UK - Architectural lighting specialist LTP has commissioned and programmed 130 Color Kinetics iColor Cove EC fixtures for the Twilight Zone at The Deep in Hull - the world's only submarium. The Twilight Zone is a newly opened £6.8m exhibition within The Deep, exploring the life forms found beneath the sunlit zone of the ocean. Highlights include giant Japanese Spider crabs, Pacific octopus, wolf eels and the other-worldly Nautilus.

Lighting for The Twilight zone was designed by DHA's Peter Fordham. He also created the original lighting design for the popular attraction when it opened in 2002, in which LTP was also involved in the supply. Once again, he approached LTP's Terry Reeves to commission and programme the Color Kinetics fixtures once they had been specified and installed.

Dark blues, purples and rich UV hues are the predominant colours in the Twilight Zone. It was imp

UK - London's QEII Conference Centre, situated directly opposite Westminster Abbey, has undergone a striking application of Colour to its building exterior. To achieve this, the QEII management have embraced the latest developments in LED fixture technology by the integration of Pulsar ChromaFlood200 fixtures into their exterior lighting scheme.

A total of fourteen high-power RGB (Red-Green-Blue) CFLD200 fixtures provide stunning changing colour to the building facade with a maximum power requirement of only 2,500 watts, a figure that is reduced to about 1,250 watts for most of the programmed scenes.

Control is provided by a Pulsar Masterpiece Replay Unit that performs the pre-programmed scenes that are then transmitted by DMX to the fixtures in real time.

QEII production manager, Derek Chalmers who conceived and implemented the project commented, "This is an amazing st

UK - A.C. Lighting will be showing extensions to the Jands Vista and Chroma-Q Color Block product ranges plus a selection of products from its stockholding of leading technical theatre brands at ABTT.

The Color Block accessories range now features new Color Block pixel cap and 30-way power supply products, making the multi-purpose LED fixture suitable for a wider range of effects lighting applications.

The pixel cap is designed for applications under studio lighting conditions, where lens flare can appear on the TV camera image as a result of shooting into a bright light source. Designed to fit over individual RGB LED cells on the front of units, the cap blends together the RGB to show only the resulting colour, and because the light output is diffused, eliminates camera lens flare. Pixel caps can be used on all or any of the Color Block's 4 separate cells.

The 30-way PSU is

UK - The new MAC 700 from Martin Professional will be on preview at this week's ABTT show. This fixture is ideally suited to the theatre market, say Martin, as its features include an Animation Wheel, CMY and the option to run in Quiet Mode. Also on show is the newly released MAC 250 Wash, as well as the new Woodroffe Gobo Collection for the MAC 2000 Profile. Martin says it will also be giving two lucky people the chance to win one of its Mania Aqua and Fire Animation Effects at the show.

UK - James Thomas's Pixel team continues its collaboration with ground-breaking light-sound-video based atmospheric engineers, United Visual Artists, supplying equipment for UVA's recent performance at London's Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) - part of the ICA's onedotzero season of electronic arts. UVA staged their own newly developed music and visual show at the ICA to a packed audience. The show was created in collaboration with two major technical associates James Thomas Engineering/Pixel range and Creative Technology.

The ICA show is the latest in a long and inventive list of projects to fuse the imaginative talents and enthusiasm of the Pixel team and UVA. It follows work on Massive Attack's 2004 festival tour which featured a horizontal wall of Pixelline used as a giant low-res LED surface - driven by UVA's latest Dragonfly control software.

UK - Bandit Lites is supplying lighting production for System Of A Down's Mesmerise world tour which kicked off in Europe this month. System - among the loudest and most energetic exponents of the US nu-metal generation - is being LD'd by Joe Paradise. The account is being handled by Lester Cobrin from the Bandit UK office, who says, "One of the most anticipated tours has finally arrived. This is big, bold and mega bright... in fact, enough to make your eyes bleed!"

Paradise was initially approached after working with production manager Eddie Kercher on Incubus last year. He decided to create a 'Great wall of lights' effect for the show - which currently carries no video, so the main visual element, other than the band - is lighting. His primary objective is to match the intense, raw sonic impact of the band with lighting semantics.

UK - Robe Show Lighting has launched its latest moving light - the ColorWash 250 AT. This completes Robe's AT line of fixtures, which now offers moving heads in 1200W, 575W and 250W models, in both spot and wash versions.

The 250 AT is billed as "ideal for television, theatrical and architectural applications where quietness is vital. It's also suitable for clubs, discos, installations and scenic lighting of all types, where expedient sizing, reliability, and cool design top the agenda." It features a new optical system, making it 50% brighter than its predecessor, the Wash 250XT.

Says Robe, "The extremely silent cooling system and movement make ColorWash 250 AT an ideal choice for TV and theatre. Even with the strobing function activated, the fixture's operation is virtually inaudible.

