UK - HSL supplied Starsailor's LD Chris Megginson with a set of specials for their recent Fairtrade 'teaser' UK tour. The band - long term Fairtrade supporters - played 10 locations which are currently working towards achieving Fair-trade Town status as part of an ongoing consciousness raising exercise for the cause.

Being a charity tour, budget was tight, but naturally Megginson wanted to provide as good a light show as possible, and approached HSL's Mike Oates to see what they could offer in terms of a package.

He was looking for the most versatile and interesting combination of lighting fixtures that could be fitted into some very tight spaces. "HSL came up with blindingly good deal" states Megginson, who chose four of the new i-Pix BB Washlight LED fixtures, two strobes, a fogger and a WholeHog II console as his 'tour essentials' which would be combined with hous

UK - PRG Europe has been busy at London's O2, with almost every show since theArena opened being supplied by them. For Prince's 21-date residency, part of his Earth Tour at the arena, as well as over 100 MAC 2000 luminaires, the rig included Atomic strobes, ColorBlaze 72s and B52 Syncrolites.

The most interesting part of the rig, however, were the 'Prince'O'graphs' - 28 custom manufactured PRG pantographs, each with a MAC 2000 on the end, which could be lowered and raised at varying speeds creating endless different looks. The control of the pantographs was via a Kinesys Elevationhoist control system, programmed by Stuart Hale.

Denmark - Martin Professional has named Mats Karlsson as technology manager for the company's Visual Solutions business unit. Karlsson has more than 25 years of industry experience in lighting, and more recently in video, and joins Martin from Barco where he served as product manager for the company's successful line of creative LED products.

Karlsson's' role at Martin will be to strengthen the technical and marketing foundation for products within Martin Visual Solutions, a business unit of the company created earlier this year to expand business opportunities and capitalise on the growing popularity of LED video screens. Martin recently introduced its LC Series of LED video screens, a semi-transparent, modular system of lightweight LED panels.

UK / USA - Pulsar Light of Cambridge has signed an exclusive distribution agreement for the USA with Group One of Farmingdale, New York.

UK - Light Relief Day, held earlier this year to raise funds for the charity Light Relief, proved to be a great success, raising more than £5000, thanks to donations of a day's royalties from numerous lighting designers.

Now set to become an annual event, the first Light Relief Day took place on 24 April 2007, when lighting designers were asked to donate a day's royalties from their current shows. Organised by lighting designer Rick Fisher, the day is in honour of the late Tony Gottelier, who played such a big part in setting up the charity.

Light Relief exists to help lighting designers and technicians during times of hardship and Chris Luscombe was a recent beneficiary. UK - Manchester-based DBN Lighting is one of the first UK hire companies to stock the new Chroma-Q Color Split multi-purpose LED fixture.

DBN was already a keen user of Chroma-Q's Color Block modular LED fixture, which has proven ideal for lighting its diverse range of client events and is still providing a good return on investment three yearslater, says the company.

DBN lighting director Stephen Page commented: "The Color Split produces the closest light output to that of an asymmetric cyc flood, of any LED product we've seen so far and offers significantly more even colour transmission in this application than conventional LED products.

Italy - ETC is one of four companies which recently took part in a control systems seminar organised by Italian magazine Sound&Lite. The first day of the seminar in Gabicce was a conference on the next generation of lighting and control; the second was four two-hour long demonstrations of the best of those systems, including ETC's latest and most advanced control system yet, the Eos.

Fulvio Cotogni, ETC's manager for southern region, says: "The seminar had an excellent turn out and the Eos received a warm reception. The delegates were keen to see what the Eos does and how, and its award winning reputation proved to be well founded."

The Netherlands - High End Systems and Dutch dealer Improve recently held a Digital Lighting University in Delft, the Netherlands. The two-day programme, hosted 40 prominent lighting and video designers and technicians in an intimate, hands-on curriculum, teaching the intricacies of products such as DL.1 and DL.2, along with the Axon media server and other digital products.

