World - Chris 'Privet' Hedge, front-of-house engineer for Simply Red's current world tour, is using a DiGiCo D5 console. This year, the tour has taken in Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Brazil, Mexico and the USA before heading for Europe, starting in Glasgow, at the end of March.

"I've used the D5 for three years now, with KT Tunstall, Mika, Alicia Keys and now Simply Red," says Hedge. "It has a very natural sound and all the artists I've used it with are primarily organic, live acts. I find the console very easy to lay out and operate intuitively; it's very much a mixer's console.

"I'm using one of Brit Row's Version 4 D5s and I use it very simply. On the current tour we have 48 mic inputs and, as well as the onboard FX, I have four engines of TC6000 and an SPX990 plumbed into it. The only external inserts are an Avalon 737 on the lead vocal and

USA - Hippotizer media servers delivered a variety of visual effects for the 81st Academy Awards Show, broadcast in February. The Hippotizer content delivery system was specified by designer Bob Dickinson and media programmer Jason Rudolph. VER supported the application, with Matt Waters as lead engineer.

Three active Hippotizer HD units were used within a networked system. One Hippotizer HD was used for pixel-mapping 1,036 Color Kinetics iColor Cove LED strips embedded in the stage floor. Alternating sunburst and other patterns created stunning effects for overhead shots. Two additional Hippotizer HDs drove hundreds of 1m length Element Labs Versa Tubes, which were used in every set-piece of the show and around the venue; mounted on the projection screen surrounds, orchestra band carts, audience handrails and the 'chandeliers' which were a striking visual feature of the show.

Cyprus - Audio-visual facility City Studios has moved into a new, purpose-built complex consisting of five dubbing suites, a video suite and the largest music production studio in Cyprus. In line with the expansion, the 20-year-old facility has updated with state of the art equipment including a large inventory of DPA microphones.

The new studio, which opened at the beginning of 2009, has already worked on the Eurovision entry for Cyprus, several tracks for the Greek X Factor and mixes for LTV.

USA - With a membership of over 6,000 worshippers, Saint Philip A.M.E. Church in Atlanta has maintained a policy of keeping the audio-video needs up to date. Aided by Atlanta design/installation firm Communications & Entertainment, the church has installed an Allen & Heath iLive-176 at Front of House of the 2,500 seat main Sanctuary and an iLive-80 in the Broadcast room.

"When we were commissioned to redo the sanctuary sound and video systems, their analogue console was approaching 10 years old," notes systems consultant Dave Miller of CEI. "In a digital world, it's my opinion that you have to be very careful in the selection of a desk. When you're working with a volunteer church staff, it can make or break the whole project. Fortunately, Saint Philip has a very talented staff, and the perfect console was chosen."

UK/USA - Lancashire water specialist Water Sculptures has installed the dramatic rain effect system for the stage production of Mary Stuart which opens this week on Broadway, New York. The creative team at Water Sculptures also provided the same water spectacle for the Mary Stuart London performances at the Donmar Warhouse and The Apollo Theatre.

Director William Elliot spent seven days working with the Broadway theatre's production team in New York, creating the water system and training the theatre's crew. He says: "We knew what was required and were able to replicate what we'd done for the West End production in 2005. For us it was a straightforward job, and working with the US production team has been a great experience."

Some 2.5 tonnes of water are stored in tanks above the stage and heated to a temperature of 40 degrees before being turned into a

The Netherlands - The concert hall of the ArtEZ conservatory in the Dutch city Arnhem has been supplied with a new Sound Projects DreamLine sound system. The installation was provided by the Arnhem-based Live Music.

ArtEZ originated in 2002 through a merger of the Art Universities of Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle. The ArtEZ conservatory, with more than 900 students and 260 teachers is one of the larger Dutch conservatories. ArtEZ has worked with Live Music as contractor for years and had chosen Sound Projects systems as reinforcement for different auditoria.

The new DreamLines are being flown and the additional subs are concealed under the stage so the concert hall appears to be more open. Live Music MD Bart Smits comments: "The slim DreamLines give more than enough coverage/dispersion and SPL. And with the additional two SP2-15 subs that are being built in the stage, you g

USA/Belgium - The New York Metropolitan Opera - the legendary 'Met' - is celebrating its 125th anniversary season. It's also the first opera house in North America to purchase the new WARP Daylight 575W Zoom Profile Spotlight from ADB Lighting.

The Metropolitan Opera chose the ADB WARP Daylight for its combination of exceptional brightness, beam quality, silent operation and ADB's patented, individual, 360° ring control of focus, zoom, iris, gobos and shutters. The choice was made after a competitive 'shoot-out' with other manufacturers' profile spotlights.

