, four to five nights a week. Most of the venues will be outdoor soccer fields, which will accommodate crowds from 30,000 to well over 200,000. There will be two stages at each location, with the ministry's vocal trio performing to pre-recorded tracks on the main stage and local choirs and bands performing on a second stage at the side of the main stage.

"We're using the DiGiCo D1 exclusively," explains Bruce Ober, senior audio engineer with Ernest Angley. "The size to processing power ratio of the D1 gave DiGiCo'

USA - Usher has been likened to this generation's Marvin Gaye - a Grammy winner and multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter, dancer, actor and activist. At the age of only 25, he's entering his second decade as a successful artist, riding the top of the charts with his fifth album, Confessions, and selling out concert venues as soon as the dates are announced.

Veteran programmer/engineer Herman Ward has been running the mix for the Usher tour, covering live shows and special events like the recent Showtime special. Ward, who has worked with a diverse mix of artists including Limp Bizkit, Prince, Luther Vandross and Klymaxx, recently put the band in the hands of Mackie's new TT24 digital live mixer, a move he says simplified life for him and the performers he takes care of.

"This is a fast moving show, and with our last digital mixer it sometimes took too long to ste

UK - Aztec Events, a company providing events management and production for major-league corporate clients, has purchased four Soundcraft GB4 consoles. "We bought the mixers to use in conferencing environments, although we do events including product launches and fashion shows, as well as meetings of all sorts," explained Aztec warehouse manager Samer Sahmani. "One of the reasons we went for them is that our older desks are Spirit by Soundcraft, which we have had for some years.

"We have had good experiences with them and they are in constant use on a daily basis," Sahmani added. "We have been very satisfied with the quality of sound, as well as their reliability and low maintenance requirements.

"Mixing desks aren't something you buy on a daily basis. When we bought Soundcaft the second time round, we did so in the knowledge that we would b

UK - V1.06 of the London Architect design and control application from BSS Audio brings totally new power and functionality to programmable DSP systems, allowing control of both signal processing and Crown amplifiers and including programmable logic, event scheduling and settings libraries to a depth and flexibility not offered by any other system, say the company.

Logic brings unparalleled functionality to complex applications. For example, room combining systems can be constructed that automatically reset EQs, delays and source and output routings depending on the physical states of room dividers. Classic 'computer logic' functions are used to accomplish this, such as AND, OR, NOR and NAND gates, as well as triggers, logic pulses and truth tables. Careful pre-engineering and the use of external control inputs can result in systems that perform complex automated tasks triggere

USA - Veteran FOH engineer Steve Cochran has joined Meyer Sound in the role of touring and sales support. Cochran will join tour liaison Buford Jones in staffing the company's Nashville office, located in the famed Soundcheck rehearsal complex. Cochran's duties will focus on applications, such as assisting artists and engineers working with Meyer equipment in the Soundcheck facility, and participating in educational seminars and training in the Nashville area.

Before joining Meyer Sound, Cochran most recently spent a year mixing FOH for country star LeAnn Rimes, but his history also includes 12 years of FOH work with Ricky Van Shelton, monitor and FOH duties with Julio Iglesias, and a 15-year association with Wolf Sound of Miami, who first introduced him to Meyer Sound products. Recently, Cochran also has been mixing showcases for Hot Apple Pie, one of Nashville's hottest break

UK - Audio distributor Autograph Sales has supplied a unique line source loudspeaker system from LDS, for On The Town, the first ever musical staged by the English National Opera (ENO). This unique production is now playing at their restored home, the London Coliseum, until the end of May.

The LDS system was specified by sound designer Nick Lidster, who faced several challenges when designing this premier production. The loudspeaker installation had to be discreet, especially as it stays rigged during other opera performances in the ENO spring season, while also being aesthetically pleasing against the backdrop of the Grade II listed auditorium. Finally, fitting sound reinforcement into a venue designed for acoustic performances was never going to be a straightforward task.

To meet these conflicting demands, a unique cantilevered rigging system was designed by ENO's i
