USA - Element Labs, Inc. (EL), reports that motor manufacturer Saab recently integrated the first white LED Stealth Screen as part of its exhibit at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris. Stealth is one of the new products recently introduced by Element Labs.

The Saab display featured seven screens, consisting of 1200 white Stealth panels (192 square meters), producing "spectacular image quality, resolution, flexibility, transparency and brightness". This media technology was planned, designed, installed and supported by service provider, CT Germany.

USA - Bandit Lites has announced the addition of Airstar lighting balloons to their list of rental equipment. The Airstar balloon is a one-of-a-kind lighting balloon that is made of specially designed materials. The balloon's non-flammable fabrics are a high quality, rip stop material.

Russia - Clay Paky and its distributor for Russia, Doka Media, exhibited from 12 to 15 October at Music Moscow, an annual event dedicated to audio and musical lighting technologies. "This year Doka decided to invest the majority of its resources in our brand, " said Clay Paky sales manager Alberico D'Amato. USA - In a record year for ETC product releases, its Eos lighting control system, which is set to launch in Europe in summer 2007, won the LDI Product of the Year Award for best debuting product in the lighting category. The award praised the new console for its "groundbreaking innovation and functionality".

USA - Element Labs Inc received a 2006 Live Design International Products of the Year award for its new Stealth LED Screen at the LDI 2006 exhibition held in Las Vegas. The award was presented at the Live Design International Awards reception, which was held on Saturday, October 21 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The award recognises the best new equipment in entertainment technology that has been released during the autumn trade show season and is currently shipping. The award is determined by a panel of judges consisting of designers and technicians in their respective fields of lighting, projection, sound, staging, rigging and special effects.

One of the most important producing theatres in the UK, the Young Vic was originally founded in 1970 by Sir Laurence Olivier for the younger members of his newly formed National Theatre Company. Built as a temporary space, it had an intended life span of a mere five years. However it wasn't until 2000 - when the building reached a dangerous state of disrepair - that 'the powers that be' sanctioned its rebuild. The theatre reopened six years later to press on 11 October - on time and on budget.

Italy / India - Announced at the PALA India exhibition in early October, Italian manufacturer LDR has appointed Modern Stage Service as exclusive distributor for its theatrical and architectural lighting products in India, following discussions earlier in the year at PALME in Dubai and at PLASA in London.

The Netherlands - In early September, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships took place at De Smelt (Ice Stadium) in Assen, the Netherlands. After the Paralympics this is the largest worldwide sporting event for the disabled in the world with approximately 1200 athletes from 78 countries competing for 891 medals. The event was broadcast worldwide.

India - Avolites, working with its Indian distributor Jagmag Electric, staged a workshop, seminar and open day in Mumbai for its newly launched Pearl Expert console. This was the first viewing of the Pearl Expert in Asia.

UK - Comedian and actor Eddie Izzard was among the stars performing at the first Secret Policeman's Ball benefit show to be staged for 17 years, the event that raises money for Amnesty International.

For stage lighting, event organisers Flux asked Pete Barnes to design the show. Event Producer, John Farquhar-Smith, wanted someone experienced in both TV and live environments that would create a show that worked in both contexts.

Barnes created a semi circle of 80 PixelLine 1044s at the back of the stage that worked well as background eye-candy both on camera and live. He explains, "The 80 battens were housed in ten customised metal frames, which formed a wrap-around effect that didn't take-up too much stage room. Video content amalgamated with colours and effects were run through the PixelLines."

UK - Visitors to the South Bank of the River Thames over the last few months will have seen a dramatic visual change to the concrete structures of the South Bank arts centre as night fell and a new lighting scheme took over.

Lighting designer Willie Williams - most commonly thought of for his work with U2, but also represented in London's West End and in theatres around the world with the musical We Will Rock You - was asked by the South Bank Centre's creative director Jude Kelly to devise a lighting scheme for the Centre, both to give it its own identity and to ensure that it wasn't overshadowed by the dramatic exterior lighting scheme now in place at its neighbour, the National Theatre.

UK - Leicestershire-based Hawthorns recently provided lighting to the Alton Towers Electric Towers firework spectacular. Lighting designer and the park's technical manager Simon Horsley specified City Colours, Alpha Spot and Washes and Martin Atomic Strobes. Hawthorns were using, for the first time, their new TowAir inflatable clear domes to protect the moving lights from the elements.

Thirty of the strobes gave lightning effects to the Towers during the 20-minute spectacle. In addition three 200a three phase lightning strikes were suspended in and around the towers to light up the sky. A row of Alpha 575's along the lakeside raised up on decking allowed Horsley to create some stunning effects bouncing light off the water.

In addition to the lighting, Hawthorns also created two 5m x 5m ground support Prolyte truss boxes to contain two HVFX tesla coils.

USA - Robe's brand new StageQube 324 LED wall has won one of the LDI 2006 Debuting Product Awards in the projection category. The product was launched in September at the PLASA Show, and LDI saw it revealed to the American Market for the first time.

The LDI judges praised the StageQube 324 for its innovative engineering, integrating structural support into each display module. They were impressed with how easily and quickly the system was to set up and maintain by replacing any panel anywhere without taking the system apart.

UK - Stagecraft reports a healthy increase in sales for its hire department during summer 2006. The combination of a prolonged summer of fine, dry weather and an increase in the number of outdoor performances and festivals has resulted in an abundance of new opportunities for the Salisbury-based company.
