UK - Hari Atwal, training centre manager at the West Midlands Fire Service emailed Maltbury Staging just before Christmas. Atwal needed a lightweight but durable portable stage with a canopy and step. It had to hold five people with seats and was going to be mainly used outdoors.

Moments later she received a detailed quote from a member of Maltbury's sales team who advised that Steeldeck Ultra with a phenolic coated finish would be ideal for her requirements. The aluminium frame was chosen to keep the weight down, but the deep frame maintains a very impressive loading.

The addition of the weatherproof phenolic plywood created the solution for a portable outdoor platform. It's also non-slip and long-lasting. A customised canopy with WMFS logo completed the package and a trolley was made to transport everything efficiently.

UK - Located literally a stone's throw from London's Abbey Road studios, the church of St Mary in Kilburn has recently joined its illustrious near-neighbour in providing audio excellence, thanks to a Yamaha DME-based audio system.

Built in 1856, St Mary's is typical of Victorian churches, sporting a tall nave, side aisles and many reflective stone and wood surfaces. The resulting, highly reverberant, acoustics were fine for the first century and a half of its existence. However, nowadays people are used to high quality audio in all aspects of their lives, so Yamaha technology has been harnessed to deliver sound which meets modern expectations.

UK - Ofcom has delayed its plans to appoint a new Band Manager responsible for managing the spectrum used by the PMSE (Programme Making and Special Events) sector post the digital switchover.

Following an extensive consultation process which began in 2007, Ofcom had been due to make the appointment this spring, but earlier this year announced its intention to defer any decisions until after a third consultation. In a statement posted on the Ofcom website on 15 April, it announced that it would now fully defer any decisions until after London2012.

Austria - Sound designer Professor Wolfgang Fritz recently outfitted the Vienna Opera House with a complete AKG package in preparation for Vienna's Opernball. The package - which included the WMS4500 high-end wireless system, 19 bodypacks and various microphones - was used to support all live sound needs during the opulent promenade, and also drove the live recordings of the Opera Ball Orchestra.

Vienna's Opera Ball is one of Europe's largest and most elegant social functions, attracting some of the world's most accomplished musicians, politicians and celebrities. For the event, Fritz selected a 20-channel WMS4500 high end wireless system with 19 bodypacks and one hand-held microphone, an HC577 head-worn microphone with a unique CK77 capsule for the actors, two PT4500 with a CK77 microphone for a moveable piano, and one C414 and C391 microphone each used for the orchestra.

Germany / UK - Optocore has announced a technical cooperation with digital broadcast console manufacturers, Solid State Logic.

The news follows hot on the heels of a similar announcement by Optocore that they had entered co-operation with German console manufacturer Lawo, enabling their consoles to communicate with an Optocore I/O unit. In a joint project, a 'Lawo Emulation Mode' has been developed as part of a first joint project at the Mozarteum University, in Salzburg, Austria, enabling the Lawo mc²66 console to receive audio signals and control from the existing Optocore preamps.

In the future SSL's C10 HD and C100 HDS consoles will also be able to connect directly to the Optocore Optical Digital Network System via MADI optical fibre.

ACT Lighting Design of Brussels, Belgium was responsible for set design, lighting design, and content design. Koert Vermeulen was principal lighting designer, working alongside lighting designer Thomas Boets. Marcos Vinals was set designer and content art director, and Joris Corthout was content designer.

Belgium - When Belgian construction group Besix celebrated its 100th Anniversary, Robert Juliat followspots were present to help highlight the occasion.

The Besix Group is the largest in Belgium, and operates in construction, roads, infrastructure, environmental, concessions and property development sectors. Colombia - When Colombian rental company C Villa worked with a DiGiCo SD8 on a tour by Grammy-winning singer Carlos Vives, so impressed were the staff by its performance that it wasn't long before the company purchased one for its own inventory, adding another country to the console's world itinerary.

Vives' Front of House engineer Rob 'Cubby' Colby is a keen DiGiCo user and C Villa proprietor Mauricio Vilar Martinez felt the SD8 would be the ideal product for the company.

Germany - After an extensive test phase and a final shootout between six brands, Nationaltheater Mannheim has decided on a system from Dutch manufacturer Alcons Audio.

Specified was a system with an excellent, natural sound response, with very little compression. The old system did not have a sufficient coverage on and below the balconies.

Tonmeister Christian Stader Stader reports, "In the shootout, Alcons was for all involved in the decision, the clear overall winner. The system is in complete harmony with our room."

The eighth annual PALME Middle East 2010 was officially opened at the Dubai World Trade Centre by Engineer Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality.
