USA - Having used GLP's impression X4 LED heads in the design of Fleetwood Mac's current touring set, production designer Paul 'Arlo' Guthrie has turned to 16 of the small impression X4S for the current theatre (and festival) shows by veteran rock singer, Chris Isaak. These are mounted on five vertical pipes - four on the centre bar and three each on the others.

With economy at the forefront of his thinking, Guthrie sensed that the new X4S fixtures could not only be rigged quickly, within their own touring structures, but at the same time pack a lot of punch. "We haven't done a 'beamy' show for Chris in a while so I wanted something that was adaptable to the range of venues we were playing, and would provide us with options," he admits. "I also wanted a physically smaller light to fit with the scale of the show."

USA - "I am constantly impressed by our industry's desire to learn. PLASA is an accessible forum for all of us to stay informed and connected," says Christopher Kulesa, head of education for d&b audiotechnik US, who recently attended PLASA Focus in Austin, TX. Held 10-11 September, Kulesa hosted a seminar entitled Demystifying Audio on behalf of d&b.

"A smaller, regional show, PLASA Focus is great for beginners, professionals, and anyone inquisitive about audio. It's not about selling products, in fact, we try to keep our seminars as product neutral as possible. It's about developing relationships and continuing education."

"This type of conference offers a more personal and in depth experience for all of us," confirms Joe DiFalco, the d&b regional manager for the Southwest United States. "The community atmosphere at PLASA Focus enable

South Africa - The ETC Eos has claimed another first for the ETC family of lighting control products. Internationally acclaimed lighting designer Declan Randall decided to put the Eos to the test on the South African debut of Starlight Express on a specially adapted stage at the Joburg Theatre Complex, Johannesburg.

"I have been using the ETC Eos platform for almost four years now, so it was an easy decision for me to make to use the Eos for Starlight Express," says Randall.

Specified by Randall and supplied by ETC's South African-based dealer Prosound, the system includes an Eos RPU (Remote Processor Unit) which will serve as backup and Net3 Gateways to run the eight DMX universes to support the high fixture count and data distribution required for the show. The desk also utilises a wireless Ethernet network hub for remote control.

USA - Optocore was chosen by Audio Incorporated, supplier of sound reinforcement and communication equipment for US Open Tennis, to provide X6R-FX-Intercom devices for the communication system used during this year's U.S. Open opening ceremonies. The event was held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, part of the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Flushing, Queens, New York.

As Mike Sinclair of Audio Incorporated, the audio designer for the US Open live events for the past six years, explains, "We needed to find a way to connect the roof of the Broadcast Centre building with our central patch area at the other end of the stadium in the photographers' pit. We had to be ready to transport the programme audio feed, Clear-Com Encore Analog Party Lines converted to 4-wire for a production channel and a lighting channel. We also used Optocore's 100Mb LAN tunn

UK - It takes a brave and confident lighting designer to use some old fashioned, simple tungsten rope light to create one of the most memorable effects that will have graced a stage anywhere this year: the sigils that open the Robbie Williams show.

Supported by the production design and manufacturing house, Specialz, lighting designer Willie Williams comments, "Although I'm credited with the design of the sigils, in fact the original idea came from Robbie himself - quite literally as some of these symbols are tattoos that he has. For my part, we needed to turn these into something dramatic from a stage perspective, effective from a lighting point of view and durable for extensive touring." (A sigil is a sign or an image that supposedly possesses a magical power so any audience member who spent hours trying to decode them would have been wasting their time).

UK - In recent years the visual impact of combining architectural and stage lighting has come into its own, a fact not overlooked at this summer's Gala to celebrate the 60th year of the Queen's Coronation. Held in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace and organised by the Royal Warrant Holders Association, the event combined an exhibition of over two hundred suppliers to the Royal household with a spectacular three nights of musical performances.

With artists ranging from individual performers like Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins and Katie Melua to large scale group artists such as The National Youth Orchestra and the English National Ballet, any lighting design would have to be flexible and dynamic enough to cover every demand and yet stay sensitive enough to function as a live show for a 600 strong audience whilst being filmed for a prime BBC TV Saturday night slot.

UK - Production Resource Group, L.L.C. (PRG), supported the recently wrapped up Robbie Williams' Take The Crown tour, providing the lighting and crew. Williams' highly successful summer tour included 26 dates playing European stadiums. The lighting design was by the production's creative director Willie Williams, who also collaborated on the production design with scene designer/architect Mark Fisher and Ric Lipson of Stufish.

Williams and Fisher took design inspiration from the original album artwork that had of a golden bust of Robbie Williams' head. Germany - Amptown System Company (ASC) has taken on a dedicated dealership for Munich based fibre network specialists Optocore and BroaMan. The new partnership, which was confirmed at IBC 2013 in Amsterdam this month, will see ASC representing both brands in the system integration and live sectors, such as musicals and theatre.

Headquartered in Hamburg, ASC's ability to provide integrated solutions for media technologies draws on a rich company heritage within the group. Founded in 1973 by Peter Matthes and Ulrich (Uli) Müller as a music store for instruments and large scale sound reinforcement it was this passion for music and technology that sowed the seeds for the birth of ASC in 1990, which soon saw them working on major world famous musicals.

The two men, along with Leif Witte, have subsequently developed ASC into an experienced media engineering system house, which will

China - For the band's first-ever performances in China, Metallica delivered two packed shows at Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena. A Meyer Sound Leo linear large-scale sound reinforcement system was deployed by Ling Hua ProSLV.

"I was immediately struck by the linearity of the Leo system, even when it was pushed to very high levels," says Freddy Kot, chief engineer for Ling Hua ProSLV. "Even with sustained readings of over 112 dB at FOH, there was no distortion. And of course, the audience was just ecstatic with what they heard."

The system configuration for the show was handled by 'Big Mick' Hughes, Metallica's long-time FOH engineer, with assistance from consultant 'dB Dave' Dennison. The core flown LEO system comprised main front-hangs of 18-each Leo-M line array loudspeakers, 32 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements deployed in dual steerable arrays, an

UK - Lighting Designer Tom Sutherland - one of the UK's emerging talents - utilised 60 Robe LEDBeam 100s to great effect on the 2013 X-Factor Auditions which were staged at London's Wembley Arena.

Around 250 hopefuls gave it their all in front of the judges - each was allowed up to about 10 minutes of potential fame - in four very intense days during which they were ruthlessly culled to 100! These then progressed to the next stage - boot camp - of selecting the 12 finalists for the 2013 edition of the popular reality TV series.

His lighting rig was based on several curved trusses at different levels. The concept was to create one very dynamic lighting look which had to look fabulous - and appear different but complimentary - from multiple camera angles.

It was the first time he'd used Robe's LEDBeam 100s on this scale and also the first time in an arena.
