France - State Automation dimming and network products will be installed this summer by INEO Media System for a new permanent dimming system at the Grande Halle - the iconic building inside the premier urban cultural park, Parc de la Villette.

Built in 1867 by Jules de Merindol as the old oxen market, and was entirely transformed in 1982 by the architects Bernard Reichen and Philippe Robert to become the place for all sorts of events from theatre shows, creative exhibitions to cultural activities of concert, balls, dances, photo expos and films. The Grande Halle, is undoubtedly the main treasure of the park for its unique identity of "where the most diverse people cross one another."

State Automation was the pioneer in developing the sinewave technology in 1995, won the PLASA Award in 1998 and had the world's first SineWave installation at Sydney Opera House in 1999.

UK - Leading staging company Stagecraft Theatre Services recently completed the design and installation of a new theatre system at the award-winning Mossbourne Academy in London. Mossbourne, which recently won the RIBA Award for Design Excellence, is one of the new flag-ship community academy schools in London, opened by Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2005.

"Working with the team at Mossbourne, we have created a lighting and sound system which is equal to that of many professional theatres. The lighting is rigged onto a flown truss to give the school complete flexibility and we have installed a variety of lanterns to ensure that every angle of the stage is covered. Likewise, the sound system includes sound desks which give direct access and control of the CD/DVD players, the mics and radio mics, to allow students to move around the theatre without losing sound quality,"

USA - The Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, is one of the largest churches in New York. Built on an eleven-acre campus that includes a café and book store, prayer centre, gardens and restaurants in addition to the worship centre, conference facilities and a preparatory school, CCC now has a congregation of more than 25,000 with another 300,000 tuning in to hear CCC's senior pastor and founder, Reverend A. R. Bernard, on New York's Christian radio station, WMCA-AM. In fact, Rev. Bernard was recently cited as one of the most influential men in New York by New York Magazine.

Ireland - Far up on the craggy, northernmost coast of the Republic of Ireland lies a small and pretty village with two treasures it can call its own. Culdaff (pop. 200), in Inishowen, County Donegal, boasts both one of Europe's top-rated Blue Flag beaches, a perfect golden strand, and, these past few years, one of the island of Ireland's most enterprising live music ventures, the Backroom at McGrory's.

USA / UK - Theatre Projects Consultants has announced that leadership and ownership of the firm has been transferred to a new generation of leaders. "For the past few years, we have been planning this ownership transition of the UK and US companies to the younger members of our team, and we feel that now is the right time for that change," said Richard Pilbrow, founder and chairman.

UK - In an impressive bid to deliver inclusive and accessible theatre, the new Leicester Performing Arts Centre will reveal its stage and backstage areas to the street outside. The new venue, under construction in the heart of Leicester City, is part of the overall plan to revitalise and regenerate the city centre and will become a symbolic landmark for cultural industries in the East Midlands. The innovative, glass building will allow people to see inside the building from the outside including backstage activities such as sets being built.

The centre will include two auditoria, totalling 1,000 seats, and will be fitted with the latest theatre technologies, including complete automated power flying from Stage Technologies. The system will include BigTow winches and a MaxisID control system operated by Nomad control consoles.

Spain - Projected Image Digital has supplied, installed and commissioned 60 Element Labs VersaTube LED fixtures in a stunning basement bar lighting scheme at the Hard Rock Café in Barcelona.

This follows on from PID's work with Paula Reason of Cadmium Design and Steve Inwood, Hard Rock International's director of European Development at the Hard Rock Café in London. Here they supplied a customised VersaTile installation for the back wall of the basement bar.

USA - Bowling Green State University's Doyt L. Perry Stadium celebrated its 40th anniversary with a newly renovated scoreboard and sound system. Remarkably, the 28,000-plus park is now amply covered by only five Community R6-51 loudspeakers, all hidden behind a mesh screen in the new scoreboard.

The new system was installed by Torrence Sound of Perrysburg, Ohio, who also provided EASE modelling and consultation for Toledo-based JDRM Engineering, who designed and engineered the fibre-optic based system.

A single Community R6 in the centre fires down to the far end of the field, with two more on either side covering the left and right seating areas.

Crown CTs3000 amplifiers, monitored and controlled via their IQ network, power the system from a single weatherproof enclosure under the scoreboard, and a Media Matrix system provides deep control over routing and signal processing

UK - Blackburn-based installer Romers Electronics has carried out AV installations at two local premiership football clubs - Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic - selecting Allen & Heath's iDR DSP system for both projects.

Earlier this year, Romers was tasked with refitting the executive areas of Ewood Park's Jack Walker stand, part of Blackburn Rovers' 31,000-capacity stadium. The three suites needed a new audio distribution system to provide more flexibility and control of the various sources for match day hospitality events and private functions. Each suite required access to local sources - a music source, radio, and wired mic inputs - and access to network-based global sources, comprising Rovervision, the Club's in-house TV Company; Radio Rovers, the match day radio station; and Atmosphere, a system that transmits the crowd and pitch noise into the suites.

South Africa - UK cable specialist VDC Trading has supplied a range of high quality cables to South African audio distribution company Surgesound for installation into Sequoais, a new bar that is designed to bring the ultimate "mixology" and dining experience to Johannesburg.

Sequoias (pronounced Se-koi-as), which opened its doors to the public at the end of May, features a bar counter made of solid ice, a spectacular view of the city and a bar and cocktail menu designed by two of the best 'mixologists' and cocktail flairers in the world. Christian Delpech, 15 times world flair champion and World Champion mixologist Toby Ellis, both from Las Vegas, were brought to South Africa specifically to help design the menu and to train Sequoias' barmen in flair, mixology and technical bartending.

