UK - Stage Electrics co-founder Maurice Marshal has been awarded an MBE in this year's Queen's New Year's Honours List. The MBE, awarded to Marshal for his outstanding and dedicated service to drama, comes after a lifetime of dedication to an industry for which he has always had great passion.

After completing three years in the army as a tank mechanic, Marshal moved into theatre and has worked for much of the last 40 years as chief electrician for the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. Maurice has been committed to training new entrants to the industry for numerous years and many of today's top lighting designers and technicians have benefited from his tutelage.

USA - Audio-Technica has been selected as the official headphone supplier for the recently-opened Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. More than 60 pairs of ATH-M30 Closed-back Dynamic Stereo Monitor Headphones have been selected for use in the museum's exhibits.

The 30,000sq.ft facility celebrated its grand opening with a slate of activities last month, the culmination of The Recording Academy's and the Grammy Awards' milestone 50th anniversary year.

UK - Stage Electrics started 2009 in style by lighting the London Eye as part of the Marking Midnight celebrations, broadcast live on BBC 1. An estimated half a million New Year revellers braved freezing conditions in the capital to see in the New Year lighting and fireworks extravaganza on the banks of the River Thames.

This is the fourth year Stage Electrics has worked on behalf of the Greater London Authority to mark the New Year. Stage Electrics supplied MAC 2000 Wash moving lights in each of the 32 pods of the London Eye, search lights on floating pontoons (eight each side) and a wireless DMX control system. Lighting designer for the event was Durham Marenghi, who has previously worked on the lighting of the London Eye at New Year.

Spain - A ground-breaking experimental project conceived by artist Matthew Ritchie, The Morning Line is a fresh take on the concept of the architectural pavilion, offering a platform for musicians and artists whose work lies beyond normal artistic boundaries and the programming of traditional concert halls. Commissioned by Vienna-based Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary and with equipment support provided by Meyer Sound, The Morning Line is currently being inaugurated at the third international biennial of contemporary art (Biacs3) in Seville, Spain.

France - i-Pix's BB4 LED wash fixture won an award for technical innovation at the 2008 SIEL Exhibition in Paris. The BB4 was entered into the 'Stage & Studio' category by i-Pix French distributor, Paris-based JC Lampes.

The Awards were judged by a panel of 12 industry experts, including Julien Pavillard, artistic director for Lyon's festival of light. They closely examined each nominated product, before conferring and making their final decisions.

The BB4 was selected as the winner for its intensity, colour mixing capabilities and its homogenised lightsource - all three qualities impressed the judges.

Since taking on the i-Pix distributorship in September, JC Lampes has already experienced great interest in the i-Pix range, which has also been boosted by winning the award.

UK - HD Promotions recently promoted Gatecrasher at Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone. Gravesend Sound & Light installed the lights for the event which was exclusively Martin professional lighting.This consisted of four LC Panels, 24 MAC 250 Kryptons, four MAC 600s, four MAC 500s, four MAC 550s all controlled with a Martin LightJockey.

Eurovision Update - Andrew Lloyd Webber has unveiled the six hopefuls he has chosen to bid for glory at the Eurovision Song Contest. Two male soloists, two female singers, a duo consisting of twin sisters and an all-male quintet will do battle in the BBC One show Your Country Needs You. Lloyd Webber will write the song for the successful act, set to take part in May's competition in Moscow. After a series of live shows, the winning act, which is chosen by the public, will be revealed on 31 January. The first live programme takes place on Saturday 10 January on BBC One.

USA - The Joint Training Initiative of The ESTA Foundation and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) has announced a Control Protocols Workshop to be held two days prior to the annual USITT National Conference in Cincinnati, OH. The registration deadline is 9 March 2009.

This two-day course is designed for entertainment technicians at a basic to intermediate level. The session will be held 16 and 17 March at the Duke Energy Convention Centre. Training will cover current control protocols including Remote Device Management over USITT DMX512-A and Architecture for Control Networks. This course qualifies for ETCP Certification Renewal Credits for ETCP Certified Entertainment Electricians.

UK - Stage Electrics has specified and installed a new RSS M-400 V-Mixing System into The Byre Theatre in St. Andrews, Scotland. The RSS digital console and two snakes are part of a package of kit supplied this year, which includes Sennheiser radio microphones and RCF monitor speakers.

As its name suggests, The Byre Theatre started life as a semi-derelict cow-shed, cleaned out and set up by a local theatre group, whose audiences sat on cushions on the floor. With the support of donations and local authority funds, a permanent theatre opened in 1970. Its latest incarnation, built by architects Nicoll Russell Studios of Broughty Ferry, was completed in 2001.

