UK - An entire walk through experience for international brand, Hitachi provided Stage One with their latest logistical challenge. This extensive scenic build contract for their client, The Liquid Way, involved the total fitting out and masking of the QE2 Centre's third floor, to create eight distinct areas.

The walk through experience was entitled Inspire Life 2008 and was attended by top business executives, MEP's and Government representatives, amongst others. Products from across Hitachi's entire range were exhibited through the area.

"We had several challenges to contend with," said Simon Wood, sales director, Stage One. "Both of which are hardly unique; the first being access and the second, time. However, we worked hard to overcome both and delivered

Germany - Sennheiser is looking for a sound logo - a short audio signature that will be instantly recognisable as the sound of Sennheiser. Musicians, composers, sound designers and creative minds are invited to take part between now and 17 July, 2008. The very best ideas will be rewarded with prizes, including 5,000 Euros for the overall winner, who will be announced at the beginning of September, says the company.

From now until 17 July, proposals for sound logos can be uploaded directly onto the website below. Each entrant can upload a maximum of five tracks in MP3 format (stereo, 128, 192or 256kb/s, max 10MB). There is no optimum length for a sound logo, but audio tracks definitely shouldn't be any longer than eight seconds.

In August, 30 finalists will be chosen from all the submissions. At the end of the month, these thirty tracks will be placed before the public in an on

USA - More than a year after its completion, Milton High School's new football stadium finally sounds as good as it looks. Located in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, the stadium sports a high-end turf field and JumboTron screen, but until recently it had been plagued by a poorly designed and underpowered sound system.

"The sound was loud, but pretty much unintelligible," explains Mike Shetler of Atlanta-based VisionQuest Design and Production. "People in the stands couldn't really make out what was being said, but the school was getting plenty of complaints from the neighbours."

In fact, says Shetler, it ended up becoming a safety issue. "The night of their first home football game of 2007, they needed to evacuate the stadium due to a lightning storm, but the sound was so bad the crowd couldn't understand the announcement."

Italy - FaitalPRO has launched a raft of new designs including two horns, five compression drivers, three 18" woofers and two mid-woofers.

The WG101 and the STH100 horns are both produced in die cast aluminium alloy. The smaller model, the WG101, has been designed for line array applications, as it allows for assembly in a reduced space and a certain directional adaptability. Completed with an anthracite black protective finish, they can be used on all 1" FaitalPRO drivers; increasing high frequency diffusion efficiency and ensuring accurate direction control, says the company.

With a diameter of only 85mm and a weight of 1,1kg, the new HF10TX compression driver has a sensitivity of 108dB, a maximum power capacity of 120W and continuous 60W on 8Ohm.

The new compact compression driver for the high frequency HF100 model, displays a dome shaped PEN plastic membrane, 2

Switzerland - With ten chart-topping albums and sales of over two million records worldwide, Gotthard has long been one of Switzerland's most successful hard rock bands.

The five-piece band is currently in the midst of an 80-city European tour in support of their latest release, Domino Effect, playing to packed halls and arenas through a Meyer Sound system courtesy of Hanover, Germany-based Rocksound Management.

The sound system comprises left and right arrays of 12 M'elodie line array loudspeakers each, with powerful bass provided by two 600-HP subwoofers per side. On stage, four MJF-212A stage monitors handle the band's monitoring.

Lothar Strunk of Rocksound comments: "The M'elodie's output is truly exceptional for such a small cabinet. It's powerful, but also delivers great intelligibility. And the small size makes it very easy to handle as well."

Canada - PA Plus Productions (Toronto) deployed a Midas XL8 digital live performance system for this year's Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame Awards. Held on M arch at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the 2008 show honoured, among others, Paul Anka, with five of his songs inducted. A radio broadcast of the show aired the next day; the television broadcast went out on 3 March.

John Lacina of PA Plus, who mixed the music portion of the show, reports, "The XL8 sounds, feels, and behaves like an analogue Midas, but with huge digital processing power. I noticed a marked improvement right from the start in the sound quality over other digital products I have used. The XL8 lived up to the hype, so to speak, in that it does not sound digital at all. In this sense the stellar onboard EQ and Dynamics can be used to fine tune, rather than outright fix, the sound, sometimes encountere

UK - The introduction of the Digidesign Mix Rack at the recent Winter NAMM Show has had an immediate impact on both the rental and medium install market, says the manufacturer. Now available in Europe, this new hardware option for the Venue live sound environment combines all stage, local audio I/O, and DSP into a single, compact 11-space rack.

In the UK, Wigwam Acoustics ordered nine Mix Racks, which will be divided between hire stock and resale. The company's hire director, Chris Hill, says, "With all the DSP and I/O in one rack, this is a product that we expect to do really well. A lot of customers will be first time users, while hire companies will note other economies, such as the ease of transport, since they can use existing multicores."

Following its initial purchase, Wigwam ordered another six Mix Racks to boost the hire stock, and anticipate firm orders for

France - Théâtre National de Bretagne in Rennes is renowned throughout France for its varied and bold presentations. Home to the European Centre of Theatre and Dance Production, the theatre recently received a thorough renovation completed in December by a dynamic lighting scheme for the theatre's facade.

The city of Rennes sought to animate the front of the building in order to 'announce' the various activities going on inside the theatre. Lighting designer for the exterior illumination was Jean-François Touchard who, with his design team, worked directly with the city on the concept's details.

Touchard proposed an eight-hour per day lighting programme, from 5pm to 1am, in five phases: evening, theatre and cinema opening, beginning of play, during play, and, afterwards, when only the bar and restaurant is open.

"In the beginning, we wanted to light the buildin

This week's many news stories and reports reflect the breadth and global reach of our industries. On the installation front, there is news of Klotz Digital's work in the White House, a major Nexo install in Stockholm's Grand Hotel and much else besides. The trend towards improved audio in cinemas continues with the opening of the 10-screen Arcadia Multiplex in Bellinzago in Lombardy, complete with impressive EV-based sound systems, while sports stadia are also realising the benefits of quality sound and light installs: the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland is the latest example.

While on matters sporting, the Beijing Olympics are fast approaching. The torch has been lit and is now on its way round the world. Politics and boycotts permitting, the Games will no doubt provide a fine showcase for manufacturers and integrators who are also already casting their eyes towards the London Olymp
