UK - ADC's first major installation at London Luton Airport involved the design, supply and installation of PA and paging for the new walkways and gates built in the summer of 2002. At that time a TOA SX-1000 paging matrix and various branded loudspeakers were used to provide paging for the new build and also paging facilities for the entire old terminal, replacing their existing control system. All of the old paging panels were upgraded to custom ADC designed and supplied units and new amplifiers were installed to drive both the new loudspeakers and also the older legacy system.

The New Terminal Building's (NTB) existing voice alarm systems front end control and amplifiers were upgraded by ADC to a TOA VX-2000 integrated voice evacuation control system. Fibre-optic LAN based paging and control systems have also been installed throughout the airport complex and WAN based technol

UK - Javier Weyler, drummer with Stereophonics, has one of the most extraordinary stories to tell. One minute he was working as an assistant engineer at various studios across London, the next he was playing drums for Stereophonics in front of billions at Live 8 . . .

He met Kelly and Rich from the band while working at BJG-Sahara Sound. They quickly clicked and became friends and he ended up playing some percussion on their album You Gotta Go There To Come Back. Last year he then got an unexpected call from the band to work with them on their latest album, Language, Sex, Violence. Other? "I started playing along with them and we just clicked," he says - so well that he has now become a fully paid up member of the band. "It was when we were mixing that we had a chat about it and everything came together. It has been a very natural process."

USA - For the fifth consecutive year, Visual Terrain Inc. has successfully produced Organ Power In Concert for the Roland Corporation. This event was held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, California. This is the eighth annual production in association with other Roland activities surrounding The NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Traditionally, Organ Power is staged with both live and videotaped performances. This year, set designer Edward Marks added another challenging element to the staging with raised turntables and serpentine ramps, creating intimacy to the expansive stage.

To meet the logistic lighting challenge of a revolving set, a large part of the solution according to lighting director Jeff Ravitz is careful coordination and flexibility. "Our goal was to create an intimate setting for each performer and at the same t

Ireland - LX2000 Stage Lighting Hire has become the first company in the Republic of Ireland to purchase a Jands Vista console, taking delivery of a T2 for the 2005 Wexford Festival Opera season at the Theatre Royal, last October.

The company specialises in providing a complete lighting service from equipment dry hire through to lighting design, rentals and installations for clients all over Ireland operating in the theatre, entertainment and events sectors.

LX2000's Seamus Reck had been a very satisfied Jands Event 408 user for the past four years, but had decided it was time to upgrade to a newer console with the extra programming power and DMX channels needed to handle the production needs of larger clients.

Reck had seen the Jands Vista launch at PLASA and was extremely impressed by it. Then earlier this year, having decided the timing was now right to upgrade, he came b

USA - A sound system that's perfect for DJ's is not generally the ideal setup for live performances, but that didn't stop San Francisco's Mezzanine from trying to deliver both. After three years of dedicated effort to establish itself as a premier venue for DJ talent from around the world, the club wanted to start competing for top-name live acts.

The club's first step was to hire production manager Josh Roberts, whose resume includes A-list names like Ben Harper, Beth Orton, King Crimson and Meat Beat Manifesto. While Roberts was happy with Mezzanine's existing DJ gear, he knew that an entirely different sound system was needed for the club to attract A-level live acts. "We had a four-way Funktion One loudspeaker system that delivered great highs and lows, but they lacked the mid range required for live concert sound," said Roberts. "Besides, it's unnatural to wa

France - In Grenoble, France, the 4th International Circus Festival provided two of the pioneers of EtherSound-based networking technology with a unique showcase for their products. Nexo and AuviTran collaborated with sound rental company IZO and Yamaha France to provide a sound reinforcement system for the four-day Festival which transmitted entirely over an EtherSound network.

Staged in the Palais des Sports de Grenoble, the focus of the Festival was on two round circus stages, each 12m wide, in a 2,000sq.m hall. More than 16,000 spectators attended the event. IZO provided Yamaha PM5D digital consoles mixing Nexo's GEO S tangent-array systems, powered by Camco Vortex 6 amplifiers, with AuviTran's EtherSound conversion and compatibility management devices ensuring full network capability over optical fibre.

USA - Pennsylvania-based Community Loudspeakers recently donated morethan six hundred loudspeakers to help with the rebuilding efforts, after the disasters of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Working together with a consortium of church groups, the company arranged for a truck-load of speakers to be distributed to churches, schools and other public facilities in the region.

