UK - RTS Digital Intercoms have supplied a Cronus Digital Matrix to Glyndebourne Opera House as the centrepiece of a new "state of the art" integrated communications and paging system. The new system provides flexible paging to multiple zones and integrates production communications and 85 radio belt packs covering the site. The entire system is controllable from any PC in the complex via the easy to use software interface AZ Edit.

Simon Yapp, head of audio visual and sound at Glyndebourne and his colleague Keith Benson, head of lighting, needed to find a solution to replace the Glyndebourne's old paging system, which had become unsupportable. The solution was required to not only replace the original paging system with 16 zones but also offer increased flexibility without throwing away the existing cable infra-structure and speaker system, all of which were still serv

USA - The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery's 2008 Symposium & Congress, which recently met in Chicago, was one of the first corporate events to use High End Systems' DL.3.

Production supplier and lighting designer Dale Sahlin of Fusion Design LIVE, Las Vegas specified eight DL.3 digital light fixtures and two Road Hog Full Boar consoles for the event's show producer Audio Visual Management Group (AVMG) of Dallas. Intelligent Lighting Creations of Arlington Heights, Ill., supplied the equipment.

Sahlin says: "We were fortunate to use DL.2s with AVMG over the last year on numerous shows and when we talked about this show, they were excited to be the first to use the DL.3s on show site."

DL.3 is a digital lighting fixture equipped with a 6500 lumen three-chip LCD projector and an onboard media server. New features include an SDI input/out for profes

Bandit Lites UK Chief Executive, Lester Cobrin comments, "It has been a pleasure to watch Westlife mature into an extremely talented group of performers over the last 10 years. It continues to be an honour to be part of their production team."

The 2008 show was designed and directed by William Baker, who also designed the set, with the lighting design created by Baz Halpin.

Halpin went for a very theatrical look with all the structures concealed, apart from a centre stage 'W' shaped truss. Lighting fixtures were all positioned on a series of angled trussing sections, some of which moved.

Starting upstage, there were six moving trusses, all susp

Germany - Waxy's Irish Pub opened its doors for the first time on 13 December 2007, in a prime central location right behind the Frankfurt stock exchange. Considerable importance was attached to the sound system installed. The task of planning was entrusted to YourEvent, directed by Mario Klein; Ludwig Becker of The Guitar Place Aschaffenburg handled the installation.

The unusual décor of the venue, which consists of a restaurant and a club, suggests the interior of an Irish church - complete with a mock organ, statues of angels, choir stalls, and a mock pulpit. Klein opted for a decentralized sound reinforcement concept, in accordance with the wishes of the Doyle family, who now run a total of seven Irish Pubs throughout Europe.

After careful testing, Klein opted for a mixture of different VariLine loudspeakers (VL62, VL262 and VL122) from Dynacord, plus FX20 subwoofer

Brazil - More than 170,000 people were recently attending for four days the 10th edition of the Festival de Verao in Salvador, Bahia in North-East Brazil, featuring bands including Ivete Sangalo, Babado Novo, Jammil, Eagle Cherry, Margareth Menezes, Beth Carvalho, Asa de Aguia, Timbalada and many more. For this large show lighting designer Marcelo Marino used a grandMA system consisting of one grandMA full-size, one light, one ultra-light, three video media servers, two MA NSPs and grandMA 3D for pre-programming.

Marino reported: "Due to the flexibility, the power and the reliability of the equipment, grandMA was our first choice. We preprogrammed the show and ran it with the total accuracy that is typical for the grandMA. The system is very strong and reliable."

Ivete Sangalo Band, with the programmer and operator Junior Luzbel, who used his own grandMA full-

Germany - The Thalia Theater in Hamburg, one of Germany's oldest, has chosen an Alcons QR36 system as its main sound reinforcement system. After many tests and measurements, Florian Scheunemann, head of sound department and Tobias Wursthorn, planning-assistant of the theatre, decided to go for QR36 pro-ribbon loudspeakers.

Scheunemann reports: "Soon after the first tests, it became clear what a remarkable resolution a pro-ribbon system has, as well as how exact the dispersion of the QR's really is. The refined architecture of the venue does not allow for every sound system design, as the ground floor seating needs to be covered without any interference. The QR's seemed to be the perfect fit."

Scheunemann continues: "Absolutely convincing, however, was the throw of the brilliant ribbon highs, that made a delay line obsolete. For a further system extension, we hav

UK - Adlib Lighting supplied equipment and crew for the recent Velvet Revolver UK tour. They first worked with the band on their successful 2007 tour. Adlib Lighting's Pete Abraham says: "It was a pleasure to be back working with Velvet Revolver again. It was an extremely well thought-out design and looked great in all the venues, even when reduced to fit the smaller stage sizes."

