UK - Arena Structures, part of the Arena Group, installed its Tensioned Fabric Structure (TFS) at Wembley Arena this year, to act as a temporary concert venue during the Wembley Arena refurbishment.

The 10,000-seater semi-permanent venue, designed and built by Arena Structures to Wembley's specifications was the first of its kind built in the UK. The venue had to comply with stringent permanent building regulations in order to deliver a temporary facility with the feel of a permanent venue, which could act as a music arena.

The TFS was adapted to ensure that all of the facilities required to host concerts were available, with Arena Structures incorporating additional structures alongside the main TFS to house toilets, concessions, bars and other concert facilities. All of these structures were placed on a specially designed platform, constructed using 18 miles of scaffolding.<

L-Acoustics showed two self-powered two-way coaxial loudspeakers, the 108P and 112P, first seen at AES in New York last Autumn (see L&SI November 2005). Both combine the advantages of L Acoustics' proven coaxial point source technology with the convenience of self-powered performance and on-board digital signal processing.

Both 108P and 112P systems continue the proven coaxial technology lineage of L-Acoustics and the end result is natural, studio monitor-quality sound that is ideal for nearfield monitoring, proximity fill use, and small-to-medium-sized FOH applications.

UK - One of the leading European manufacturers in the market, 5 Star is constantly outputting a miscellany of flightcases of all shapes, sizes, colours and descriptions for all sorts of functions. Based in the Fens, in Wisbech, 5 Star always had roots in Cambridgeshire.

The original company dates back to the early 1980s, when it was engaged primarily in making musical instrument cases. In 1989, it was acquired by industrial foam conversion specialist Flexiplas, and current MD Jim Willis set out to broaden 5 Star's horizons to expand beyond its music business base. Clients from the Industrial sector soon came on board, including Rolls Royce, Racal and Sony Broadcast.

In 1991 Keith Sykes, the current works director and MD designate, joined the company as production manager following the acquisition of Ipswich-based Pro-Tect Cases. The purchase brought an impressive contacts book

New on the Artistic Licence stand was Pixi-Flex, a flexible component for pixelated lighting effects, consisting of 16 individual pixels moulded onto a cable. Pixi-Flex is perfect for creating pixilated walls of light, similar to video walls, the difference being that Pixi-Flex can make three-dimensional shapes. Wayne Howell MD said that advance orders for this product had been huge.

UK - Daveid Phillips was appointed head of music at KOKO, a few months after the former Camden Palace, beautifully restored to its original Edwardian grandeur by new owners The Mint Group, reopened its doors (see L&SI November 2004). Having had considerable expense lavished on its restoration and refurbishment, Phillips' arrival ensured the rapid success of the venue within a year that saw performances by the likes of Madonna, Coldplay, and Roxy Music.

Having worked for the Mean Fiddler Organisation since the age of 19, and been head of music there for over a decade, Phillips wasn't even sure he wanted to take on another venue, until he walked into it. "They had given it a multi-million pound rebirth, and rediscovered this beautiful turn-of-the-century theatre. It rose phoenix-like from the ashes of Camden Palace, which had really fallen into disrepair," he explains. &

The 24th edition of Siel took place at the Porte de Versailles, Paris, from 12-15 February. After the show, the organisers reported an (unaudited) record attendance of 29,825 visitors - an increase of 5.5% over 2005, with 5% of the visitors travelling from abroad to attend the show.

Clay Paky had plenty on show. The Alpha Wash 1200 is the most powerful washlight in the Alpha family. The optical system uses uniform CMY colour mixing that, together with a color wheel, with linear CTO and with a CTB filter, allows every chromatic combination to be obtained.

The extraordinary luminosity of the Alpha Spot HPE 1200 (see Technical Focus, L&SI February 2006) is guaranteed by the combination of a top performance optical unit and a 1200W discharge lamp. Features include a 10°- 40° linear zoom, a newly designed effects section and a full colour system.

The Alpha Spot 1200 is a 1200W effects projector with a 15° - 40° linear zoom, colour mixing, graphic system with 14 gobos and animation disc. The Alpha Spot 700 is a 700W effects projector which offers a remarkable price/performance ratio and brightness. The Alpha Wash 575 TH is a washlight offering a 'Top H

Entech, Australia's major entertainment technology trade show, made its biennial appearance in mid-February at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Exhibitors occupied more floor space than at the 2004 show, although there were fewer large stands and fewer exhibitors from the lighting and sound industry. Several of the first-time exhibitors were from the audio-visual and rigging/lifting/height safety industries - areas not previously well represented at Entech.

