UK - With a reputation for good sound, comfortable surroundings and a bar stretching along the side of the venue, Club West OneFour at The Fox, West Kensington, achieved status as an international venue for hosting launches of new groups and artists some years ago. UK - Having enjoyed the company's busiest ever February in the corporate events sector, Shaun Pearce, managing director of Pearce Hire, has heralded the return of economic growth as corporate events re-establish their importance in the marketing and communications strategies of businesses. He commented: "Just as events seemed to have gained their place within the corporate world three years ago the worldwide economy pushed them off the agenda. Fierce competition over recent years has focused suppliers to deliver higher standards; we have been continually monitoring the market and our forward planning has enabled us to keep pace with the upturn and service event requirements at short notice this Spring."

At the start of the year, says Pearce, the company's order book gave no indication that during one week this February the Pearce Hire team would have been working on ev

USA - 12 High End Systems ColorCommands are enhancing the weekly worship message at the Fellowship of the Woodlands in Woodlands, Texas. ColorCommand is a dichroic colour-mixing Par/washlight fixture that offers complete freedom from gels and colour scrollers.

Dave Marks, the media minister, LD, technical director and set designer, says the ColorCommands are a big asset to the 4,400 capacity venue. "We have 300 dimmers, but mostly I use the 12 ColorCommands. They are awesome. I absolutely can't imagine doing what we do without them," Marks says.

It's "divine intervention," Marks claims, that plays a role in their successfully executed set designs, which vary each week to enforce the message from the minister. The four-person production team making it happen includes Marks and a carpenter, audio director and video director. "The ColorCommands save a hug

UK - KV2 Audio reports the first installation of its ES system for the Edwards chain, courtesy of Orritt Electronics in Liverpool. Trailing a concept dubbed "Club Edwards" the owners wanted to enhance the existing sound system at their Liverpool venue, with something that would still look discreet, but allow them to compete on a more equal footing with some of the legendary clubs in the city.

After an extensive look at the marketplace Dave Orritt, of Orritt Electronics, realized KV2's ES system would be the perfect product for this application, and immediately arranged a demo. The clients didn't take much convincing, and within a few weeks their concept turned to reality. From a practical point of view, the amplifier room was a long way from the speakers and since the initial first fix, many walls had been plastered and cable routes blocked off. The flexibility of the

Belgium - The open-air concert given by Sugar Daddy, Kana, Starflam and others in Charleroi on the 20th September 2003 was one of the highlights of last year's concert season in Belgium. As well as the superb line-up of artists, the great atmosphere and the audience of 40,000, the show also featured the Dynacord Cobra-4 compact line array system, which was making its first appearance on Belgian soil.

Jan Crutelle, system engineer with EVI Audio's Belgian partners Prevost, was advising the rental company Omega Production at the time and remembers: "Many of the Omega technicians simply refused to believe that so few - and such compact - enclosures really could be capable of covering an area of 100 x 80m. They soon learned differently!"

The technical tandem of Omega Production and Prevost opted to fly an approximately 6m high main system (right and left), consisting of

UK - Broadcast and integration specialists, Feltech Electronics, have devised an ingenious rear projection solution in two newly-fitted studios for ITN, based around custom-designed mirror rigs from Paradigm Audio Visual. Feltech has a long association with ITN: project manager Luke Marler-Hausen, installed a big screen display for the ITV Evening News schedules several years ago, while Feltech MD Peter Fell is also a former ITN man.

Thus the station felt comfortable in asking the Hertfordshire-based resource to devise and project manage a rear-projected display wall solution for their newly revamped ITV News main studios at their London HQ. While on site, the company was also tasked with providing a similar infrastructure for the London Tonight studio.

"We realised that the limited space behind the four large displays also had to incorporate walkways for fire exits,&quo

UK - When the hit musical Jerry Springer: The Opera transferred to the West End, it marked another first for the close working relationship between The Moving Light Company and Vari-Lite (now a division of the Genlyte Thomas Group) - the West End debut of Vari-Lite's new VL3000 range.

