UK - International dance music magazine iDJ has announced what it calls "the biggest interactive DJ show to ever take place in the UK". Aimed at producers, VJs, promoters, and DJs of the bedroom or professional varieties, iDJ Live 05 will fill two halls at the Wembley Complex into the "ultimate DJ and dance music paradise" on 3-4 June, say the organizers.

The event will combine music from dance music's superstar DJs, industry workshops, a record fair and a main exhibition showcasing the latest DJ equipment from the market's leading brands. Visitors will be able to try out the latest DJ technology and sound and light systems.

UK - Once again it was standing room only at some of the five seminars during this year's ISCEx 2005 event in Watford Tuesday 22 February, according to the event's organizers, the Institute of Sound and Communication Engieneers (ISCE). The 23 specialist companies exhibiting their latest products and services reported good business from around 200 visitors, say the organizers, who also reveal that ISCEx 2006 is already planned for 28 February 2006.

USA - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) - the organization which awards the famous Oscars each year - plays a much wider role in the day-to-day workings of Hollywood. As a large organization holding many meetings and conferences, the Academy recently undertook an expansion and modernization of its main Los Angeles conference room, which includes the installation of Sennheiser' ME36 condenser microphone.

Los Angeles-based Offenhauser/Mekeel Architects oversaw the redesign of the AMPAS room, and Warner Constructors, the firm behind many of Disney's theme parks, spearheaded construction. UK - Following the release of Stardraw Control Beta 1 last month, software provider Stardraw.com has announced the public availability of Stardraw Control Beta 2 with immediate effect, prior to its formal launch scheduled for NSCA next month. A community of nearly 600 systems specialists was involved in the Beta 1 test phase and further participants in the Beta 2 test phase are similarly invited. Stardraw Control Beta 2 offers enhanced stability and applicability over the first Beta version, which was developed on the Microsoft.net v2 platform, which is itself still in the beta testing stage. As there is no firm release date for MS.net framework v2, Stardraw has released Stardraw Control Beta 2 on MS.net v1.1, the current release version. UK - The official opening of Shearer's Bar at Newcastle United's St James Park ground on 12 February was marked in grand Geordie style with guitar legend Mark Knopfler, with fellow Dire Straits member Alan Clark on keyboards, played a live version of Knopfler's 'Local Hero' film theme to a very enthusiastic home crowd. The 'Local Hero' connection comes from the fact that the song is played at every Newcastle United home game as the players take to the pitch. The IPv6 Appli-Contest was started in 2003 with the aim of bringing to light a variety of new ideas and needs that will arise as the Internet Protocol Version 6 (known as IPv6) takes its place in the networked society of tomorrow. USA - The latest move in the ongoing LED patent dispute between Super Vision Inc and Color Kinetics Inc was the filing this week by Super Vision of a motion for summary judgement against Color Kinetics. The motion, which includes nine affidavits from witnesses against Color Kinetics, alleges that the founders of Color Kinetics, George Mueller and Ihor Llys, were aware of the existence of prior art relating to their LED products before they filed their own patent applications. Among the nine witnesses against the company is Jerry Laidman, the Nevada-based lighting innovator who created the Saturn colour-changing LED effects in the late 1970s, and of whose products Mueller and Llys were allegedly aware (see L&SI November 2004 to read more on the background to the controversy). UK - To celebrate its 25th year in business, Walthamstow-based specialist lighting manufacturer Light Engineering is organizing an unusual prize draw: 5,000 of their customers have been invited to enter to win a giant 30" mirror ball, which includes around 27,500 individual mirror pieces. However, before the draw takes place, the mirrorball is going on a remarkable 1,000 mile charity walk around London in the capable hands of local stunt man and celebrity Terry Cole, with all funds going to the Tsunami Appeal.

UK - One of the first feature-packed Denon DN-D6000 dual CD/MP3 players has been fitted into the high-profile Bar M near Piccadilly Circus, by Ed Manwaring of EM Communications. Owned by Glendola Leisure, Bar M acts as an annexe champagne lounge to CC-Club - on the site of the former Alien War at the Trocadero. EM Communications won the contract to fit the sound, based on their past knowledge of the site, knowing that the bar had to be open for midweek daytime trading, reverting to a dance venue in its own right Thursdays through Saturdays. At that point the hard disk background system would make way for the Denon playback.