South Africa - Lighting designer Tim Dunn used 12 Robe DigitalSpot 7000DT digital moving lights and 32 REDWash 3-192s in his design for the 2008 Miss World Pageant, which was held at the Sandton International Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.

To date, this is the most of either type of Robe's new generation of digital moving lights to be used on a single show.

When Gearhouse South Africa won the contract to supply full technical production for Miss World and Dunn was asked to design lighting and visuals for the show, the opportunity also presented itself for him to incorporate some of the new Robe fixtures in his design.

He worked closely with set designer Dewet Meyer to develop a big visual picture that stamped a contemporary African flavour on the performance space. The resulting elegant 40m wide, multi layered spherical set was based on an African jewel and

Japan - Martin Professional Exterior Series luminaires are being used to dynamically illuminate the restaurant facade and outdoor garden at the Four Seasons Hotel in the Tokyo area of Chinzan-so. Chinzan-so is a Japanese garden and restaurant located in an historical and scenic area of the city.

On 1 November 2008, in collaboration with the Garden's landscape gardener, an illumination programme, Garden Play with Light commenced. Two concepts define this Japanese style of illumination: 'Static Vision' in which the Garden radiates a dreamy atmosphere, and 'Dynamic Vision', a series of colour changing programmes that shift with the season. Some programmes are synchronised to music and offered as an optional service to customers on special occasions like weddings or birthdays.

UK - For the first time in the UK, G-LEC is to open a dedicated sales office. Based in central London, G-LEC UK will manage all sales for architectural and other installations, as well as supporting G-LEC's UK rental partners.

Until now, rental projects have been the focus of G-LEC's business in the UK, but Lars Wolf, managing director of G-LEC Europe, wants to begin to put more emphasis on the company's new architectural products, saying, "Chimera, which we launched at PLASA this year, is a strong product for us. We already have 700sq.m installed in the BMW Museum in Munich, and we are getting a lot of enquiries. We need a full time sales office in England and, as we have other partner companies in Europe and the Americas, it made sense to form G-LEC UK."

UK - Recognising that periods of economic hardship puts more pressure on charities, big and small, ETC has brought forward its promised donation for 2009, to double the amount of money it is giving to Light Relief this year.

At the 2008 ETC/ABTT Christmas party, held at Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 15 December 15, Light Relief Trustee John Simpson accepted a cheque for £5,000 from ETC's general manager, Matthew Brookfield - part of a £12,500 commitment made this time last year. Thanking ETC for its continuing generous support, Simpson, who is also chairman of White Light, said: "There is no doubt that the economic downturn will affect our industry, magnifying the problems that can be triggered by illness or injury. While Light Relief's funds cannot be used as unemployment benefit, I am sure that the calls on our resources will increase in 2009."

XL Events' Rich Rowley says: "This is the fourth year that I have been involved in this project and every year brings a new set of challenges. This year we were looking at big rear projected images with the addition of a 'lifesize' giraffe and elephant to contend with. As you can imagine some pretty creative keystoning was needed to allow the beasts to move around backstage."

Italy - A Milos M950 trussing system has been permanently installed into the newly revamped FuturShow Station venue in Casalecchio di Reno near Bologna.

The building is under new management of the Sabatini Group and home to the Virtus Bologna A Series basketball team, who play all their home games there. The Sabatini Group also plans to expand the general use of the venue - which can hold up to 13000 people using mobile grandstands - to host major concerts, shows, conferences and other live sporting events. This necessitated the need for a flexible all-purpose trussing system from which to hang sound, lighting and AV equipment.

As this was such a high profile project, Bologna-based Decima Italia designed, supplied and installed the three trussing grids themselves. The main one measures 22 x 20m and has a weight loading of 40 tons, while the two side grids each measure 12 by 4

UAE - ORB, the fully mechanised LED globe, has caught the attention of the Middle East. It is now in the hands of set and stage rental company, IBS Decor LLC, which has secured the exclusive sales and rental agreement for the region.

"Although we only took delivery of the ORB very recently, we have already arranged for it to be used at the closing ceremony of Dubai Film Festival and at the Shakira concert in Abu Dhabi," says Nick de Fay, sales manager LED Products for IBS Decor.

"We feel the potential in this market for ORB is excellent," he continues. "In addition to Dubai Shopping Festival and Summer Surprises, the region hosts a large volume of concerts, exhibitions, promotions and corporate events. There is a high demand for sponsorship for these events and this is where we see ORB coming into its own.

USA - Strand Lighting has announced the opening of a new office in Manhattan to serve the New York market. At the same time, the company has announced the appointment of Phil Folene to direct customer support in the city.
