UK - Ready Steady Light is a lighting competition with around 18 teams of lighting professionals who will have three hours to design and set up a temporary lighting installation in the grounds of Rose Bruford College. The event will be presented at Rose Bruford College on 19 March this year.

The event is run by the students who are studying on the College's BA (Hons) Lighting Design and BA (Hons) Stage Management and provides a platform to develop key relationships with industry professionals.

At Rose Bruford College there are many different areas for the competition such as woodland, new glass buildings and also more traditional architecture to challenge the teams and the public are welcome to view the installations between 6-8pm. UK - PLASA London launches its first show at ExCeL London today with free entry for the first 5000 people to register via its new website. Taking place on 6-9 October 2013, the new name, new venue, and new autumn dateline aren't the only changes afoot for the industry-owned event.

PLASA CEO Matthew Griffiths explains, "This year marks the first stage of the show's long-term strategic development. Japan - Audio-Technica has announced the passing of company founder and executive emeritus of Audio-Technica Corporation, Hideo Matsushita, on 5 March, 2013.

Hideo Matsushita passed away of natural causes at the age of 93. In accordance with his family's wishes, a private wake and funeral service were held on 8-9 March.

On the eve of Audio-Technica's 40th anniversary in 2002, Hideo Matsushita reflected on the company's early beginnings: "I came to Tokyo at age 32, and, thanks to an introduction by my uncle, went to work for the Bridgestone Museum of Art. At the urging of the museum's director, I began organizing LP concerts. These were much more successful than anyone imagined. After a decade at the Bridgestone Museum, I struck out on my own and established Audio-Technica in 1962."

Regional Support Plea - BECTU general secretary Gerry Morrissey has called on the West End to "give more support to regional counterparts", in a bid to prevent theatres closing as a result of cuts. The backstage union's head also called on local council funding for the arts to be a "statutory obligation rather than an optional extra". His plea comes as councils around the UK slash their arts budget, which is resulting in less funding for many regional theatres.

Earlier this month, Sheffield Theatres was hit with a £106,000 cut to its £529,000 grant from Sheffield City Council, while Stoke-on-Trent City Council has said it will reduce its annual grant of £67,500 to Staffordshire's New Vic by £23,000 in the next financial year. UK - Friday 15th March saw the second instalment of the PLASA Golf Day charity event at the Drift Golf Club in Surrey. Following on from the success of last year's competition, the fundraiser was held to raise money for Light Relief - a charity established by and for those working in the entertainment industry who are experiencing times of difficulty and extreme hardship. The event was organised by PLASA with assistance from Delta Sound and White Light. The event raised a praiseworthy £4000 for the charity from a combination of entry fees donated by the players and from each of the competing companies who sponsored specific holes along the course.

UK - Loudspeaker manufacturer Tannoy has thrown its weight behind the Red Dreams charity in Hartlepool, England, by donating two sets of studio monitors to help young sound technicians with recording and mix downs.

The charity, which supports young people in the area by providing various creative outlets, was set up by Ian McManus and his wife Dawn in memory of their son Kyle, who died tragically aged 16 from a brain haemorrhage. Since Kyle had such a keen interest in the arts, his parents began a legacy that now coaches and mentors young people in creative arts, providing a valuable focus and outlet.

UK - Two of theatre consultancy Charcoalblue's major projects, The New Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury and The Newcastle Theatre Royal, have won recognition from the prestigious Civic Trust Awards, which were held at City Hall in Cardiff and supported by Cardiff Council.

UK - As EMI held its annual BRITs after-show party on board the Silver Fleet's Silver Sturgeon, the production arm of London's newest rehearsal, production and storage facility SW19 provided both technical and logistical support for the event.

This was the third year running that the SW19 team had worked with EMI on the party, which welcomed a host of industry figures and artists aboard after the spectacular BRIT Awards Ceremony to celebrate another successful year for EMI's roster of artists, which includes Emeli Sande, Coldplay, Bastille and Noel Gallagher, who were all in attendance.

SW19 worked with EMI's Deby Bunyard and Caroline Hilton to realise their vision for a chic club / bar vibe, elegantly lit and with a distributed zoned audio system throughout the boat.

Fringe Society - A membership society for fringe venue operators has been launched in a bid to represent the interests of independent theatres and create a better trading platform for them. The Society of Independent Theatres aims to support venues with up to 300 seats by sharing marketing materials and audience data, as well as by recycling costumes and props. It also hopes to create partnerships between its member venues to encourage tours of shows between them. This will extend production runs so that critics are more likely to review fringe shows and create publicity for the venues, according to the society's board of directors.
