Caribiner International has launched a new name and identity. The company will be known as Jack Morton Worldwide after merging with its American counterpart of the same name. The company has an impressive client list and was responsible for the public arena installations in the Millennium Dome and at the Hanover World Expo 2000. Recent projects include the Special Olympics World Games Opening Ceremonies, The Royal Military Tattoo and the Queen Mother Celebrations on Horse Guards Parade. The new combined company represents a worldwide community of over 1200 people in more than 30 locations in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The fuel crisis must have come as a blessed relief to the Dome, but it hasn't taken the attraction long to be back in the media spotlight. Just a week after Nomura withdrew from its bid, the police are currently carrying out an investigation into fraud allegations. Apparently these centre around "irregularities" in connection with the procurement of contracts, and media reports are suggesting that the firm under investigation was one of the contractors working for the New Millennium Experience Company (NMEC). Nomura of course pulled out on the basis that they had been misled over the Dome's finances.

One of London's most famous live music venues, The Astoria, is currently undergoing an extensive technical refit, having been acquired by The Mean Fiddler Organisation, a dominant force in the British entertainment scene. In addition to raising the specification for visiting sound crews, the objective was to make the Astoria's infrastructure more broadcast and TV-friendly, including the addition of a new 48-way patchbay, according to long-time resident technician Erik Sanderson-Evans. Tarsin Entertainments was awarded the contract after a competitive tender, with the new inventory of kit mostly supplied by Marquee Audio. South west-based rental company, CAV, has recently taken delivery of a 48-channel Midas Heritage 3000 mixing console purchased from the Birmingham branch of LMC Audio Systems. For CAV proprietor, Hans Beier, this is his first Midas purchase. In the short time that the desk has been resident at CAV it has already travelled down to Jersey for an event there, and upon its return went straight out to major UK festival, V2000.

DPA Microphones in Denmark continues on its impressive expansion curve, and has again increased the strength of its sales department, recruiting Steffen Leth Møller to the European team. He takes up the role of area manager, working right across the continent. Prior to joining DPA Microphones, he completed a four-year technical education as an export technician and spent five years with the Michelin Group in Denmark, where he was a technical sales representative.

A Mach SlingShot audio rig made a successful Glastonbury debut on the New Bands' stage at this year's legendary festival. Glastonbury is the largest outdoor music festival in the UK, with more than 100,000 visitors braving the elements to enjoy performances by over 50 bands. As in previous years, the production company Reality Check took overall responsibility for the New Bands stage, but all sound reinforcement was controlled by Mark Bott from South West Audio. His team comprised of Mike Taylor leading the monitor team and Amble Skuse in charge of the stage team. The Mach SlingShot rig consisted of a custom 3 by 3 rig sited each side of the stage. Each rig comprised six MS1262 and three MS15X2 top boxes, which were supported by a total of 16 M182T subwoofers. The complete array amounted to 18 loudspeaker stacks.

Continuing expansion at Logic System Pro Audio has seen the recent appointment of Jenna Mckirgan to the position of administration assistant. Based at the company's Gainsborough factory, Mckirgan will be responsible for purchasing and general sales support. Working closely with Dean Davoile, who will be the first point of contact for customers calling the office.

London-based rental company, Dobson Sound Productions Ltd, provided all the audio requirements for a one-off concert of the Mediaeval Baebes in north London. The Baebes are a 12-piece all female vocal group whose work consists mainly of mediaeval-style choral music accompanied by a variety of instruments from recorders, violins, and other stringed and percussion instruments of the period. Working with production manager, Jamie Harley, who also engineers for the band, Dobson provided a d&b C6 and C7 system with a Yamaha PM3500 console.

SCV London has been appointed the UK distributor of of Sincrosoft - manufacturers of the Opus notation package. Compatible with both Mac and PC, the programme provides an array of easy-to-use features including 12 ways to display time signatures and 12 options for sub-grouping notes and beams. The system has full MIDI playback and recording support and can provide a professional print. SCV has also taken on the distributorship of International Print Edition (IPE), the company responsible for (in conjunction with Melbay), The Masters' Collection - a library of digital scores from famous composers.

At this year's graduation ceremony for The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Professor Dr Jorg Sennheiser, presented the inaugural Sennheiser Student Achievement Awards. The ceremony, held in the art-deco splendour of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, saw Professor Sennheiser share the stage with lead patron Sir Paul McCartney, principal and chief executive Mark Featherstone-Witty and almost 200 graduating LIPA students. Professor Sennheiser presented the three achievement awards to a total of five students for work of outstanding merit in both recording production and theatrical sound design. Among the graduating students was Adam Fulton, who was awarded a first class Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Sound technology; the second Sennheiser scholarship student to graduate and achieve a first.

Clockwork AV has recently installed an RCF sound system at the Gateshead International Athletic Stadium. Following a number of demonstrations, the stadium's local council chose the RCF system for its melodic feel - which was an important factor for the project. Clockwork AV specified a Vision system comprising 14 Vision PA121s and two Vision PA180 SWs situated in the main grandstand, five Vision PA261s in the East stand and 15 pairs of waterproof Monitor 4Ts located in the North and South seating areas.

