Australia - The Event Safety Alliance Australia (ESAA) has been established in response to the increasing need for a universal code of best practice in the live events industry.

Recognising "that the events industry is diverse encompassing not just the performing arts, but everything from public and corporate events to exhibitions and broadcast, wherever the same equipment and techniques are in use", The ESAA intends "to bring together all the players in the market to develop a truly representational voice for the Australian industry".

In the context of public event safety and emergency management, the ESAA aims are:

To develop and promote the Australian Event Safety Guide, across all States and Territories incorporating national and international standards of best practice.

To promote co-operation and mutual assistance between people and organizations.

USA - Milwaukee-based Clearwing Productions added 48 Martin MAC Aura LED fixtures to its inventory and promptly debuted the award-winning fixture on an All Time Low concert before hiring them out for work on a number of other events including Chris de Burgh's US tour, the Macy's Glamorama multi-city summer tour, and Tiesto's Summerfest concert at the Marcus Amphitheater in Milwaukee.

All Time Low played the Millikin University Big Event at the Kirkland Fine Arts Centre in Decatur, Illinois earlier in the year with lighting designer Jeff Maker placing the compact LED wash lights each side of the drum riser for colorful beam looks. Winner of the PLASA Award for Innovation, the MAC Aura is the first LED fixture to combine multicolor LEDs with a backlight colour mixing system to produce a whole new visual palette.

UK An Adlib crew led by Kenny Perrin returned for the sixth consecutive year to provide sound for the King Tut's Wah Wah Hut stage at the 2012 T in The Park Festival, staged at Balado, Kinross-shire

A dynamic line-up veered from dance to rock and pop to hip-hop, appealing to all ages and tastes. It included memorable performances from the likes of Fun, The Wanted, Nero, Skrillex, J-Cole, Miles Kane, Ben Howard and Calvin Harris.

Kenny Perrin was joined by Michael Bernard Flaherty, Sam Proctor & Steve Pattison, and once again, a JBL VerTec system was specified following its "all round" success in the tent in past years.

The main PA hangs comprised nine VT4889 speakers per-side, with four-a-side for the two delay towers, positioned left and right of the FOH mixer to ensure the sound radiated evenly out to cover the back of the enormous tent.

Russia - The Coliseum is one of the most popular entertainment venues in St Petersburg. Formerly, exhibitions of the plastic arts were staged in the venerable building, whilst a smaller hall added alongside was for a long time a cinema. Ten years ago, the 600-seater auditorium was renovated and equipped with a Dolby-certified sound reinforcement system from Electro-Voice. The new owner of the Coliseum, however, has now converted both venues into concert halls. Russian EV partner Ruton S was awarded the contract to equip both halls with new sound systems and chose XLVC and EVA line arrays from Electro-Voice.

The PA in the main hall consists of sixteen XLD281, four EVA-2151D and two Xsub enclosures driven by two TG5 and six CP4000S power amplifiers. As controllers, two Dx46 processors are on hand. Monitoring is facilitated by ten PX1122M wedges and four EVU2082/95 loudspeaker syst

UK - Flightcase manufacturer 5 Star Cases has supplied custom super-tough road cases to a Swedish collector Henrik Stuifbergen, for a number of artefacts from the White Star Line ocean liner RMS Olympic, sister ship and carbon copy of the ill fated RMS Titanic.

These went on display at The Exhibition Titanic that started in Spain 10 years ago and is currently showing in Barcelona until September, from where it will tour to other European destinations.

The exhibition has also visited Sweden, Germany and Denmark, and there are plans for an Asian Titanic exhibition in 2014, starting in Hong Kong.

With 2012 being the centenary of the Titanic's sinking, the exhibition has gathered momentum and interest.

Spain - Luc Peumans from Belgium based lighting and visual design practice Painting With Light has designed the set, lighting and video for a completely new production of the popular musical Daddy Cool which has opened at the Trui Theatre in Palma, Mallorca.

The colourful, action-packed show with a 30-strong cast produced by Robert Mackintosh and Frank Farian for Albert Verlinde Entertainment stars special guest Sheila Ferguson from The Three Degrees and features 25 hits from Boney M, Milli Vanilli, La Bouche, No Mercy and others.

Peumans had designed the original Dutch touring version of the show in 2011, which ran for five months, and this has now been adapted for the venue in Mallorca. The show is now also sung in English rather than Dutch.

UK - PLASA has announced the shortlist of nominees for this year's prestigious Gottelier Award.

Named in honour of Tony Gottelier, the designer, innovator and industry commentator who died in 2006, this prestigious annual presentation aims to recognise "the product designers and developers who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the development of the equipment and tools that enable our entertainment technology practitioners to continually push the boundaries of event production, presentation and installation".

This year, a panel of 20 people, all with links to the PLASA organisation or its Media divisions, was invited to put forward their suggestions for the most deserving individuals or teams according to this criteria. From there, the final shortlist of six nominees was reached.

Russia - Martin Professional's representative office in Russia and the CIS, in cooperation with Messe Frankfurt RUS, held a lighting designer contest as part of the Prolight + Sound NAMM Russia exhibition in Moscow.

"As Martin Professional is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, we wanted to share the occasion with our friends, partners and all who work in the amazing world of dynamic lighting," commented Anton Anufriev, product manager at Martin's Russian office.

A special area was constructed in a lighting pavilion at the exhibition and outfitted with MAC Auras, MAC 101s, MAC 700 Profiles and MAC 2000 Washes. Contest participants prepared and demonstrated a four-minute light show with music in real time using a Martin M1 lighting console.