Despite the increase in availability of budget domestic air fares, there was a noticeable absence of visitors from the more distant states of Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Although raw visitor numbers may have been down on those claimed at previous Entech shows, the consensus amongst exhibitors was that they were very pleased with the visitors that came to their stands.

On the TMB stand, the digital festoon system and the Falcon range (including high-powered xenon searchlights, architectural and LED floodlights) were on display. TMB was also exhibiting the Pharos control system, which offers an all-in-one solution for the control of entertainment and LED lighting for architectural installations. The latest version of Designer software is also available for OS-X platforms and includes support for a variety of expansion modules for additional protocols and interfaces.

Tryka L.E.D. introduced several new LED luminaires, drivers and controllers at this year's show. The enhanced MR16-size Module 3 and Module 6 were unveiled, as well as the new AR111-size Module 12, marking the launch of the Tryka Easy-Link System. The powerful Module 36 has also been redesigned and is now supplied as standard in an IP67 version. The new Intelligent Drive Systems IDS-4 and IDS-12, first seen at PLASA '05, were also on display.

UK - This is the second X Factor tour, and builds on the success of last year with a greatly expanded itinerary featuring a full month of sold-out UK arenas. Bandit's project manager Lester Cobrin comments: "The TV show pulled in over 10 million viewers each week, so it was no surprise that the demand for tickets on this tour would exceed last year - hence the 100% increase in the number of shows."

In designing the show, lighting director and programmer Arturo Ollandini collaborated closely with lighting and set designer Peter Barnes and show producer Tim Byrne. This year, the tour features the exceptionally strong line-up of the final eight contestants - including winner Shayne Ward and runners-up Andy Abraham and Journey South. A troupe of dancers adds a further dynamic to the production.

It's been five years since the last additions, but Rosco have introduced 15 new colours to the Supergel range (including more saturated blues, blue-greens, lavenders) and one diffusion. Since the acquisition of DHA, Rosco were promoting the X-Effects 3D projector, with dowser and DMX module.

Although it's unusual to see products from European and North American manufacturers making their debut at a regional show, the time slot meant that several products seen in prototype at PLASA and LDI were first seen in their production versions at Entech. Bytecraft Entertainment displayed the first example of Strand Lighting's new Wallrack 24 x 2.5kW passively-cooled installation dimmer, while Jands Electronics showed the first production models of ETC's Source Four 70° and 90° spots, Vari*Lite's VL500D 1kW dimmable tungsten and VL500A 575W short arc versions, and Chroma-Q's ColorWeb.

ACDC, designer and manufacturer of specialist cold cathode and LED lighting systems, launched several new products including Genesis, a new 12V track system; Mirage, a colour changing cove light; and Odyssey, a robust reading / display light.

The Revolution series was the big news on the Dynalite stand, offering control panels available in a variety of finishes and offering unlimited décor matching possibilities.

Dial's first time at Arc, the latest version of DIALux software is available for the planning and design of lighting. Available free of charge, it can be used with the luminaires of any manufacturer and is suitable for a simple calculation now and again, or to produce photorealistic visualization.

UK - Zero 88's Chilli Pro dimmers continue to make their mark in the multi-purpose venue installations, having been chosen for another new facility - the purpose-built theatre at the Mary Hare School in Newbury, Berkshire, which is the National Grammar School for profoundly deaf children.

Lancelyn Theatre Supplies, responsible for designing and installing the auditorium lighting system, had specific criteria to adhere to. Project manager Jim Butler explains: "The auditorium needs to be used as a professional theatrical venue, an amateur theatrical venue, a school theatrical venue, a professional conference facility, a school assembly hall and a school exam venue. With this mix taken into consideration, the multi-purpose facility requires various levels of lighting, which has to be fully functional and easily controlled."

With home markets that vary between negligible and non-existent, many Australian and New Zealand entertainment technology manufacturers have no choice but to export their products to recover development costs. For them, Entech is an opportunity to show the folks at home what they will be releasing to the rest of the world in the coming months.

ARX continues to produce interesting solutions to audio problems. New products on show included the AVstream, a two-zone audio mixer that simultaneously switches both audio and video sources to each zone, and the AV-DI, an addition to their Audibox range, designed to deal with the unbalanced stereo input from a PC sound card or consumer AV equipment. Also on show were the iSwitch, a stereo line-level switcher that routes one of two inputs to any one of12 outputs and the DI-Pre, another addition to the Audibox range that provides a single-channel