Keynote speakers included Richard Bleasdale, Mike Redmer, Scott Chmielewski, Antoinette Wijffels and Fons Hogenes, who covered everything from case studies to the basics of art and design. Breakout sessions included workshops on configuration, content creation and programming, with 'students' actually running the range of Hog consoles and creating unique content. Live entertainment was brought in to accompany the content showing on the variety of projection surfaces in the venue.

Germany - Featuring the slogan 'See What's Driving the Future', the 62nd annual IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) ran from 13-23 September at Germany's Messe Frankfurt. The IAA, among the elite of international motor shows, attracted nearly 1 million visitors from 125 countries, making it one of the most popular in the show's history.

Top auto brands Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart plied their latest designs in the landmark Festhalle on a spectacular booth lit by TLD Planungsgruppe and incorporating over 450 Martin MAC luminaires. Lighting and set design was by TLD's Richard Profe. TLD, in cooperation with architects Kauffmann, Theilig & Partner, Freie Architekten BDA, and the communication agency Atelier Markgraph, created a highly unique presentation platform.

USA - The Venetian Hotel Resort and Casino in Las Vegas recently expanded its TAO Asian Bistro and Nightclub by transforming its west side pool deck - used during the day as a European-style bathing pool - into an outdoor nightclub.

FBP Group, owned by Frank Heinrich and Bob Athey, were contracted to produce a first-class A/V design and turned to lighting designer Matthew Paupst to design the lighting scheme. "TAO Las Vegas came to FBP Group to produce a world-class outdoor nightclub that was stylish and able to be used for its dual purpose," comments Matthew Paupst. "The main goal was to create an environment that would not be visually obtrusive during the day and at night would morph into a nightclub, entertaining a few thousand people each weekend."

China - The Expo Central China aims to highlight the advantages of Central China, encouraging investors at home and abroad to seek business opportunities. It was held at Zhengzhou International Convention and Exhibition Centre in the Henan Province.

The Expo is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and the local governments of six central Chinese provinces, attracting 30,000 business people, including some 10,000 foreign guests from 100 countries and regions. Singapore - Two Avolites consoles have been supplied to the newly opened Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC) at Singapore's Republic Polytechnic. These were specified by TRCC's assistant director (technical operations),Tony Kam, who is also a lighting designer in his own right.

Republic Polytechnic was established in 2002 and is the fifth and currently the newest post-secondary educational institution in Singapore. It relocated to the new Woodlands campus in the north of the island in 2006, a site designed to serve up to 15,000 students and the local community.

TRCC offers three performance spaces - a 1000 seat theatre/concert hall, a 400 capacity studio and a 120 seat Lab (Black Box).

UK - Projected Image Digital (PID), working closely with architectural lighting design practice Indigo Light Planning, has specified and installed a spectacular Element Labs VersaPIXEL ceiling effect for the house gymnasium of a leading investment bank in London's Canary Wharf area.

PID supplied 1500 25mm square Versa Pixels, a VersaDrive C1 driver and a, Pharos LPC1 architectural lighting controller for the project, which was co-ordinated for them by Sam Douglas.

PID also designed and manufactured custom steel mounting brackets for the VersaPixels which are installed in the room's ceiling panels, and created 17 special clips of digital content, working to a brief from Indigo's Paul Nulty and gym staff.

USA - GE Consumer & Industrial has announced a call for entries for the 25th Annual GE Edison Award competition. Through the competition, GE recognises excellence and quality in professional lighting designs that employ the significant use of GE lamps.

The GE Edison Award competition is open to professional designers, architects, engineers and consultants. Entries are judged on the following criteria: functional excellence; architectural compatibility; effective use of state-of-the-art lighting products and techniques; appropriate color, form and texture revelation; energy effectiveness and cost effectiveness.

Projects scoring the highest number of points will qualify to receive Awards of Merit or Awards of Excellence. The GE Edison Award Winner is selected from among the Awards of Excellence.

UK - Lighting designer Haydn Cruickshank used 28 Robe ColorSpot and ColorWash 700E AT fixtures on leading UK dance act Underworld's Oblivion With Bells recent UK tour.