The staff at the Halls, a versatile multi-purpose venue that hosts everything from concert recitals to wrestling to conferences to cinema to pantomime, felt that the time had come to replace the existing rig of 1000W Fresnels and Par Cans. The aim of both Michael Knight and Craig Gravett of Dorking Halls was to build a lighting rig that offered more versatility compared to the existing gear while retaining the high-quality illumination and fades the Hall's users expected - all while being more energy-efficient than the previous set-up.

Australia - The Burwood Inn is situated in Newcastle's beach side suburb of Merewether. It was established in 1876 and is the oldest continually operating hotel in the region. Although it has been a popular destination for famous sports people, musicians and other celebrities to visit for "a quiet one while in town", locally the Burwood was known as a very 'blokey' pub.

When the current owner's purchased the Burwood approximately four years ago, it was intended from the start to gut the original hotel and refurbish to suit a business model based on hotels around the Balmain, Surry Hills and Paddington areas of Sydney.

UK - London based lighting rental and visuals company, Colour Sound Experiment (CSE), has invested in a batch of new Robe moving lights, JTE trussing and Chauvet LED battens to help service its busy summer schedule of festivals.

This kicked off by supplying lighting production and crew to all stages at the Field Day / Applecart event in east London and for the Main and Second stages at the 2012 Rockness Festival in Dores, near Inverness, Scotland.

The new purchases included 26 of Robe's new Robin 1200 LEDWash fixtures - the largest model in their current LED wash series - which are generally reckoned to be the best on the market at this moment in time! They went straight out on these two initial festivals.

Croatia - Croatian classical superstars 2Cellos played an ecstatic 'homecoming' show in Zagreb Arena in front of 15,000 enthusiastic fans accompanied by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, with lighting and set designed by Dalibor Radic.

The lighting rig included 10 Robe MMX Spots which were positioned along the front of the stage on the floor and used for spectacular aerial effects.

These were supplied by leading Croatian rental company Eldra d.o.o., from Zagreb, who also supplied sound, staging and video for the concert. The company has made a significant investment in Robe MMX Spots recently.

USA - US sales of the newly launched digiLED MC range of indoor / outdoor modular LED tiles have provided the basis for strong international growth, says global video solutions provider displayLED.

UK - PA company, Production Hire was contracted to provide sound reinforcement for the live band element of the Rock of Ages film premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square recently.

The movie stars Tom Cruise in the fictional group Arsenal, while to mimic this the stage outside was rigged with Martin Audio's new MLA Compact.

According to Martin Audio's touring application support manager, Andy Davies, it was essential that this multi-cellular loudspeaker array technology was deployed owing to its absolute controllability, which mitigated concerns over noise issues. The rig consisted of two eight-deep MLA-C hangs either side of the stage and two four-deep MLA-C out-fill hangs (and four DSX subs).

Algeria - PR Lighting effects are being used heavily on the latest series of Algerian TV game show Takdar Tarbah (which translates as You Can Win).

Neosun Algerie, PR Lighting's Algerian distributors, delivered 38 projectors, including 20 XS 1200 Spot, 10 XS 1200 Wash and eight XLED 590 moving LED heads, to meet the set design of Thierry Rollin, who is also responsible for the lighting design of many TV game shows for the TF1 French channel.

Working directly with production company SD-BOX, the biggest independent producer of fiction and TV game programmes, the PR lighting FX were used to create three different ambient colours according to the different stages of the game. Thierry Rollin designed them into his set so that most were suspended from the ceiling grid, with just four XS 1200 spots and four XLED 590's on the floor.

The Netherlands - Amsterdam ArenA was transformed into an oasis of white for the premiere of Sensation's new show Source Of Light recently, when 40,000 people gathered under a huge dynamic spherical centrepiece dominated by bespoke LED strips from SGM.

SGM's Dutch distributor RentAll, who provide many of the custom solutions for the Dutch-based dance event company, were asked to provide the most dynamic single LED statement yet seen, to decorate an all aluminium, 14m radiating sphere, weighing 12 tons, and operated by multiple motors.

Sensation production manager, Joris Joosen, had wanted to combine retro and new generation beam effects - with something special to set it off. They contacted RentAll, who in turn approached SGM.

UK - Philips Entertainment and Architainment Lighting have loaned lighting design consultants dpa and social enterprise Industri[us] the latest Philips Selecon low energy, colour changing luminaires to enhance a regeneration project in the Olympic borough of Newham.

The Industri[us] project regenerates previously unused spaces by building temporary structures that add new significance to an area. For this Olympic project, a Pavilion has been erected fronted by a 30ft robot constructed entirely from waste material, that will showcase upcycled product. The initiative is designed to spotlight the creativity and resourcefulness of local people, and dpa is utlising Philips Selecon PLCyc 1 luminaires to ensure the project is eye-catching to people travelling to and from the Olympic Site.

UK - Sandwell College's new £77m Central Campus building in West Bromwich, which took four years in the planning, will provide an exciting new-age space for its performing arts students across the West Midlands.

With a new theatre space, two dance and drama studios needing to be equipped with the latest technology, they turned to Stage Electrics to provide the technical solution and installation.

Having also installed Sandwell College's previous building, a short distance away, Peter Coleman and Karl Formstone, who oversaw the business and technical requirements respectively, knew what was required by the college, and tendered successfully for the works, led by main contractors, Interserve Project Services.

UK - Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest television talent contest is a search for the lead role in a nationwide tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. The show is to be broadcast on ITV this summer and Sennheiser 8000 series wired microphones have been used exclusively throughout the recording of the auditions.

Entitled Superstar, responsibility for the audio recording lies with Meredith Broadcast Audio, a company well known for its work on some of UK televisions' highest profile programmes, including Top Gear, Masterchef and The Apprentice.

Company owner and Superstar location sound supervisor Richard Meredith needed microphones that would deliver equally high quality audio in a range of situations.