In re-designing the show for the Cambridge Theatre, lighting designer Rick Fisher was looking for a moving spotlight that packed a considerable degree of punch and could be used to create a wide range of effects. With its 1200W HMI lamp, 10-60° zoom range, colour mixing and three wheels of rotating and indexing gobos, the VL3000 Spot luminaire proved ideal. Vari-Lite were able to get the 17 units to The Moving Light Company in time for the production; Fisher's design also called for 14 VL2000 Wash fixtures, three VL1000TS luminaires and three VL5 units which The Moving Light Company were ab

UK - A new morning TV show, OK!TV, made in conjunction with OK magazine and presented by Ronan Keating and Gail Porter, made its debut on ITV 1 on 16 January. Running in place of This Morning for the duration of half-term week, the producers knew that the audience would differ, with children and students tuning in as well as their usual viewers, and so the 'look' of the set had to reflect this difference.

Arts director Anthony Cartlidge explained: "We really wanted to make the viewers realize that although they were tuning in to the same channel and the same time slot, OK!TV is very different from This Morning. We have a 'bar' area where presenters and guests can sit and chat casually, a soft seating area, a performance space and a fashion runway which is built using LiteStructures ChromaDeck."

UK - Wigwam Acoustics has made a major investment in Martin Audio Line Array technology, following an intensive search for a compact system to complement its existing hire stock. With the purchase, Wigwam renews an association with the High Wycombe company that began more than 25 years ago. Both Wigwam managing director, Mike Spratt, and hire director, Chris Hill, stressed the significance of having the confidence to "buy British" after successfully auditioning the Martin systems at Manchester MEN and Liverpool Cathedral.

The initial order comprises 24 each of the Compact (W8LC) and Mini (W8LM) Line Array, along with 12 of the complementary WLX subwoofers and associated flying hardware. UK - XL Video has supplied equipment to Marcy Kahan's stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London's West End. The popular 1980s hit movie starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal made famous by its in-restaurant orgasm scene, repeats the controversy on the stage with gusto!

UK - TV lighting directors Mark Kenyon and Will Charles are pioneering the use of digital media servers in their TV design work. The pair have recently invested in two High End Systems Catalyst systems from Projected Image Digital, which they have put into use on the BBC's National Lottery Jet Set programme.

The Catalyst stores video clips, graphics and animations on its hard drive, which can then be called up and manipulated as easily as a moving light, via any DMX lighting desk. Fusing the technology and ideologies of lighting and video is creating an exciting and flexible presentation medium: up to this point, lighting and projection have been treated as separate departments in television - now, lighting and video cues can be changed simultaneously and instantly from the lighting desk.

Kenyon, Charles and their Catalyst systems are in action on the current series of the BBC

UK- Many familiar faces from the lighting industry attended the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden on 10 February, for the opening of an exhibition which celebrates the life and work of the late Michael Northen. Known to many as the first lighting designer of British theatre, Northen lit over 300 productions during a distinguished career that spanned six decades. In addition to being a prolific lighting designer, he was the first LD to gain a printed credit for lighting designer in a programme.

Speakers at the event included Mark Jonathan, well-known lighting designer and manager, who represented members of The Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) - an organization Northen founded with Joe Davis and later became chairman and then president of in 1995. Also speaking was Robert Camac - Michael Northen's long-term partner whom he was with from1948 until his death in 2001, and Giles

UK - Lighting designer Dave Ross recently asked west London-based Entec Lighting to supply him with a small, high-impact lighting rig, for a UK gig by hot New York band, Scissor Sisters. The show, at London's Scala, launched the band's first album and followed up their disco reworking of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb.

Scissor Sisters are tipped for greatness in 2004, and Ross caught their eye with his work for Royksopp and by his impressive dance music CV. Wanting to capitalize on Scissor Sisters' onstage energy, and having to contend with limited stage room, no additional crew and a difficult get-in, he chose 10 James Thomas Pixelline fixtures and a PixelDrive PC-based control system as the core of the rig.

Entec supplied this, plus six Martin MAC 250s, a Wholehog II lighting console and two mirror balls - the latter specified by the band. The system - apart from the mirror
