UK - With a loyal fan base in the UK eager to see their favourite wrestler vie for ring dominance, American professional wrestling organization TNA Wrestling travelled to England earlier in the year for a series of arena shows dubbed the Maximum Impact 8 Tour. Elation Professional lighting fixtures have been staples on TNA Wrestling events in the UK recently with this year's lighting package predominately made up of Elation Platinum Beam 5R Extreme and Platinum Wash ZFX Pro moving heads.

This year's shows, which included an extra layer of emotion as they marked wrestling legend Kurt Angle's final bouts, were designed by Emmy Award-winning LD Jeff Bornstein with Ian Livie, whose production company has provided entertainment technology for TNA's UK shows for years, assisting with the design elements. Lighting operation was by Andre Huff.

USA - Four years after masterminding the set design for Blake Shelton's first major tour, creative director Steve Cohen has been brought in again to unite lighting and video into a fluid stage set redolent of the artist's Oklahoma roots.

And once again he has dipped heavily into the LED catalogue of GLP to fulfill his requirements, sourcing over 200 of the German company's X4 Series fixtures from his regular vendor, Beame (formerly Atomic Lighting).

The set features 116 impression X4 along with 32 of the large X4 L (37 x 15W RGBW LEDs), punctuated by 60 of the tiny single source X4 Atoms.

The itinerary consists entirely of full size sports arenas, with a few country fairs built in. And with demand for tickets so high, the artist's manager, Narvel Blackstock, wanted to sell every arena seat possible, including those behind the stage Asked to produce "something cool" by

UK - Making the audience the focus of attention turns the usual aspect of arena events on its head, but then there was nothing 'usual' about WE Day at the SSE Arena, Wembley on 9 March. WE Day is an inspirational event, fusing the energy and enthusiasm of young people - in the words of the organizations' website - "to empower a new generation to shift the world from 'me' to 'we' - from a focus on the individual to the power of the community."

And it's that audience focus which immediately validates such noble sentiments as Jason McKinnon, who designs the event in collaboration with executive producer Lina Beaudin explained. "It is a pretty amazing event. The audience can't buy tickets; they earn their way into the arena by taking action on social issues that are important to them."

To put that in context, the young people that attended earned their place through participat

France - Robe BMFL Spot moving lights have been specified for France's Arlette Gruss Circus show which started its 2016 winter tour at the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux.

Since 2009, the show has been staged in the 1500 seater 'Cathedral' tent venue, an impressive structure that features eight masts and is 83m long by 49m wide with 20m of headroom.

With those dimensions, they needed a spot fixture with some serious brightness. They also wanted a unit that was flexible and properly multi-purpose.

The 11 x BMFL Spots - replacing older 1500W series moving lights from another manufacturer - were delivered by leading French rental company Dushow after being chosen for the lighting rig by circus lighting designer Arthur Oudin.

Dushow has enjoyed a productive long term relationship with the circus as a technical supplier.

USA - After receiving much interest during its official European tradeshow launch in Frankfurt, Chroma-Q has announced the North American launch at NAB of their new Space Force LED fixture - the next frontier in space lighting - which is shipping now.

The Space Force is a variable white LED space light that is a modern replacement for conventional space lights or soft light sources commonly used in film and TV studios around the world.

The fixture benefits from cool running, energy efficiency, lightweight design and minimum maintenance.

The Space Force is highly efficient and natively single source, removing the need for skirts or silks to diffuse the light.

As a result of its low profile, lightweight (only 8kg / 17.6lb) and skirt-free design, the fixture is quick and easy to set up at any height.

The Space Force is available as a variable white source, CCT tun

USA - Colour-changing LED luminaires are a fact of life in today's lighting industry, but intelligent lights require intelligent control. When time and money are tight, the results aren't always pretty; small venues around the world have experienced a rash of purplish light, poor colour rendering and garish transitions.

Since 2014, ETC's ColorSource family of products has fought back against this epidemic of bad LED lighting by providing affordable, high-quality luminaires and effortless power control. Now, with the announcement of the new ColorSource and ColorSource AV control desks, the family is poised to really take control of the issue - one venue at a time.

Approachability is key for a small console; many venues are staffed by students, volunteers or visiting artists, and operators need to be able to walk up to a board, learn it quickly and bring up great lighting lo

UK - Plenty of excitement surrounded the high profile re-launch of Virgin Radio on the DAB digital radio platform, with an exceptionally strong presentation team, a great music and entertainment policy and all the ingredients to repeat the ratings success it enjoyed in the nineties and noughties.

Event technical production specialist Maestra London was asked by live event and TV producers TBI Media to provide creative lighting for the inaugural broadcast which took place aboard a Virgin train running from Manchester to London. It was hosted by Virgin Radio presenters Edith Bowman and Matt Richardson complete with special live sets from a number of bands including The Feeling, Travis, Mystery Jets, Walking on Cars and Gavin James.

