Hong Kong - 2012 marked the seventh year that Lighthouse was chosen as the official LED screen supplier for the annual Cathay Pacific/ HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, which sees 24 rugby teams from across the world compete for four prestigious trophies. The climax to the event saw Fiji beat New Zealand 35-28 in the final for the HK Sevens Cup, while Samoa, Kenya and Canada won the Plate, Bowl and Shield respectively.

UK - Adlib's busy specialist installation division has completed the design and installation of a new Coda Audio sound system at the BMX Centre, part of the country's National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

It follows on from the highly successful Coda system supplied by Adlib last year to the adjacent Velodrome track. Adlib was asked back by Manchester City Council, to deliver a permanent multi-purpose audio solution for the first ever permanent indoor BMX track in the UK.

The Adlib team was led by Roger Kirby and John Hughes, and overseen on site for them by Alex Burke.

Coda was specified for several reasons including continuity with the Velodrome system, and due to the positive response from the initial events. The system also offered the sonic range and dynamics demanded by the BMX Centre - which stages a whole range of events including those organised with local communit

Australia - Only a couple of months into the New Year and there have already been many high profile tours on the road with Philips Vari*Lites.

Ronan Keating toured with thirty-two VL3000 Spots and 27 VL3500 Wash supplied by Chameleon Touring Systems. Lighting designer Neil Trenell used a simple three truss rig designed to cater for a wide variety of venues from state theatres to arenas in Australia and New Zealand and to make load in and out easy due to several back to back shows.

"The VL3500 Washes are great - very, very bright and deliver a great beam effect that compliments the other lights in the rig," commented Trenell. "The VL3000 Spots are just a really nice light and you get a great gobo out of them, they're ideal for the theatre environment that we're trying to create."

The survey will track the careers of people in the industry, and the talent that has emerged from it, in order to better understand the impact that public investment in the theatre sector makes.

The aim is to collect the views of a range of theatre professionals currently or previously working in the sector, as well as those who have aspired to do so, on how their careers have developed. The wider the range of participants, the more valuable the research will be, and the more we will know about the success story of British Theatre.

Toby Alington's career in studio and live music recording goes back a long way, a very long way. From his formative years in the 1980's at the BBC and then Olympic Studios, described by the man himself as, "simply a heavenly place to be," Alington is now universally regarded as something of an iconic figure in the world of live music recording. In 2012 he has celebrated his 18th year on the BRIT Awards, his 10th on the MTV EMA's, and his 12th on the Classic BRIT Awards. Just to cap it all off he will be mixing the Diamond Jubilee event in June at Buckingham Palace and is currently working on the BBC's new Saturday night vehicle, The Voice UK, mixing all the music. Eire/UK - The Wanted's 2012 UK arena tour drew to a close in Dublin at the beginning of March and notched up another success for the boys. Audio requirements for the tour were supplied by Canegreen and SSE Audio, with Ryan McLean manning monitors and Andrew Thornton taking on both Front of House and production manager duties.

"The main reason I use Sennheiser equipment is for its sound," says Thornton, who has specified SKM 500-935 G3 for vocals, with a combination of e 904, e 901, e 906 and MKH 40 for backline. "We've tried these guys with all sorts of different microphones and the 935 sounds particularly good with their voices and gives me loads of volume before we have any feedback issues. Plus the boys like the feel, the way the microphone handles and the way it looks."

UK - XTA has launched the DS8000 - a complete re-design of their DS800 mic/line distribution system for the broadcast and touring markets.

Taking on board feedback received over the years about the DS800, the DS8000 has been re-modelled by one of the company's up and coming protégés Lewis Evans. The project was overseen by Gottelier Award winner, R&D Manager, Alex Cooper.

"Every time I work on a new mic amplifier, I learn something new and as a result people say they get even better. The DS8000 has Common Mode Rejection Ratio figures I could hardly believe - for example, a typical CMRR reading on a similar product may give 40-70 dBs whereas the DS8000 tests at a minimum of 120 dBs which is phenomenal. The reason behind this is the common mode bootstrapped input configuration, which eliminates phase errors enabling near total cancellation of common mode noise

UK - The team at Philips Selecon will be showing its latest developments in entertainment LED lighting technology at industry trade event, PLASA Focus Leeds.

Following the success of the PL1 LED spot and PL3 LED wash lights in the TV and theatre markets, the Selecon sales team reports equally positive feedback from dealers and end users to its newly launched LED products - the Studio Panel and PLCyc - at Frankfurt ProLight+ Sound 2012.

UK - Metalcore band, Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH), has invested in a compact Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system, comprising an iDR-48 MixRack and iLive-R72 Control Surface, to manage monitors on tour.

"Apart from sounding great, it was the flexibility of the iLive system which really drew me to it," comments tour manager and FOH engineer, Phil Gornell. "The band tours with full production kit but thanks to iLive we only have to carry a single rack for monitors. For one off fly shows, we are able to take our iDR rack as hand luggage and run the show using a laptop loaded with iLive Editor."

South Korea - Dai Kyung Vascom, Renkus-Heinz distributor for South Korea, recently installed a pair of Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers as part of an overall audio system upgrade for the Donam-dong Catholic church in Donam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Used for both the spoken word and music, the system was designed to improve acoustic intelligibility and musical clarity in this 400-seat local church.

Mexico - At Bicentennial Park near Silao, Mexico, a sun-drenched, open-air Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict the XVI gathered a sizable crowd that the Associated Press estimated to reach 350,000 people. To ensure everybody could hear words and music clearly and to full effect, more than 375 Meyer Sound loudspeakers converged at the site - including 268 Milo line array loudspeakers, probably the most ever deployed for any single event.

The daunting challenge of audio system design was shouldered by Rodrigo López of Mexico City-based consulting firm Zero Phase. His assignment was to provide uniform coverage across a vast, irregularly-shaped area - over a kilometer wide and a half kilometer deep - comprising uneven hillsides, sloped parking lots and open fields.

Germany - For the second year running, Robert Juliat's Prolight+Sound stand was almost entirely illuminated by LED fixtures, demonstrating how LED sources can simultaneously offer both cost and environmental benefits.

The stand centred on presenting previews of Robert Juliat's two new products, TIBO and ZEP LED profiles, which are due for release later this year.

TIBO and ZEP have evolved from the success of Robert Juliat's award-winning LED profile released at PLASA 2010. Both are the result of a redesigned light source, designed and built entirely in-house, which gives an improved CRI and higher light output.

Belgium - Barco has added a new member to its RLM family of silent three-chip DLP projectors. Similar to its smaller W6 and W8 cousins, the new RLM-W12 offers WUXGA resolution (1920x1200) combined with low operating cost and power consumption. Thanks to its standard 3D capabilities, low noise level and 11,500 lumens light output, the RLM-W12 is a perfect fit for conference auditoriums, lecture halls, infotainment applications and event venues, says the company.

Germany - Flightcase manufacturer 5 Star Cases enjoyed its busiest Prolight+Sound exhibition to date in Frankfurt, where the company showcased its latest custom designs and innovations, together with a selection of standard and classic 5 Star case ranges.

UK based 5 Star displayed another flagship VJ console, kitted out with top of the range Pioneer equipment in the form of two DVJ1000 media players hooked up to an SVM1000 AV mixer. 5 Star created two 10.4" TFT monitors in bespoke housings to match the console's CNC machined internal housing.

The two DVJs were angled to the same pitch as the SVM for flexibility and ease of operation. The system also included twin VESA type mounting arms and poles, which fitted into the rear of the main frame.
