UK - After a decade away from the stage, Portishead could easily have looked a little rusty at the kick-off of their first British tour this millennium. But not only were the Bristol trio on form musically, but the stage was enhanced by a dramatic visual landscape, supplied by PSL.

To mark the release of their fourth album Third, the so-called trip-hop band from Bristol has been touring Europe with visual design that matches artist John Minton's creative concepts with PSL display technology.

Behind the stage, three separate projection screens are used in combination, with either three individual displays or as one large landscape. A multitude of small cameras, positioned all over the stage amongst the musicians, provide live footage, which is also processed as a feedback effect and relayed onto the screen.

Visual artist John Minton explains that he wanted to keep the

UK - Lloyds TSB recently organised an interactive conference for 1,300 CSMs (Customer Service Managers) in Olympia as the launch to a new training initiative. Echoing the coaching and training aspect and in line with Lloyds TSB's drive to become Britain's most recommended Bank, the event was themed Strictly Recommended and the stage featured a PixelArt staircase on which the dancers from the TV show made a grand entrance.

Lighting designer Nick Gray explains: "For this show we wanted something a bit more subtle than a PixelLine 1044 or 110, but with just as much punch! The new PixelArt batten fitted the requirements perfectly." The stairwell contained 24 PixelArts which complemented the theatrics of the rest of the stage set - and their bright intensity was exactly what was needed for an opening entrance.

Nick continues: "We were looking for a more defined look

USA - Bandit Lites recently lit the University of Tennessee (UT) spring graduation ceremony, which took place over two days in early-May at the university's Thompson-Boling Arena.

Lighting designer, Greg Shipley primarily chose to use Coemar Halos, Martin MAC 2000Performances and MAC 600s to light the event. Lighting was controlled by a Compulite Vector Red.

Martin MAC 2000 Performances were used to provide an animated stage background. Custom glass gobos with the UT logo were projected onto the center screen. Shipley also added a water effect behind the UT logo using animation wheels. In addition to providing a stage wash, the Coemar Halos were used to light a brass band, which played offstage for the graduation entrance. Large projection screens with live footage of the event were added to either side of the stage. The event was also projected on the arena's newly renovated

UK - Popular 1980s synthpop duo Yazoo (Alison Moyet & Vince Clark) have reformed for a short high profile tour, currently on its UK leg.

Lighting designer Nic Ayres chose Robe for his moving lights, which are supplied by Southampton-based rental company GLS, along with the rest of the lighting kit and technician Karen Brown. The stylish and minimal video-based scenic design was created by Bruce French. This gives the stage its basic architecture and definition, with two different sized Element Labs Stealth screen panels upstage, and eight 11m fingers of Superlite truss loaded with VersaTubes forming a gently asymmetric arc above the stage.

Content for the VersaTubes and the Stealth has been custom created by Mark Video, and he and Ayres worked closely during production rehearsals to ensure that lighting and video combine into coherent and seamless visual pictures for the show.

USA - Unlimited Visibility Lighting Design (UVLD) combined its expertise at lighting automobiles and corporate events when it designed BMW's twin presentations in Atlanta recently. The three-day event, produced by Media Loft, was held to reveal new products and company plans to the BMW team. Tony Siekman of The WIT Company was the technical director.

BMW led off the three-day gathering by unveiling the BMW X6 SUV in an airplane hangar at the DeKalb Atlanta executive airport. The reveal carried the theme 'Ready for Take Off,' in the converted airplane hangar that had been carpeted, furnished and detailed to create a ultra-modern look in line with BMW's branding. A stage was erected and a white-walled metal and plexiglass set installed. "The client was interested in a simple yet elegant lighting look," reports UVLD's Paul Sharwell who designed the lighting with UVLD's Jo

UK - Glastonbury-based supplier Batmink Ltd says it has been so impressed with the visual impact of its video dance floor that they have decided to take a demo floor on a UK 'Roadshow'.

Grant Thomas, sales director for Batmink, explains: "It soon became obvious that although still images and video footage give a flavour of what this flooring system can deliver, there is absolutely no substitute for seeing the floor operating 'in the flesh'. With this in mind, we have decided to take a 6m x 6m floor on a tour of the UK to enable interested parties to come and have a look, see a demonstration of its motion graphics and text capabilities and discuss any questions they might have."