As with all other Robe AT moving heads, ColorWash 250 AT features full 16-

UK - Stage Electrics is promoting new products from Prolyte, Apollo, Teclumen plus its own brand Encore at this week's ABTT show.

In March 2005 Stage Electrics was appointed UK distributor for Prolyte trussing, Stage Dex Staging and Prolyft chain hoists. Both Prolyte H30 and X30 trusses are light to medium duty and offer strength flexibility and compactness.

"The relationship with Prolyte has been a natural development for Stage Electrics. We have made a large investment in inventory but the wide range of products they offer and the quality of their manufacturing meant that it was an easy choice to make." said Adam Blaxill, head of purchasing at Stage Electrics.

Ed Gamble Business development manager Ed Gamble adds, "Customers have been extremely receptive to the Prolyte range, both the durability and the design features of the products make them intuitive to

UK - Cambridgeshire based 5 Star Cases Limited have recently invested in 3D modelling software by Solid Edge. The Wisbech company, purchased the software from Cutting Edge Solutions Limited of Witney - Oxfordshire, having evaluated various other systems on the market. 5 Star is one of Europe's leading specialist case manufacturers and supplies some of the biggest names in the Entertainment and Audio Visual sectors as well as many blue chip companies including Alstom Energy, Martin Audio, Lighthouse and Rolls Royce.

CES, UK's leading supplier of the renowned Solid Edge from UGS had previously demonstrated the system at a 'Customer Day' back in 2003. Although 5 Star Cases had been using 2D drafting for a number of years, the move to 3D modelling was considered just prior to the demo at UGS.

Greece - PRG Europe was at the heart of one of the highlights of the Greek entertainment calendar when the company supplied lighting design and management expertise to the opening ceremony of the Hellenic Festival in Athens. Running from 20 May to 9 October, this year's events are even higher profile than normal, because the festival is celebrating both its 50th year and the 50th anniversary of the first film to be produced in Greece. Celebrating twin golden jubilees meant that something extra special was required for this year's opening ceremony.

Lighting director Mike Odam's task was to give a spectacular look to the opening ceremony and first performance of the festival, which featured a 60-piece symphony orchestra, 40 piece choir and live 'electric' musicians. Overcoming a range of challenges, Mike and PRG Europe put on a show fit for the high-ranking dignitaries and extensi

UAE - During the PALME exhibition in Dubai, L&SI was invited to visit the premises of Production Technology LLC - better known as Protec. Protec is a world class event production company and the region's largest supplier of sound, lighting, AV, hydraulic and motor control equipment.

The latter elements are a particular area of Protec's strength, as a tour around its facilities reveals. Everywhere are the remnants of large-scale motorized set pieces, waiting to be called upon. There are set pieces purchased from the selling off of the Millennium Dome's contents; there are large, customized, articulated truss sections, huge spheres and steel and aluminium forms of all kinds of construction; it's like a giant's Meccano kit, with lots of bits that you can't get from the shops. There's enormous potential for creativity here.

Protec is owned by Stephen Lakin, the industry veteran wh

Avolites is another company with a history in the region. Tony Shembish has been out here for several years, running Avolites Middle East & North Africa, based in Abu Dhabi, and business is booming. With one of the larger stands at the exhibition, and with good support from familiar Avo faces from the UK, Avo ME was also playing host to James Thomas Engineering's Pixelline range of LED fixtures, which played a central role on the stand; Avo ME was appointed the official Middle East distributor for the range at the show. Tony Cameron, European sales manager for PixelRange, said: "The response to PixelDrive and PixelRange was phenomenal, much more than I had forecast. This show has guaranteed us big business in the Middle East, not just in Dubai but many of the surrounding territories as far as Pakistan."

Australia - The popular Dreamland Karaoke Restaurant in Perth, Australia, recently upgraded both its lighting and audio equipment, which posed a problem; the venue is small and there was not enough room to install the extra power needed to spruce up the venue. The electrician looked at the cost and space required to install a new switchboard, which would also need dimmer circuits, and decided it was not a viable option. Fortunately, Andrew Newnham of Total Production Systems had recently seen the new EKO wall-mount installation dimmer from LSC Lighting and he suggested that this small, single-unit dimmer; with built-in RCD protection was all that would be required.

The EKO incorporates a cleverly designed installation frame that can be fixed in position without the dimmer being present. Load and control screw terminals on the frame allow for building wiring to be terminated in a

Money raised at the events will help raise awareness of The Trussell Trust Food Bank, a community-based project which provides emergency food to people in short term crisis. Food given to The Food Bank by

UK - Entec Lighting continues its successful run of theatre productions, supplying lighting equipment for the national tour of Kim Gavin's Love Shack. The show stars Faye Tozer and Jon Lee (ex S-Club 7), Noel Sullivan (ex Hear'Say) and a lively collection of hits from the 1980s. Entec won the contract by offering an excellent package, and was also highly recommended by lighting designer Simon Tutchener to producer Tristan Baker. The show was programmed by Nigel Catmur, and Jeremy Duncan was asked onboard to operate on tour, and to oversee the re-lights.

