Europe - Bandit Lites is supplying a full lighting production and crew package for the current Elvis Costello tour - hot on the heels of its work with the 'other' Elvis tour 'Elvis The Concert'. Elvis Costello - one of the world's most loved and acclaimed multi-disciplinary musicians - has been a Bandit account on both sides of the Atlantic for some years. The current LD is Liam McCarthy, one of a number of candidates put forward by Bandit three years ago, when Costello last sought an LD. This leg of the tour sees a step up in production size which is project managed by Bandit's Lester Cobrin.

The essence of lighting Costello is keeping it understated, subtle and in the background - so it's not a distraction to him and his music, explains McCarthy. There's specific things he doesn't like - including smoke, spot lights or audience lighting, and certain things he does like - like

USA - A Hog iPC is being used for control of the Nine Inch Nails' tour's lighting show. LD Roy Bennett designed the tour, with lighting director Chad Smith out as board op. Recently, lighting contractor PRG had purchased a number of Hog iPC lighting consoles, so Smith switched out his Wholehog 2 for the new unit with the tour already underway.

"I heard good things about the Hog iPC from Butch Allen, who's using it on Garbage, so I was excited about it," Smith says. "So when we were in Boston, I switched out the day of show. I was freaking out at first, thinking, 'What am I doing?'. In this show, there is no room for error, but I felt confident with the console. I powered it up and ran my show and I haven't looked back."

Hog iPC is the newest product in the Wholehog family of controllers, and the industry's first hybrid console - it's designed to use the Who

UK - Since its opening in 1997, Itsu has become synonymous with chic yet accessible Japanese eating. Owned and run by the same duo responsible for the Pret A Manger chain, Itsu currently has four sites across London. The flagship restaurant in Chelsea boasts an enviable location in the heart of Brompton Cross. When the decision was taken to upgrade its sound system, restaurant manager Dan Levine turned to AV specialist Sound Division.

Sound Division's David Graham explained that the brief was to refurbish and upgrade the existing Bose installation and reconfigure it into a multi-zone system. "Stage one of the project was to replace and zone the upstairs level which comprises three sections; the main lounge bar; an intimate 'Cocoon' bar for 6-8 people which can be hired out on a private basis; and a walkway which connects the two." The equipment in use features Sennheiser Evolution 600 and 900 series microphones on drums and percussion, plus the Sennheiser MD431-II for lead singer Dave Grohl.

"I've wanted to try a 431 on Dave's vocals for a long time," reveals monitor engineer Ian Beveridge, a Scot who has worked with the band, "pretty much my whole life. It's a long-term thing." He comments: "A lot of companies manufacture a spike in the mic response, but I wanted something that was totally flat. The 431 is the flattest vocal mic I've ever heard, even flatter than a lot of condensers. You can make it sound however you like. And it's amazingly smooth."

UK - Fisher Marine has recently completed a major overhaul of two Thomson cruise ships, Destiny and Celebration. The six-month project involved the complete transformation of nightclubs, casinos, lounges, piano bars, restaurants and deck systems on board both ships. New sound, lighting and video equipment was installed throughout as each area was redesigned to bring it up to the latest technical and esoteric standards.

In conjunction with audio specialists Delta Sound, Fisher Marine installed thousands of metres of cable - all of which was supplied by UK-based cable company VDC Trading. "These are big ships," says Fisher Marine's head Ken Fisher, "so there was certainly a lot of cable involved."

Norway - Laser Production Network (LaserNet) has installed four separate laser systems on Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) newest ship, the 81,000-ton Pride of America. LaserNet technicians went to Bremerhaven shipyard in Germany to carry out the work which included installation of the first RGB (white light) diode DPSS laser system in the main show lounge.

"One of the main directives from NCL was that all the lasers had to be air-cooled and yet they wanted white light graphic capability on the main stage," says LaserNet president Tom Harman. "In the past, this would mean water hoses, expensive heat exchangers, and three phase electricity. However, by using the current laser technology of solid state diodes, we were able to provide a full colour laser system without all that hassle."

In addition to the solid-state white light system, two Copper Bromide lasers

USA - TMB PowerPAR lighting instruments are being used to highlight two rotating automobiles from a trim height of 85ft, while conserving fixture count, in a recently installed display in the lobby of the Renaissance Center General Motors HQ in Detroit. Tom Bagnasco, president of Lighting Design Services Inc, located in Harrison Township, Michigan, accomplished the job using only eight TMB PowerPAR luminaires in the 40ft x 100ft atrium at the Renaissance Center. The main entry lighting was designed by Bagnasco, utilizing TMB PowerPARs and other equipment purchased from Light Source Inc of Milford, Michigan.

"After much research, we found the TMB PowerPAR to be the perfect choice for this application. The entire room is stainless steel and glass so overcoming the glare problems required a versatile unit to control beam patterns and spread," says Bagnasco. "Furtherm