The fixtures were supplied by Cruickshank's west London based rental company Colour Sound Experiment, which now has over 80 Robe moving lights - all supplied by Robe UK. The 700s were newly purchased this summer for Colour Sound's busy 2007 festival season.

Underworld's lighting rig was based around four trusses - three flown overhead and the fourth ground supported at 5 ft above "floor" height at the rear of stage - and rigged with fixtures that would normally have been scattered across the floor. This was designed to contain the floor lighting and keep the deck area tidy for a 16 large inflatable tubes which joined the visual equation two thirds of the way through the set.

Israel - Similar to the British Pop Idol, Kokhav Nolad (A Star Is Born) is a popular casting show which searches for the most talented young singers in Israel. Starting in 2003 the programme has been broadcast on the Israeli Channel 2. With a big finale Kokhav Nolad 5 recently finished in Golan beach in Tiberias.

For this show the lighting designer Ronen Nagar, stage designer Maya Hanoch and video designer Merlin Group trusted in MA Lighting technology. By using two grandMA full-size, two grandMA video media servers, an MA NSP and an MA 2Port Node they created an extraordinary event.

Belgium - Knokke is considered to be the most exclusive beach resort in Belgium; it certainly does well in attracting the Belgium jet-set. Positioned right at the North Sea beach, the casino - one of Knokke's hot-spots itself - features the recently refurbished Zuri club.

Zuri is a lounge bar with a breathtaking appearance. Interior designer Gerd Couckhuyt created a new dimension inside the venue. Completely coloured in white, the interior makes you imagine being aboard a futuristic spacecraft. As the sun sets, sliding doors and the wall behind the bar will open up allowing the evening to flow into the larger venue of Zuri; effectively transforming from a lounge bar into a trendy nightclub.

UK - Two Avolites Diamond 4 consoles were specified for the 2007 BBC Electric Proms shows staged at London's historic Roundhouse venue. Production lighting for the event was designed by Bryan Leitch and Nick Whitehouse of Visual Light Design, and equipment was supplied by Siyan.

Headliners for this second year included the Kaiser Chiefs, Paul McCartney, Bloc Party, Ray Davies, Mark Ronson and many more.

Whitehouse & Leitch chose the two Diamond 4 Visions as the most flexible control option on the table. They were commissioned to incorporate both stage/live and TV/audience lighting into their very dynamic design. The shows were run by Siyan's team of programmer/operators - Ewan McRobb, Dom Smith and Stu Farrell - all LDs in their own right - working in close consultation with all the headlining band's own LDs.

The Netherlands - The Schouwburg Theatre in the Dutch city of Almere has won the Installation Europe Award 2007 for best auditorium project, with its ETC IES Matrix Mk II SineWave dimming receiving special praise from the judges.

The Schouwburg Almere is a new state of the art multi-venue performing arts centre designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANNA which provides a flexible environment in which to present a diverse array of music, theatre and dance.

With three adaptable spaces receiving incoming shows often only playing for a single night, the theatre has a rigorous schedule, demanding flexibility in technical infrastructure and equipment. To that end, the theatre consultant on the building project, Theater Advies BV, specified ETC IES Matrix Mk II SineWave dimming and ETC Congo lighting consoles throughout the building.

UK - HSL supplied over 80 moving lights and nearly 150 digital lighting fixtures for lighting designer Tom Kinane at the Premier League All Stars tournament. This was staged at the David Beckham Academy in Greenwich, London, broadcast on Sky One and attended by bumper live audiences.

Kinane has worked with HSL on many other shows including the first series of Dancing on Ice, and he once again wanted them on the case providing the show's specialist lighting requirements. The project was handled for HSL by Sean McGlone.

The competition was part of the Premier League's 'Creating Chances' initiative. It united football legends, celebrities and fans in a 7-a-side knock-out contest that saw Middleborough triumph 3-1 over West Ham in the final, in the process winning a £100,000 donation for their favorite charity.
