UK - Automation experts Kinesys designed and supplied the bespoke motion control system that moves and shapes the 'transforming' video screen for U2's 360° world tour.

The system consists of 40 Kinesys Evo zero-speed chain hoists and eight custom built winches, all controlled by their K2 3D software control package.

Kinesys' Dave Weatherhead comments: "This was the heaviest, most complex and interconnected system we have undertaken to date, with 48 motors following unique motion profiles to allow the deployment of over 52 tonnes of video screen."

The screen was originally conceived by Willie Williams and Mark Fisher, long term creative collaborators on U2 shows. New York based designers/architects Hoberman Associates assisted Innovative Designs in engineer

UK - Stage Electrics recently supplied Transmitta with a new L'Acoustics dv-Dosc sound system. Delivered to Transmitta one month ago, the system was immediately put into service. It has already enhanced a number of events including award ceremonies, the Kiddstock Hard Dance Festival, a James Morrison acoustic concert and is about to service the VIP arena at Oasis' home-coming shows at Heaton Park, Manchester. Stage Electrics' business development Manager Ed Gamble says: "it sounds awesome."

France - A British stage technician has become the second fatality resulting from the collapse of a stage being constructed for a Madonna concert at the Velodrome stadium in Marseilles, France. The partially-built roof fell in yesterday evening when one of four cranes lifting the roof toppled onto the structure below it.

Although eyewitnesses said the collapse happened slowly enough for some of those below to get out of the way, a 53-year-old French worker was killed outright. A number of other people were injured in the accident, some of them seriously, including a 32-year old British man who later died after undergoing emergency surgery for severe head wounds. A US citizen was also seriously injured, while around 30 people in total were treated for minor injuries and shock. French Police have begun a criminal investigation.

USA - As President Barack Obama made his marks with the graduates of 2009 at the Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium - a venue plagued by a resonance problem common in large sports venues - a suitable solution was found in Meyer Sound's SB-2 parabolic wide-range sound beams.

The task of providing intelligible audio for the historic event was handled by Phoenix-based Clearwing Productions, using two SB-2 sound beams. Clearwing's general Manager David Temby explains that the SB-2 worked well with the house PA and achieved adequate coverage without obstructing the sightlines of attendees or multiple network cameras. "Without the SB-2s, it would simply not have been possible to reach the upper corners of the seating areas," he says. "Any other solution would have called for additional delay stacks, adding significant expense and creating issues with both line-o

Macau - An Element Labs Cobra 16 LED display stopped traffic in Macau last month when the City of Dreams resort opened its doors on the evening of 1 June. The resort's extravagant opening event included, as one of its most dazzling features, a giant circular Element Labs video marquee display, using Cobra 16 technology, which was erected at the road frontage.

The opening show and activities were simulcast onto the 250sq.m LED display, prompting road users on the adjacent multi-lane highway to simply park and watch the show, drive-in-movie style. During its first month of operation, the City of Dreams resort has already attracted over 1.2 million visitors, which averages 41,000 visitors per day.

"Casino developer Melco Crown Entertainment had a clear vision for the development of the City of Dreams resort: they wanted a state-of-the-art display solution that would enhance

South Africa - Gearhouse South Africa supplied lighting, sound and video production plus crew for singer/songwriter R Kelly's first visit to South Africa.

The five days of production rehearsals at Sun City Superbowl was followed by one show there and another at Cape Town's Grand West Casino. The project was managed for Gearhouse by Michael Lewis, and their teams worked very closely with R Kelly's lighting designer Nook Schoenfeld and FOH sound engineer Rob 'Cubby' Colby.

Llewellyn Reinecke, Gearhouse Audio's systems engineer also looked after FOH. Colby specified a V-Dosc system, which was flown in Sun City as 12 elements a side for the main left and right hangs, complete with three dv-Doscs underneath for front down-fills. He also specified a 1:1 ratio for subs and V-Dosc, so the 24 subs were ground stacked three high and four wide on the floor of the Superbowl. Additional ha

UK - Il Divo are currently engaged on a world tour promoting their latest album, The Promise. Production director, Mark Ward of Proper Productions, met with Brilliant Stages in December 08 to discuss the tour's multi-faceted staging requirements before construction of the set began in January in readiness for the tour's first date in February.

The stage design involves a multi level 'necklace' stage composed of two curved arms sweeping down from a back walkway to the main promoter's stage and forward into the audience to a B stage, giving several performance areas on different levels. With so many venues on the tour, the stage dimensions and construction needed to be flexible to allow for different configurations within each venue.

Access to the main stage is via access stairs situated towards the rear, down which the four singers descend to the mid-air walkway level, a

India - Based in Bangalore, Infosys Technologies is one of the world's leading software technology companies. Chief mentor (and one of the founders), N. R. Narayana Murthy remains passionate in his quest to match and exceed the standards set by many world class organisations in their chosen fields of expertise.

With this in mind he decided to build a world class convention centre on the Infosys campus in Bangalore, which would also be capable of hosting live dance and music events (including a 60-piece symphony orchestra), theatre and international conferences. The ability to telecast and webcast these events live to all their campuses and offices worldwide was a further pre-requisite.

In addition to live performances, the 1,400 seater auditorium also had to be able to play back movies on a giant screen in both the latest 2K digital format as well as in regular 35mm, with 7.1

Europe - Neil Young returned to Europe this summer to showcase his Chrome Dreams Tour with Bandit Lites as the lighting vendor. Lighting director Marty Postma worked with an original concept by Peggy Eisenhower. Neil and his wife Peggy had input into the design and content of the visual show at a level not often achieved by artists.

Large Vegas style letters dotted the stage as if discarded from an old abandoned casino. Various antique fresnels, scoops and other such lights were strewn about in a fashion more reminiscent of a closed down back lot than a rock and roll stage set.

Production manager Tim Foster guided the production. Postma and Foster worked with Lester Cobrin in Bandits UK office to pull a wide assortment of equipment including MAC 2000 spots and washes, VL500's, BP2 Beam Projectors and Whole Hog 3 consoles and wings.

UK - Sennheiser UK was once again at the heart of the production at this year's Glastonbury Festival, as high profile performers and three major stages used Sennheiser microphones, in-ear monitors and wireless systems at the core of their audio set-ups.

All three headline acts on The Other Stage, The Prodigy, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, used a range of Sennheiser equipment, while Lily Allen, N*E*R*D and the Black Eyed Peas all shone through a weekend of changeable weather with Sennheiser's help. In addition, Sennheiser's G3 products were given their UK festival debuts when Dizzee Rascal took to the Pyramid Stage with an SKM 935 G3 and Mike Skinner of The Streets used an SKM 945 G3.

The John Peel Stage is Glastonbury's major showcase stage for emerging musical talent. The production team there employed e 935 wired mics and SKM 935 mics and EM 550 receivers for lead vocals,

Australia - Following the release of the MDR Splitters some months ago, Australian designer and manufacturer LSC Lighting Systems, has released a new version of its MDR DMX512 splitter family to cater for RJ45 connectors.

LSC's CEO Gary Pritchard comments: "After we release a product, we often get requests for variants to suit other markets. After the release of the MDR, the biggest request we received came from installers and specifiers of permanent installations where they were looking for a unit that will match the Cat5 cabling most often used in buildings these days. We had so many requests so quickly that we likewise have responded quickly. The result is the MDRJ DMX/RDM splitter."

Available in a 10-way 19" rack-mount 1RU high chassis, the MDRJ utilises the etherCon connector from Neutrik allowing all input and output connectors to terminate at the unit by
