The Awards are the only programme dedicated exclusively to the stage lighting designer's craft in the UK, and, in all likelihood, the only competition in the world where winners receive an authentic medieval battle sword - crafted in Toledo, Spain.

Neil Austin, who received his 'knighthood' for work on the London-staged musical, Parade, said: "The Knight of Illumination Awards are the gold standard. They are the only awards to honour lighting de

UK - It's not often that you contact a company to make a purchase, then 19 years later whilst sourcing replacements, find yourself dealing with exactly the same person that you dealt with all those years ago. This is exactly what happened when Northern Light in Edinburgh decided it was time to upgrade their hoists.

Initially they had bought the two GIS EM electric chain hoists from John Jones (now of LTM) back in 1992. The hoists were linked using an extended bar to allow lifting of normal loads using either hoist or long loads using both hoists together. These hoists are required to raise goods from floor level to two mezzanine levels up to 10m high. Following the original site survey, two GIS EM 500kg capacity electric chain hoists were recommended with electric travel trolleys, as they needed to have fast lifting to speed up the loading process. The hoists were delivered and

Switzerland - The city of Davos, high up in the Swiss mountains, is not only famous for hosting the World Economic Forum (WEF) but is also one of the most popular winter sports resorts in Europe. Right in the centre of the city the Vaillant Arena is among the most beautiful hockey stadiums in the world, and home of the Spengler Cup.

In 1980 the arena got its first roof (after 60 years in the open air) while over the years the audio system grew to become to a patchwork of dozens of different speakers in many different sizes, positioned in all possible corners of the roof and truss.

However, in 2009 the local audio company Phil's Concert and Showtechnique was hired to plan a new system, based around EAW components, which would replace the old hybrid.

Due to aesthetic reasons and the presence of the obligatory video cube, a central cluster was out of the question. Different dec

After assessing and comparing various equipment from different manufacturers, Mr Tikendra Singh, principal consultant of Advance Acoustic Research, recommended Tannoy VQ Series for the band.

After Mr Singh's recommendation, the Indian Territorial Army d

For this tour, in addition to the screen content, Pilot was running a back wall of 60 x LED moving lights positioned upstage of the rear section of F-30 screen.

The back screen comprised 105 panels of F-30 and in front of the DJ booth was a smaller one made up of 14 panels. With visuals flowing across both surfaces simultaneously, it became a genuine three dimensional digital set.

UK Producer and mixing engineer Bob Kraushaar has worked with some major acts over the years, including Pet Shop Boys, Elton John, Tom Jones, Gang Of Four, Gary Barlow and Paul McCartney, having begun his career alongside Trevor Horn at Sarm Studios.

He has recently been engaged on mixing Pet Shops Boys' The Most Incredible Thing ballet CD and Honey Ryder's latest album.

For nearfield monitoring he has purchased a pair of JBL LSR 4328P and matched JBL LSR4312s subwoofer from JBL resellers, Batmink following a demonstration arranged by UK distributor Sound Technology.

These had been recommended by producer Jon O'Mahony, who owns the six-room LA Sound Studios in Acton, where Kraushaar's Pro Tools studio has been based for the past seven years.

"Instead of travelling around different studios the great advantage here is that I am listening to the same sound every d

UK - From the annual conferences of political parties and major associations to awards ceremonies and corporate gatherings, Birmingham's International Conference Centre hosts around 400 different events each year. Hall 1, the venue's main space, has just had a DiGiCo SD8 console installed, ensuring that everyone from politicians to business leaders can be heard loud and clear.

Hall 1 is a tiered, 1500-capacity auditorium and previously featured an analogue mixing console working with the venue's d&b Q series PA system. When the console reached the end of its cost-effective working life a replacement was sought, with a digital console the obvious step forward.

"A major criterion for the new console was its 'walk-up friendliness'," says ICC technical event services manager Paul Dipple. "The ICC plays host to many visiting engineers that often have very limited tim

UK - Orbital Sound recently supplied the sound system for Sadler's Wells' ballet première of The Most Incredible Thing - a narrative ballet with a contemporary score written and recorded by The Pet Shop Boys. Sound design was by Olivier, Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning designer Paul Arditti, who centred the system around the d&b audiotechnik T-Series T-10 line-array.

Arditti put together the spec for a top-end system that could also cope with later plans to tour the ballet, recognising that the in-house system at Sadler's Wells would not be able to cope with the score's large dynamic range. The main system is configured with four hangs of eight T-10s, each with a T-SUB, plus a centre cluster of 10 T-10s, with the addition of four d&b Q-Subs and four B2s to boost the low end performance.

"The T-10s are awesomely compact at just 30cm wide - to the extent that when