The massive job of converting the site of the heritage-listed old town hall fell to Kane Constructions, who through the design of William Ross Architects and Denis Irving of theatrical consultants Entertech, combined the traditional façade of the old town hall, with a modern, practical and visually appealing theatrical space. USA - Starting from humble roots in a Montgomery, Frazer United Methodist Church has served its growing congregation for over a century. By 1990, Frazer had the largest worship attendance of any United Methodist church in the U.S., enough that seven services are held every Sunday. To accommodate its large and active congregation, Frazer constructed the new 2,000 seat Wesley Hall worship centre.

Frazer's front-of-house engineer, Steve Wolfe wanted to be sure the church selected loudspeakers offering both high intelligibility and musicality. Working with project manager Brian Smith of the Whitlock Group, a listening session with two candidate loudspeakers was set up to help determine their best choice.

USA - The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) began its 71st season at its three-theatre location in Ashland, Oregon operating in true rotating rep, meaning a different show plays each afternoon and evening; 11 plays are currently rotating at the 360-seat Black Box New Theatre, the 600-seat Angus Bowmer Theatre, and the 1200-seat outdoor Elizabethan Theatre.

Michael Maag, master electrician for OSF, orchestrates an impressive routine to light these performances, with around two-and-a-half hours between curtain down on one show and house open on the next. The lighting crew changes colour, gobos, and shutter cuts on the rep lights in each theatre. With such a demanding schedule, there are very specific requirements. Spain - A new nightclub, Mission 439 has opens its doors to the Guipuzcoan night life. The locale has become the top showcase for DJs wanting to promote their work in the Basque country. Located in the city of Irura, each Friday and Saturday night it draws clubbers from as far away as France to see the latest national and international DJs.

The sound for the club disco has been installed by sound and lighting company Audio Skan based in Guipúzcoa and headed by Santiago García Bou who designed both lighting and sound. The audio system is made up of eight D.A.S. Audio Reference series RF-215 systems reinforced by eight Sub-218 for the low frequencies powered by external amplifiers.

UK - Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College (BCUC) has teamed up with a new entertainment industry partner to add value to its successful BA (Hons) degree course in Music Industry Management and Live Production - Shuttlesound, the UK distribution subsidiary of the Telex EVI Group.

The BCUC has purchased a substantial sound reinforcement system from Shuttlesound, featuring a Dynacord XA2 loudspeaker system, with Electro-Voice ZX4 floor monitors, powered by EV's CP2200 amplifiers. There is a 32-track Midas Verona mixing console at front-of-house and a 24-track Siena on monitors, and the outboard pack includes Klark-Teknik DN370, DN504 and DN514 audio processing units. Shuttlesound has also supplied a complete inventory of Electro-Voice microphones, including N/D767s and RE200s.

Austria - Situated in the midst of the picture-book Austrian Tirol is Walchsee, where the five star Hotel Seehof recently underwent a complete audio upgrade. Independently run by the Münsterer family, the requirement was for an audio system which offered simple and flexible functionality - requirements which have been met with a combination of QSC loudspeakers and amplification.

Where the need for flexibility was particularly manifest was in the hotel's seminar area. This space is used alternatively as a single, large hall, or divided with a mobile partition wall as two smaller seminar rooms for presentations. With a single button push, each configuration can be adapted and audio optimised for speech intelligibility as necessary, with the DSP controlling eight QSC AD-S52 speakers and a QSC CX254 4-channel power amp.

Hawthorn's installation team specified 20 Prolyft motors and over 120m of Prolyte S36R truss, along with motor controllers and cabling.

The Netherlands - Allen & Heath's Dutch distributor, TM Audio, recently completed a huge audio installation in a new multi-function venue, installing a variety of Allen & Heath products to manage all the sound requirements, from mixing consoles to audio distribution and processing.

Situated in Purmerend near Amsterdam, the new venue, P3, was commissioned to host a variety of international and national cultural events, including music concerts, theatre, and dance performances, as well as provide facilities for rehearsals.

Australia - When designing sound reinforcement systems for churches, there are two priorities that are of equal importance: high intelligibility and aesthetic unobtrusiveness. The latter is especially true in historic church buildings, where the architecture is often extremely valuable.

Sydney-based church specialist Clare Communications has good experience at designing such installations and takes full advantage of Turbosound's TCS and Impact series, which the company says combine high quality acoustics with a small, discreet enclosure and are specifically designed to fulfil the twin requirements.

Clare has recently worked with Matt Donovan from Audio Telex, Turbosound's Australian distributor, to design and install new systems into two very different Catholic churches in Australia - the Mosman church in Sydney and St Aloysius Catholic church in Cronulla.

UK - The PLASA Show (Earls Court, London, 10-13 September 2006) is now welcoming nominations for the popular PLASA Awards for Innovation, which will once again form a major attraction at the event this year. At last year's show, no less than 68 nominated products covering various product areas within lighting, audio, staging and AV, were displayed on the Innovation Gallery, which is sponsored by Lighting&Sound International magazine and situated right at the entrance to Earls Court's ground floor.

Judged on the grounds of their 'Innovation' alone, the nominated products are closely assessed by a panel of expert industry practitioners, chaired by L&SI magazine's Technical Editor, James Eade.