"We were originally contacted by the Rev. Dr. Bayard S. Taylor Jr., Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church here in Chester," explains Christine Howze, community general manager. "Reverend Taylor put us in touch with Pastor Lewis Ragins of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Gulfport." Community worked with Pastor Ragins to arrange the shipment, valued at well over $100,000, to the Gulfport area.

USA - More news from ESTA's Technical Standards Program: At its meeting on January 20, the Electrical Power Working Group approved the start of a project to write a standard to offer guidance on the inspection of stage and studio luminaires.

The new project, BSR E1.32-200x, Recommended Practice for the Inspection of Entertainment Industry Luminaires, is designed to help electricians conduct regular inspections of lighting instruments. In working on the BSR E1.19 GFCI project, it has become clear to the working group that one of the causes of ground-fault circuit interrupters tripping on stages, in studios, and on location shoots is faulty lighting equipment. Regular inspection would allow faults to be identified and corrected so they aren't risks to personnel or causes of production delays.

USA - 14 Robe ColorSpot 1200 AT's were the hub of Helena Kuukka's lighting design for the Fort Lauderdale Christmas Pageant, staged in the 2.500 capacity First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale.

The show celebrated it's 22nd year by running for two sold-out weeks in, playing to over 50,000 people during the period. It was also broadcast on national TV and to several foreign countries during the holiday season. The show has won 2 local Emmy Awards and is produced into a DVD each year.

Lighting equipment and programming expertise was supplied by locally-based Paradigm Productions, and the show electricians and installation crew came from Majestic Productions.

Kuukka had a 70 ft wide stage and a cast of about 300 to cover, so she needed really bright fixtures, and chose the Robes as key moving light tools for the job, which also included a large conventional rig. "I

Australia - Queensland-based Audio Visual Devices has supplied an LSC maXim MP lighting console and two LSC iPAK 12 channel dimmers to Victoria Point High School. AVD's managing director David Duffy had originally allowed for another desk and dimmers until he checked out the LSC maXim. It was then that he realised just how ideal LSC consoles are for school environments.

"The maXim is easy to use and the PatPad, although integrated into the console, is a separate module which I like," said Duffy. "It's good the way you can use the maXim as a straight preset console or a scene-style console and advance from there. The maXim allows you to start with something really basic, such as one fader per light and you advance from there. This progressive learning makes it ideal for schools. Some of the other consoles on the market require you to master quite a bit before they'

The company will be able to run their new system on a Camco EtherCAI wireless network.

Kevin Wilson, MD of the York-based company, said: "I had been aware of the Nexo pedigree for a long time and our first chance to use a system came in front of 17,000 people in Trafalgar Square - with assistance from Nexo's UK distributors Fuzion and A.C. Lighting."

Pride had struggled to achieve even coverage at past festivals, and following complaints about the sound distribution, Camel Event Production had been tasked with the challenge. "It was Peter

UK - Leading crowd management specialist Showsec has commissioned a new Health and Safety course for its supervisory staff after discovering a need for training at this level. In 2005, Showsec completed Health and Safety training for its 28-strong management team, but in trying to implement the next tranche of the development programme, was unable to source a suitable training course for it's supervisory staff. They found the solution to the deficiency by commissioning a brand new course set to run across the company's nine UK offices from March this year.

Showsec has continued with the investment and expansion of it's training and research department in 2006. The staff development programme will set new standards within the industry, say the company.

The IOSH-accredited Supervising Safety in the Events Industry course has been devised by Showsec's training manager Roy Wise, H

UK - Chris Madden is one of an increasing number of sound engineers who have familiarised themselves with Digidesign's Venue environment - without needing to venture near an operator's manual. Madden says the only pages he refers to are the screen versions on his D-Show desk, which he has laid out in a logical two-tier arrangement.

It is 20 years since Mike Scott put his first Waterboys line-up together and Madden has worked with them for the last six, with many of his show recordings appearing on the band's latest Karma To Burn live CD. Karma To Burn also provided the name for their latest 10-day UK theatre tour, which completed this month.

Chris also handles the FOH mix for Charlotte Church and Gabrielle - but it was Liverpool band the La's that gave him his intro to Venue, when sound engineer Pab Boothroyd extolled its virtues before handing over the FOH position to