Working closely with LD Fuji (David Convertino), the Adlib Lighting team consisted of Andy Rowe, Tim Spilman and Richard Babington. The tour visited a wide variety of different sized venues - from regional Academies to London's Brixton Academy and the Brighton Centre, so the rig had to be adaptable.

With traditional rock 'n' roll aesthetics at its core - beam technology, high contrast bright and bold colours - the lighting design was based on two trusses. The front truss contained 60 PARs a

UK - Southampton City Council has launched its spectacular Halation project, illuminating the city's historic 600 year-old High Arcades along Western Esplanade with colour-changing linear LED strips from Pulsar Light.

The initiative to highlight Southampton's five medieval arches near the waterfront is the result of collaboration between lighting artist Simon Watkinson and Southampton City Council, under public arts officer Liz Smith. Costing £74,000 to stage, the project - part of the Southampton Public Art Strategy initiative - has been funded by the Area Investment Framework (AIF) and rubber-stamped by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Southampton Partnership. Halation will run for a minimum of 18 months.

Tyneside-based Simon Watkinson's work (largely within the Old Town walls) is already familiar to the Southampton community, and he has tur

Norway - The celebrated FIS World Cup skiing competitions are a tradition dating back nearly a century. For the sixth year, the Norwegian city of Drammen played host to the Cross-Country Sprint race for 1,700 athletes to compete in the city streets. The annual event attracted thousands of winter sports fans, many of whom pitched tents overnight to claim the best spots along the route.

The track encircled the main city center with the finish line in front of the historic Bragernes Church. Two large video displays enabled the crowds to follow the action while a Sound MICA and M3D line array loudspeaker system provided by Oslo-based AVAB CAC ensured that the attendees could hear the event clearly from anywhere along the route.

The nature of the outdoor event presented multifaceted challenges, each of which was tackled using a seamlessly integrated Meyer Sound system. "The Cr

Italy - Rimini's Paradiso is one of the few clubs in the world able to boast a 50-year history. The venue, offering clients a breathtaking view from its vantage point overlooking the Adriatic Riviera, recently made front-page news when the new owners - Luca De Simone and Alessandro Volta - announced their intention to re-open the legendary Italian venue precisely 50 years after its original inauguration, undertaking to restore it to its position as one of Europe's leading venues, and adopting a Martin Audio sound system.

The club became by-word on the international club scene thanks to the far-sighted management between 1970 and 2001 of Gianni Fabbri - son of Mirti Fabbri, who had the original idea of converting her country villa into a top class venue in 1957. Now the venue has again undergone a substantial renovation and technical upgrade before reopening its doors again to a

USA - NAB 2008 sees the fruits of a collaborative effort between Neumann and UK-based digital mixing console manufacturer, allowing Neumann's digital microphones to interface directly with DiGiCo's desks.

"Despite the development of the AES 42 interface, there wasn't any easy way to directly connect Neumann digital series microphones to a console," explains Sennheiser's senior applications engineer, Mike Pappas. "Now, with DiGiCo directly supporting AES 42, we have a digital path from microphone to speaker."

The latest Neumann product on show at NAB will be the TLM 103 D, the next classic microphone to enter the digital realm. Its integrated, fast peak limiter promises optimal recording levels at all times and the Neumann A/D converter built into the microphone eliminates the necessity of tedious experimentation with external converters and preamps, says th

Australia - Anolis LED fixtures are illuminating a spectacular key water feature at the entrance to Sydney's Star City Casino. The installation is the first of its type in Australia to integrate Anolis in this specific way, and was designed by a leading Sydney-based water feature specialist

The Anolis products were supplied by the brand's Australian distributor, ULA, for whom the project was overseen by Con Nomikos from. It is the first of a series of water features in and around the Star City complex that will be lit or re-lit with Anolis.

The prime position of this fountain at the entrance of the Casino is designed to make people stop and look before being enticed up the steps and through the portals onto the gaming floor, so it was essential that it was bright, lively and eye-catching.

The circular shaped fountain encompasses three concentric circles of Anolis. There is a

UK - Watford Grammar School's new music centre, designed by Tim Ronalds Architects, has bnenefitted from treatment by Arup Acoustics. Additionally, ETC lighting and controls have been installed by Lighting Logic.

Raf Orlowski, director at Arup Acoustics, says, "Around 15 years ago, Arup Acoustics carried out a survey of music facilities in schools for the then DfES and found inadequate conditions in many instances; pupils practicing in corridors, music classes blighted by extraneous noise and band rehearsals in totally inappropriate acoustic environments. This survey led eventually to the publication in 2004 of a government directive, Building Bulletin 93, which has resulted in a massive change in the acoustic quality of new music facilities and school buildings in general.
