UK - Large screen entertainment and media specialist Blink TV has taken its winning formula to the 42-date American Idol 2003 tour. This follows on from Blink's work on the UK Pop Idol tour, the first American Idol tour in 2002 and this year's German version, 'Superstar'. Blink was again working for 19 Management, creators of the 'Idol' concept, and was the only UK contractor involved in the first American Idol tour to also work on the second.

Blink Production managed the tour's live video, with hardware and a six-person crew supplied via LA-based XL Video Inc, in conjunction with their European sister companies XL Video UK and XL Belgium. UK - Autograph Sales has announced the sale of two Shure radio mic systems to the BRIT School, Britain's only state-funded school providing vocational education in the arts for 14 to 19-year-olds. Although Autograph has worked closely with the BRIT School for a number of years, this is the first sale it has made to the establishment.

One of the systems consists of five handheld U2/Beta58 mics including a spare, and two U4D dual receivers with passive splitter and active remote antennas, while the second consists of six U1 beltpack transmitters with Sennheiser MKE2 mics and three U4D dual receivers with active splitter and active remote antennas. In response to this new regulation, Action Energy has published Building Log Books - A User's Guide to provide advice on using building log books for facilities managers, building operators and energy managers. The Guide is also designed to help maintenance staff, consultants and contractors who work in a range of buildings.

UK - Pearce Hire provided the power, lighting and PA equipment to help ensure the 26th Peterborough Beer Festival was a record-breaking success. The 2003 event attracted 43,000 aficionados of real ale over the six event days, resulting in the beer festival being officially crowned as the largest in the UK.

Pearce Hire has been working at the beer festival for over 10 years. The site, managed for Pearce Hire by Steve Kane, centred around three 75m long marquees with bars running the complete length of two, serving more than 350 different real ales, ciders and bottled beers. A third marquee featured live music from different bands each evening.

This was supported by the Radio One Stage, Carling Stage, Smirnoff Experience Dance Arena, Concrete Jungle Stage and Comedy Stage. UK - The Kerrang! Awards - one of the most prestigious events in the world of rock and metal music, was this year held in the ballroom of London's Royal Lancaster Hotel. Now in its 10th year, the Awards took place in front of over 500 people, and was presented by Radio 1's Edith Bowman and Colin Murray, with guest presenters that included Jack Osbourne and The League of Gentlemen. UK - Meyer Sound's UK distributor Autograph Sales has completed the first phase of an ongoing regional Meyer Sound training programme. The free one-day training courses, taught by Meyer Sound's technical training and seminars director Mauricio Ramirez, were held at the end of August at The Helix, Dublin City University, Audio Alliance North in Manchester, B&H Sound Services in Peterborough and the National Theatre in London.

Subjects covered included phase alignment, delays, filters, line array theory and conventional loudspeaker arrays, as well as acoustic prediction and measurement techniques. Norway - Professional Sound Systems AS (PSS) has completed an installation of a Nexo GEO S Tangent Array System at the Bakkenteigen Kulturhus (Performing Arts Centre) in Horten, Norway. Following a fact-finding mission to GEO installations in Sweden, PSS set up a temporary system in the Kulturhus. During a trial period, several well-known Norwegian artists performed using the system, including Mari Boine, Vidar Busk and Bertine Zettlitz. All artists and their sound engineers declared themselves delighted, and the decision was taken to purchase and install the Nexo GEO S system.

UK / USA - HHB and Sennheiser Electronic Corporation (SEC) have reached an agreement whereby SEC will handle the distribution of all HHB professional audio products in the USA, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. This agreement goes into effect on October 1 this year, with SEC responsible for the distribution of HHB's Portadisc and Portadrive location sound recorders, CDR830 BurnIT and BurnIT Plus CD recorders and HHB Professional Recording Media, along with other new products currently in development. Distribution arrangements for HHB products in Canada remain unchanged.

USA - The Venetian Resort hotel and casino in Las Vegas has chosen Digigram Audio Manager and NCX Networked audio terminals to distribute background music over the existing Ethernet network throughout the casino. "We were looking for a system that worked operationally, allowed flexibility and was cost-effective," said Paul Vella, engineering supervisor at the Venetian Resort.

Norway - The Norwegian Theater in Oslo has taken delivery of a Visual Act Analog wagon system. The system includes two modular drive units which can power wagons of over 2000kg. The drive units are easily bolted to different constructions and will be used by the theatre both to move sets in repertory and automate scenic elements. The first use of the system will be a 9m revolve for the new musical Frendelaus by Øystein Wiik.

The system uses a dependable analogue radio system which is certified for the transportation of people. Servo-motors guarantee constant speed, independent of load, so that the motion of dancers on the Frendelaus revolve will not affect the movement of the floor.

Germany - The world premiere of Versa Lightguide was provided by CT Creative Technology Germany at the IFA in Berlin and IAA (Frankfurt Auto Show) recently. At IFA, the world's largest consumer electronics show, the revolutionary LED-based tiles featured on the Deutsche Telekom booth, in co-operation with q-bus Mediatekur, while in Frankfurt the Swedish car manufacturer SAAB used Versa Lightguide in the VIP area of its booth in Hall 8. Among several items purchased from their preferred suppliers, Marquee Audio, were two 52-channel Yamaha PM5000 desks.

A long-time customer of both Marquee and Yamaha, Wayne Barker has created a niche for himself in the industry for servicing one-off specialist projects, musical theatre tours (including Dionne Warwick and Elaine Paige), and corporate events. All this activity has necessitated he purchase of the new Yamaha desks, which he will be debuting on two upcoming West End events.

UK - A new table dancing bar in Rotherham has been fitted out with Wharfedale loudspeakers. Eight Programme 60s were supplied to Blue Minx owner Tim Naylor by Doncaster dealers Electromusic. Naylor has a long relationship with the retailer through his other venues in the town, Mazeppa Bar and Millennium Bar.

When he allocated the £200,000 necessary to refit the former Traveller's Rest, Naylor confessed he had his eyes fixed on another speaker brand. That was until he experienced a demo of the Programme 60s. "After listening to them, I realized they offered outstanding reproduction." Russia - The Kremlin in Moscow has ordered 35 BGV-C1 chain hoists in the 500kg weight class from German manufacturer ChainMaster. The lifts are equipped with a position encoder and a ChainMaster control system comprising three switch servers combined with two operation desks. Parallel redundancy is assured by the presence of an additional manual controller, also from ChainMaster.