The latest in ADB's WARP family, the WARP 575W Daylight is designed to save energy, space, weight and cost with the brightest daylight beam on the market. Its unique optical design, and G22 axial discharge 6000K lamp, create a beam output of up to 14,500 lux at 10 m/10° - comparable output to a conventional 2.5kW Da

USA - Elation Professional's new Design Beam 1200C CMY moving head can perform as either a spot, wash or long throw beam projector. Although it boasts a 1200W output, it's housed in a compact case more typical of a 575W fixture, so it can be installed in tight spaces and is very convenient to transport on tours and traveling productions, the company says.

"We developed the Design Beam 1200C to be a complete 1200W DMX moving head that meets the demands of today's lighting market and challenging economy," says Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. "People are looking for ever more powerful, yet smaller fixtures. Today's designers and clients also want versatility and value, and the Design Beam 1200C delivers with its ability to do triple-duty as a wash, spot or beam projector. This multi-functionality makes the Design Beam 1200C especially great f

PEL was asked to design and install a system initially for McDonald's London Victoria restaurant which was the first to be kitted out as part of the high spec refurb. The existing sound system hadn't been changed since 1999, but t

UK - Clay Paky presented some of its most recent and innovative products to an audience of professionals - lighting designers, directors of photography, rental managers, production managers, dealers and the trade press - at London's Royal Albert Hall last month. The demonstration included the new Alpha Beam 1500 moving beam lights, as well as Alpha Beam 300s and the long-throw Alpha Wash 1500 LT wash light.

The presentation consisted of a live show and a technical demonstration. The live part was performed by Durham Marenghi on the rig he put together for Raymond Gubbay's bi-annual Classical Spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall, an event which combines traditional classical music with a modern lighting show.

The Alpha Beam 1500, Alpha Beam 300 and Alpha Wash 1500 LT were used together for the first time at the Classical Spectacular. Durham Marenghi said: "Th

USA - A new iPhone application by Wybron packs more than 1,500 gobos into a sleek device that fits in the user's pocket. The Moiré Gobo Library lets users browse, search, and experiment with A-size gobos from GAM and Lee, with more to come.

The Moiré Gobo Library, which also works on the iPod touch, lets the user: view gobos on a white or black background, simulating the look of the gobo itself or the image it produces on a dark stage; search gobos by name and number; sort gobos by name and number in ascending and descending order; maintain a list of 12 most recently viewed gobos, and send comments directly to the developer with a feedback button.

The idea for the Moiré Gobo Library came, in part, from the suggestions of customers using Wybron's Gel Swatch Library, which features nearly 1,000 gel colours. The Gel Swatch Library was recently named one of

UK - Elstree Light & Power was contracted to set up the lighting for three television programmes which were recorded over a period of 10 days from Cymru in Llandudno, Wales. These programmes were Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol (a communal hymn singing program), Can I Gymru (Song For Wales) and a Rhydian concert. Can I Gymru was televised on the evening of 1 March to coincide with St David's day.

The lighting fixtures chosen for all the shows were MAC 700s and MAC TW1s. The Martin lights used for Can I Gymru in particular were MAC 700 Profiles, MAC TW1, the new MAC III and LC Panels.

The LC panels were an important part of the whole set and ELP, working closely with set designer Phil Williams, designed a rigging system that enabled them to create two 4m x 2m sliding doors from LC panels with a rear wall of six screens in a 4 x 3 configuration.

UK - Entertainment lighting supplier White Light has announced the release of the White Light Green Guide, available now from the company's website.

Intended as a starter guide for those wanting to make their work in lighting shows have as little impact on the environment as possible, the Green Guide offers suggestions for each phase of the process of show lighting, from initial meetings and planning through rig design, set-up and focus, show running, touring and final load-out.

"Many of the suggestions in our Green Guide are largely common sense," comments White Light's managing director, Bryan Raven, "but it's often the obvious things that get overlooked when it comes to putting a show together, particularly in the final hectic days of tech when the old mantra of 'the show must go on' tends to win out over everything else. We hope that by

Germany - G-LEC, the Ötigheim, Germany-based manufacturer of transparent LED video screen products for the events and architectural markets, has gone into administration, Lighting&Sound International has learned.

Company founder and managing director Lars Wolf explained to L&SI that a mis-allocation of assets by an external agency had given a false impression of the company's position at the end of 2008; when the error came to light, a rescue package was agreed with the company's bank. However, two consecutive months of poor trading in January and February put an end to Wolf's hopes of trading through the crisis, and he took the decision to put the company into administration.

Speaking to L&SI at the ProLight&Sound exhibition in Frankfurt, where some of the costs of the G LEC stand were met by friends and supporters, Wolf said the German authorities are satisfied that he had