UK - The UK premiere of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was big news throughout Europe. Setting an appropriately grand tone for this A-list event at London's Leicester Square, Impact Production Services, created the highest profile video installation in the company's history using a collection of PVP X6IP LED panels and pixel mapped ÉPIX Strip Tour LED fixtures from Chauvet Professional.

Anchoring the dramatic design by IPS client Limited Edition Event Design was a massive video wall display. Lining the red carpet, the display was made of 14 individual 2m x 2m x 5m high Layher towers positioned in zig-zag formation; each tower sporting a 1.5m wide by 2.5m high matrix of Chauvet PVP X6IP panels. The panels displayed visual content and pictures of the various comic book figures in the film, in addition to Batman and Superman lettering.

USA - Known for his ability to "routinely fill stadiums" (Las Vegas Sun), this year's ACM Entertainer of the Year Jason Aldean is having an incredible year, and it is only April. The multi-Platinum country music megastar will return to the road as his Six String Circus tour launches 19 May in Rogers, AR with a lighting package provided by longtime vendor Bandit Lites.

Stand out elements of Mike Swinford's lighting design include the massive MagicRing-R9 fixtures, MagicBlade-R and pods comprising of MagicDot-R's. Bandit recently added a massive quantity of these Ayrton fixtures to its touring inventory, fixtures that Swinford praises for their consistent output and precision. "I find them appealing because they are on the cutting edge of LED creative technology," said Swinford. "This gives us a fresh new approach to the design and a look that we had never been able to

UK - A bright sunny April day saw the 6th Annual Behind the Scenes UK Charity Golf Day kick off in normal chaotic style. The morning started with all 20 teams having to pass the BTS Golf Academy before being let loose on a proper golf course with real balls. The teams had to negotiate the four crazy golf putt putt holes, swiftly followed by the driving range and 'nearest to the pin' challenge. This being a BTS Golf Day the challenges are never normal and these tasks involved the golf balls being replaced for marshmallows. Surprisingly some of the golfers chose to keep using the marshmallows on the main 18 holes as their game suddenly improved with straighter and longer shots!

A networking lunch was rounded off with final instruction from BTS Golf Day judge, jury and executioner, Lee Dennison. The teams departed to their holes and the game was afoot. Never one to let people enj

UK / USA - "We really can't tell you how this saved our home and family." "For everybody who contributes to Behind the Scenes, thank you. You helped save my life." "I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and generosity at a time in my life when I needed it the most."

Without the help of Behind the Scenes, these people - and many more - would have been in real financial difficulties as a result of illness or injury. By Design Day, a major fundraiser for the charity, is being held this year on Saturday, 23 April. It is the day for members of the design community to make a personal donation, hold a collection at work or support the day by giving a day's royalties.

Raising money for Behind the Scenes in both North America and the UK, By Design Day returns this year supported by a galaxy of well-known champions. Neil Austin, Ken Billington, Paule Constable, R

Germany - Hamburg dance / trance trio Scooter - considered the most successful German singles recording act with 23 top 10 hits and over 30m records sold - kicked off their 2016 tour with an eye-catching lighting and set design by Jerry Appelt, one of the best known lighting and visual professionals in Germany.

Twenty-two of Robe's new LED strobes were right at the heart of the design which is being looked after on the road by lighting director / associate designer Marc Brunk Hardt.

The design's architecture is formed from five raked pods flown above the stage and loaded with lights. The idea of this 'roof' can be altered and adapted to fit into different sized venues on the tour - with capacities of between 2000 and 12000 - whilst retaining the basic depth and integrity of the design. It's also a great solution for dealing with varying headroom - looking equally good with

Featuring the new 280W Philips MSD Platinum 14R lamp and emitting an ultra-narrow 2.5° beam, the Sniper PRO is capable of producing the same precise beam and laser like effects as its successful predecessor but now with three times the brightness.

"We met with a lot of success with the original Sniper when it launched in 2014, but we also had some customers tell us they wanted more power and more color choice," said Elation Professional sales director Eric Loader. "So we increased the lamp from 132 watts to 280 watts and upgraded with CMY and more effects to give designers the chance t

USA - Rising American country music star Canaan Smith has been touring with Robe Pointes and LEDWash 600s, specified by lighting designer Sooner Routhier, whose objective was to create a fresh and vibrant look for each show on the first US leg of the artist's 'Stompin' Grounds' tour, also his first full headlining venture.

Visiting a variety of different sized venues, Sooner's starting point for the design was a series of corrugated, metal, graffiti art pieces in set carts which are positioned onstage. These were inspired by artwork that Canaan had created on his smartphone, bringing a real personal touch to the performance space.

The 12 x Pointes and eight LEDWash 600s were also rigged on the set carts and in various other positions on the floor and overhead trusses to get a good mix of focus positions.

Pointes were chosen because they are a small beam / profile lumin

But perhaps the biggest scene-stealer was the Dalis LED cyclorama light which brought with it some exciting new developments to the technology that took the show by storm in 2015. In addition to the award-winning Dalis 860 Cyclight, which has been flying off the shelves since last year, Robert Juliat also unveiled a new Dalis footlight batten and a Dalis wash light.