The Sound Company is supplying the sound equipment for three of the latest plays to open in London's West End - The Puppetry of the Penis, The Blue Room and The Guardsman. Puppetry, which opened on Monday 18 September at The Whitehall Theatre, features two well-endowed young men with no pants! It arrives hot from The Edinburgh Festival where it received rave reviews. The show, already causing a huge stir, is produced by Richard Temple and David Johnson and is the fourth production the Sound Company and Richard Temple have done together. The second of the three to open, The Blue Room, based on the infamous La Ronda, opens on 28 September at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. Canford Audio has acquired the design rights to the range of broadcast audio products previously supplied by Audio Systems Components Ltd (ASC). This well-known and respected range, including the Buddy PC Workstation, MD-Report! location recorder, Minx OB mixer and the Talking Brick workstation loudspeaker as well as VHF tuners with pro-conversions, is now manufactured a its Washington (UK) facility. At the same time, UK distribution and support of the ISDN products from Spanish manufacturer Prodys has also moved to Canford. This includes not only the established Pronto series, but the new Nomada portable contribution unit, and Multiplexer 2MB link equipment.

A new simultaneous translation facility, incorporating a Sennheiser infra-red transmission system and Evolution wireless microphones, has been installed by London-based M&R Communications, as part of a major refurbishment to the Congress Hall at the Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria. The system has been specified to accommodate pan-national conference requirements and the six-channel Sennheiser infra-red system includes over 1,200 stethoset receivers, COM 1423 gooseneck microphones and MKH 40 cardioid condenser mics for the lectern. A smaller two-channel portable system was also provided for smaller bilingual meetings.

HSL Productions has made a large and carefully calculated investment in a Crest and Community touring system. The decision was made principally with the Performing Arts Management summer tour in mind, however the company wanted a system capable of reproducing any musical genre. At the heart is the flagship 52-channel (48 + 4) Crest V12 mixing console.In addition to the V12, HSL has placed additional orders with Sound Dept for a 40-channel Crest XVCA console and a 32-channel XM monitor desk, to complement its existing Crest console range. Having converted the company's amplifier stock to Crest 18 months ago Simon Stuart confirmed that HSL have purchased an additional 60kW of Crest CA18s and CA9s to drive its newly-acquired PA system, which comprises 24 stacks of Community SLS-960 mid/tops, with VLF-218 bass cabinets.

Canford now has a new sales and operations director. The ex commercial-radio engineer turned entrepreneur, Iain Elliott, who founded the outfit back in the seventies, has returned to the fold. Whilst Elliot concentrates on the product and customer side of the operation, Phil Buckle, a man with a wealth of manufacturing and distribution experience, has joined as chief executive. With the appointments Canford is now back to the course set years ago, with "engineers communicating with engineers", and a commitment to the continuation and development of the the Canford catalogue, now in its 20th year of production.

The SS Ausonia, a recently-refurbished luxury cruise ship contracted to First Choice Holidays by Louis Cruise Lines, has had a state-of-the-art audio design specified by cruise line specialists, Fisher Marine. The equipment installation was carried out by Louis Cruise Lines' own contractors. The Halifax-based company used a wide range of Martin Audio loudspeakers as their primary sound reinforcement source in the three main zones - the main and secondary show lounges (which are multi-purpose, transforming into cabaret and late night discotheque usage) and the main deck, which also features a massive lighting rig. The system on the Ausonia, which has its audio presets stored and relayed to the different show areas by three BSS Audio Soundweb devices, will be fed from a mixture of CD and Minidisc playback sources, as well as live cabaret through a radio mic system.

Federal Signal has announced the return to the company of Alan Weston as area sales manager for the North of England and Scotland. His appointment coincides with the restructure of the firm's national sales force and the launch of a new range of products from the Millbank public address range. Weston, who has vast experience in the voice alarm industry, rejoins Federal from specialist public address installer TG Baker Sound. In addition to developing markets for existing and new Millbank products, he will also focus on the company's Akusta products, dedicated to the oil and gas sectors.

Graham has 10 years' industry experience and has worked for several major players including Behringer, Shuttlesound and more recently with Sysco (The Systems Company). During this year's PLASA Show, the third consecutive UK Midas Dinner was held at the exclusive Teatro Club & Restaurant in Soho. Organised by LMC Audio Systems Limited, the UK's exclusive Midas dealer, the dinner was as usual an extravagant affair with all UK Midas owners invited, and attendance exceeded any other year. Teatro is owned by celebrity couple Lee Chapman and Lesley Ash and was chosen as the venue for the dinner due to it's discreet service and outstanding food along with a modern 'gentleman's club' atmosphere. This year special attention was given to the many New Midas Owners, which included The Lemon Tree, Orbital, Rambert Dance Company and Dicker Sound.

The Oxford Sound Company recently completed the installation of two BBC studios designed for Voice Captioning, based around AMS-Neve Libra digital mixing consoles and AMS-Neve Audiofile digital editing workstations. The two identical studios will be used for making trailers for programmes and adding soundtracks to pictures for the introduction and conclusion of television programmes. The project, designed by BBC Resources Consulting and Projects under the management of BBC's Peter Newbury, took 16 weeks to complete. It was designed around the AMS control surfaces with an impressive line up of outboard processing from Calrec, Focusright, Yamaha, AMS, TC Electronic and Drawmer, with loudspeaker monitors from ATC.
