Italy - At the recent Winter Olympic Games, the nightly medals presentations were conducted in the heart of Turin, followed by a celebration which included concerts of various artists and fireworks. All this took place at the Medal Plaza, located directly beside the Piazza Castello in front of the Royal Castle.

The consoles of choice for controlling these complex lighting systems were grandMA multimedia consoles. Lighting designer Giovanni Pinna used a grandMA full-size and two grandMA light desks to control the large lighting system for Medal Plaza. He had to control more than 300 moving lights, countless Pars, fresnels, profiles, strobes and LED fixtures for the different areas on and off stage. One grandMA light served as backup while the second one took control of the LED fixture installation on stage.

But Medal Plaza was not the only place where grandMA multimedia console

UK - SPS supplied the Kennel Club with a spectacular LED display for this year's Crufts event - the world's leading dog show. The installation of a four sided 'cube' display was a great solution that provided stunning visuals to all four corners of the arena - something not achieved in previous years.

Nicholas Brooks-Ward of the Kennel Club commented: "Everyone at Crufts was thrilled with the screens. They added a huge amount to the event for everyone in the arena as well as forming an intrinsic part of the BBC television coverage."

Four-sided displays are becoming more common in permanent arena installations, but this was the first time that a temporary installation of this kind has been installed at the NEC. Barco Dlite 7mm LED provided the viewing public with clear high resolution images. Each screen measured 10sqm 3.6m wide by 2.5m high. Live feeds from the BBC w

Canada - McGill University in Montreal is no stranger to technology. A school renowned for state-of-the-art education in audio recording, video, performing arts and audio research has teamed with Sennheiser Canada to bring cutting-edge sound reinforcement technology to the university. Peter Holmes, technical manager for McGill was looking for a natural sound for classical music, speakers that don't sound like a typical PA with a palatable timbre to the educated ear.

"With our limited budget, we expected it would be difficult to find a loudspeaker system that would be liked and appreciated by our demanding user base. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to hear the K&F offering. Since we installed the system we have had many compliments on the quality of sound reinforcement in our new hall."

Denmark - The Danish Music Awards 2006 were celebrated this month at Copenhagen's KB Hallen, with the two-and-a-half hour event broadcast live to air on Danish National Radio (DR) and television (DR1). With 10 of the 12 bands performing live, a Digidesign 96-channel Venue system was used both in the OB truck, where the desk was tracked to Pro Tools HD, and at front-of-house.

All acts were accompanied by their own sound engineers for the FOH mix (and many for the OB). Even though most had no previous experience of Venue this seemed to represent no obstacle. "Everyone was excited about the sound quality, the ease of use and the use of the plug-ins," says Digidesign's Ineke van der Voort, who provided support in the OB truck. All mixes were stored into snapshots.

As the sound designer (and FOH engineer) for this year's DMA, Claus Pedersen was able to choose the console

Ireland - i-Vision has supplied an eye-catching internal architectural lighting scheme based on its Lumos LED lightsources for Brubakers, the latest multi-purpose night venue to open in Ireland's buzzing new party town of Dundalk. The venue was previously incarnated as a long, narrow space that served as a pub but was totally inadequate for staging live bands.

Owner and local entrepreneur Declan Muckian had the place gutted and re-designed from the ground up, transforming the same footprint into a classy and more functional new 650 capacity environment combining four bars, a restaurant area, dance-floor and live music facilities. He called in Eamonn O'Neil from Vibe Sound & Lighting to supply a top quality audio, AV and lighting package, and he in turn asked i-Vision's Geoff Jones onboard to design and supply the specialist environmental lighting requirements.

UK - The Riccallish Allsorts, a community theatre group from Riccall, Yorkshire, began planning their 2005 Christmas pantomime early in October. An important feature was to be the new stage, for which a grant had been provided. Value for money was an obvious factor in finding the ideal company to provide the equipment. Ken Davison, of the Allsorts, requested a quote from Maltbury.

As staging requests go, this one was fairly simple. A stage was needed that could be easily assembled, but also give a professional appearance. Metrodeck was the perfect system to replace their ageing chipboard stage. Affordable and simple, the Metrodeck could be quickly assembled by any member of the group to create a professional stage, and was also easy and quick to store.

The staging provided was used in conjunction with a trussing structure and drapes to create a self-sufficient proscenium-arch

UK - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's first collaboration, and its history has been one of evolution, an evolution that continues in the current national revival tour of the show.

Joseph was only 15 minutes long when first performed as a cantata in 1968, but grew in subsequent versions to 40 minutes and, finally, a full 90-minute musical. The new production shows its evolution in the technical aspects of production, especially its sound system: self-powered loudspeakers from Meyer Sound and, at the FOH position, an LCS Audio Matrix3 audio show control system with a CueConsole control surface. The system was specified by Duncan Robert Edwards, the show's sound designer, and supplied by Specialized Audio-Video, N.Y., with logistical coordination by Mark Norfolk and Mike Weirich.

France - The first Studer Vista 8 digital audio front-of-house console to be used in Paris's theatreland has been installed in the 1000-capacity Theatre de la Ville, which has chosen Studer as the digital platform for an extensive refurbishment programme that will take place over two years.

Once known as Theatre Sarah Bernhardt for its association with the legendary French actress, this popular municipal theatre now offers the top names in contemporary dance, innovative French theatre, and evening concerts of jazz and world music.

In 2003, the audio production team, led by Pierre Tamisier, began the search to replace the theatre's 12-year old Studer 900 analogue console. Having examined digital technology from several other leading manufacturers, they still wound up at the door of Audiopole, distributor of Studer in France, with an order for a 32-fader Vista 8 with 10-fader ex

UK - As they complete a major round of Brannigans bar lighting and video makeovers for owners Herald Inns & Bars, contractors PV Audio Video have found Futurelight products to form an irresistible combination over the dancefloor.

Having recently completed sites in Manchester and Reading (with the final venue in Warrington destined to be rebranded), PVAV's Peter Varey believes his quest for reliable, cost-effective lighting has ended with the discovery of Futurelight's DJ-Scan 250 and CY-250 - distributed by Fuzion plc's lighting division (DiFuzion).

The former is an innovative DJ-scanner with rotating gobos; seven dichroic colourfilters (plus white); rainbow effect with adjustable speed in both directions; gobo-wheel with seven rotating gobos (open and blackout) and strobe effect with adjustable speed (1-10 flashes/sec).

The CY-250 is a similarly-featured barrel effect, whic

UK - One of the harder working bands around, Mudvayne has spent as much of the past six years on tour as off. Their most recent outing with Sevendust on the Masters of Horror Tour covered more than 30 cities over a two-month period. New England-based Rainbow Production Services provided a sound system built around Meyer Sound's Milo high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers for the dates, which leaned toward larger arenas, amphitheaters and stadiums.

FOH mixer Scott Tkachuk commanded the rig, which featured 24 Milo cabinets, two Milo 120 high-power expanded coverage curvilinear array loudspeakers, and a dozen 700-HP ultrahigh-power subwoofers.

"The Milo is really proving to be one of the most versatile line arrays there is," Tkachuk says. "It's amazing that a system capable of handling the nuance and detail of acoustic guitars and jazz can also deliver th