The floor will be in Glasgow, on Monday 11 August, Leeds on Tuesday 12 August, Donington Park on Wednesday 13 August and London on Thursday 14 August. For more information regarding venues and

UAE - The TV show Millions Poet is billed as a 'Pop Idol for poets' where the winner walks away with one million UAE Dirhams (about 180,000 Euro). The show held at the 2.000 seat Al Raha Theatre in Abu Dhabi began in 2006 and has been such a phenomenal success it starts the fourth season in 2008; the last series peaked at 26 million viewers across the Arab region.

Lighting designer Paul Nancollas used one grandMA full-size, one grandMA light and five MA NSPs. "The grandMA is the only desk capable of controlling something so complex, the choice was obvious," he says.

The show also used two grandMA video servers and was visualised via grandMA 3D. The design integrated over 2500 LED strips of various types from German manufacturer Schnick-Schnack-Systems. "I had used the B25 and B12 strips in previous shows to great effect so I was very excited when the C25

Denmark - The largest superliner built exclusively for the British market, the 116,000 ton P&O Cruises Ventura, sailed on her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean, decked out in a full complement of colour and effect lighting from Martin Professional.

"In my role as entertainment consultant to P&O Cruises I was instrumental in selecting Martin as the lead supplier to provide the moving light elements of the entertainment systems for Ventura," reports Chris Blackburn of Snap2Black.

Ventura incorporates flexible Martin lighting systems into several areas of the ship. "Most major entertainment areas are multi-use, although they do have a main use focus," says Blackburn. "They all have an identity."

The two-deck Arena Theatre is the ship's primary show space. "The brief was to augment the generic rig with moving light and mirror fixtures. There w

UK - Radio 1's Massive weekend kicks off the British festival season and features some of the world's top performers over two packed days. Madonna, Usher, Raconteurs, Kooks and Editors are but a few of the brilliant acts that entertained the tens of thousand visitors to this year's festival in Maidstone.

With such an eclectic array of performers, the lighting rig needed to be equally diverse and able to adapt to each unique show. Putting it all together again this year was lighting designer Paul Normandale, who laid out a spectacular rig on the main stages for the various guest LDs who came and lit individual shows. With so many artists and so many LDs in such a short period of time, once again flexibility was the order of the day.

Paul explains the brief: "The lighting had to be suitable for a live, multi-band event which has a constant BBC/TV broadcast element. So a bal

UK - Avolites lighting consoles were once again in widespread use across the numerous stages at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival. Over 28 Avolites consoles were in action, along with at least 20 Avolites Art2000 dimmer racks.

At Jazz World, lighting was supplied by Essex-based DPL for the second year running, and designed by DPL director Pete Watts, who specified an Avo Diamond 4 Vision for his console. This was controlling 28 moving lights (a mix of Robe and Martin), an assortment of PARs, ACLs and ETC Source Four profiles, plus ChromaQ db4 LED battens, a backdrop of 42sq.m of ChromaQ ColorWeb LED and six Robe LED blinders on top of the PA towers.

The LED fixtures were fed with content from a Hippotizer v3 digital media server triggered by the D4. "The D4 is flexible, powerful and gives instant access to everything, which - when you have moving lights, generics, digital and

USA - The finale of American Idol, this year aired live to a record breaking audience of 31.7 million viewers. No less spectacular than the show-off between the finalists was the stage design, developed by Idol veteran Andy Walmsley.

Walmsley, renowned for his previous production designs for Pop Idol in the UK, turned to California-based Sweetwater Video to supply all video equipment for the show, including the 340 panels of Element Labs Stealth LED displays used to grace the stage during the finals in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Stealth panels, configured to form four strips upstage centre and additional strips above and below the main LED screen, allowed Walmsley to create a design in which video and lighting integrated seamlessly within the overall set design.

"The Nokia Theater has an enormous stage that requires a significant volume of equip

UK - Robe moving lights made an impact on many stages at Glastonbury 2008.

All lighting for the Jazz World stage was supplied by Essex-based DPL for the second year running, with 12 Robe ColorSpot 1200E ATs and six Robe ColorWash 2500E AT's taking centre stage for DPL director Pete Watts' design.

DPL installed a trussing grid underneath Jazz World's 18m Serious Stages Orbit roof, and the moving lights were arranged across that, together with a selection of generics and 42sq.m of ChromaQ ColorWeb LED as a backdrop and around the sides of stage.

Three Robe 8-lite LEDBlinder 196 LT fixtures were also rigged on top of the PA towers for audience illumination.

It was the first time that Watts had used the ColorWash 2500E ATs for one of his designs, which he describes as "Ludicrously bright" and very reliable.