Love Shack visits all the major receiving houses in the country. The schedule is tight, with a Monday morning get-in to be ready for a show that evening, followed by a full week of shows and a get out after curtain down on the Saturday. Entec's Noreen O'Riordan says: "Theatre is a relatively new discipline to u

UK - Studio Due architectural fixtures and Robe moving lights and control were specified and installed by Glasgow-based SSUK for a new permanent lighting scheme at the Falkirk Wheel. The Wheel - an iconic fusion of industrial art and engineering innovation - is the world's first and only rotating boat lift. It links two canals with water levels 115ft apart, a feat traditionally requiring 11 locks.

Designed by Scottish architects RMJM and completed in 2001, the Falkirk Wheel is the centrepiece of the £84.5m 'Millennium Link', the UK's largest canal restoration project, developed by British Waterways to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, re-establishing access from the east to west coast of Scotland.

SSUK was asked by British Waterways to come up with an eye-catching scheme to light the wheel. With the adjacent visitor centre also hired out for corporate fu

Martin Professional Middle East's CEO, Nour Assafiri, said business was excellent for his company, which has been operating since 1991, and as Martin Pro Middle East since 2002. USA - Color Kinetics Inc has announced the broad installation of its intelliWhite technology in a multiple store roll-out for Bostonian, the specialty men's footwear brand owned by Clarks Companies, NA. Bostonian and its sister brand Clarks operate a network of retail stores nationwide, at least 15 of which will apply iW Profile to light their display shelving.

This system was chosen as a low-maintenance and long-lasting alternative to Bostonian's existing fluorescent display lights, which required costly and frequent replacement. The retailer will design custom display fixtures that incorporate iW Profile to downlight each shelf. iW Profile also allows for different Kelvin temperatures to be set according to display location, for example, cooler shades of white for displays near store windows, and warmer shades towards the store's interior.

Representing Pulsar in the Middle East for some time now is the well-known face of John Lethbridge, exhibiting on the stand of NMK, the company's UAE distributor. Lethbridge reported a big gain in momentum in the regional market since Pulsar's first PALME show in 2003, with particularly good growth in Saudi. Pulsar has exclusive distribution in Kuwait, and recently sealed distribution in Qatar. Also on the NMK stand, it was good to catch up with Roy Millington of Cloud Electronics - one of the many pro audio brands represented by the distributor.

Germany - Since 1943, when Walter Oehmichen and his wife Rose built a "puppet shrine" with their daughters and developed their first tiny puppet show for family and friends, the Augsburger Puppet Box has been the best-known marionette theatre in Germany. Germans young and old have an attachment to the puppets that is beyond nostalgia. Every year the theatre gives 440 performances, 98% of the time sold out, plus tours, guest appearances, and TV and film productions.

To keep up with this intense production rate, the Puppet Box must be able to depend on its technical systems, and Klaus Marschall, grandchild of the founder and now the owner of the theatre, is playing it safe with his lighting, choosing to install an ETC SmartFade 2496 as a DMX backup control console. The Augsburger puppeteers have long relied on their older Transtechnik T20 desk as their main console, with

Europe / USA - A.C. Lighting supplied a Jands Vista lighting console to Lite Alternative to control the largely Martin Pro rig for Keane's 2005 European and US tour.

Following a successful 2004 UK tour and the critical and commercial success of the band's debut album, Hopes and Fears, Keane extended its tour with a series of European and US dates throughout 2005. With extra production budget available for US shows, which were taking place in venues up to twice the capacity of the European dates, LD Paul Normandale decided to step up the production values for the US leg.

Having read about the Jands Vista lighting console's Generic Fixture Model, Normandale was keen to see if it could provide a solution to the lengthy process of re-plotting shows for varying venue sizes. After a demo from Jands' European and North American distributor A.C. Lighting, Normandale was impressed by t

UK - Ice*lighting, the "super batten" from Telectra, was awarded the ABTT (Associaton of British Theatre Technicians), lighting product of the year 2005 at the ABTT Annual Awards Dinner held at the Duke of York's Headquarters, London on Wednesday 15 June.

Transferring innovative technology advances developed outside the entertainment industry, ice*lighting provides eye-catching visual entertainment effects through LED (light emitting diode) and proprietary Bead*light Technologies, as well as converging light and video technologies to provide wide area video effects across split batten arrays without the use of a media server.

"The real point about product development," says Alan Oliver, Telectra's sales and marketing director, "is that technology innovation must exceed customer needs and expectations and in the world of entertainment, lighting and disp
