US-based video giants Nocturne Inc. recently approached their associates at PSL Concert Touring to support a major UK appearance by one of their long-standing clients - Guns ’N Roses. The group appeared at The London Arena on Bank Holiday Monday with PSL providing the complete LED and camera package.

Drawing on their new fleet of Barco DLite 7 LED screens, PSL provided the centre stage wall at 4.3m high and 3.6m wide with two PA walls both at 2.7m square. Lighting designer Gary Westcott added tremendous dramatic effect by having certain panels randomly removed and then blasting white light from behind through billowing smoke! PSL also provided a six-camera package with cameramen, along with the show graphics driven by DoReMi drives. Given the compatibility of the D-7 between PSL a

Pete Miles, formerly a director of The Spot Co and Flying Pig Systems, has joined Coemar UK as a non-executive director. It is his first foray back into the business since The Spot Co was sold to American giants the PRG Lighting Group, and he will retain his pre-existing shareholdings.

Miles, and Coemar UK’s Ian Kirby, have remained in close touch in recent years - and the timing of this decision, says Kirby, couldn’t have been better. "Peter’s knowledge and experience will not only provide a valuable input of ideas, but will help us establish greater links with the rock and roll world." The Spot Co had been one of the first companies to buy the NAT and their former MD has a long personal relationship with the brand. Miles added that having been impressed with Ian Kirby’s previous track record in the industry, his involvement in Coemar’s new UK o

Vertigo Rigging’s expertise and knowledge of the Royal Festival Hall came into its own when they transformed the famous concert hall venue into a full pros arch theatre for Raymond Gubbay’s popular, month-long production of Follies.

The project involved Vertigo undertaking an intense four-day working period during which time they installed large amounts of trussing and drapes. Follies - considered by many to be one of the greatest musicals of all time - was directed by Paul Kerryson and designed by Paul Farnsworth, and this was the first time the Sondheim classic has featured on a London stage for 15 years.

Follies’ scenic style transposes the audience to the crumbling Weissman Theatre, as memories from its glorious past reunite and are remembered one more time. The fact that the RFH needed to resemble a dilapidated venue at the end of the day didn’t make the

The assets acquired in Las Vegas and New Jersey are now being consolidated into existing Fourth Phase operations in those two locations. Meanwhile, those acquired in Toronto have resulted in the creation of a new business unit - Fourth Phase LTD. Beni Kantorovich, the general manager of Westsun Toronto will now continue in

Functioning as Ethernet audio bridges, EtherSound ES8in/ES8out offer an easy and affordable way to install and distribute up to 64 channels of high-quality audio using standard Ethernet switches and CAT5 cabling. "These two new products represent a milestone in the digitalization of audio installations, which have historically been built on traditional cabling, patch panels and matrices," said Digigram managing director Philippe Delacroix.

EtherSound ES8in injects eight analogue balanced audio signals into an EtherSound network, while the EtherSound ES8out extracts eight analogue audio signals out of an EtherSound network. The network set-up is as easy as plugging in an Ethernet cable, say Digigram. System set-up, control and re-configuration are operated remotely via straightforward PC software and no specific IT expertise is required. Applications include synchronous high-q

Germany's Arcus Lighting has strengthened its support of High End Systems and Flying Pig Systems products with the recent addition of Ruediger Haeming to its team. Haeming, a well-known industry professional, joined Arcus in March when the company became a High End Systems distributor in Germany. On July 1, he was appointed sales director and product manager for Arcus' inventory of HES products.

Says Haeming: "The close cooperation between manufacturer and professional users will be one of the main areas that my work at Arcus will concentrate on. The important requirements of the client can on the one hand be met by the product portfolio of High End Systems, Flying Pig Systems and CAST with WYSIWYG. Equally as important alongside this is the know how, of bringing these systems into individual use in a professional manner."

Haeming gained experience and professional respect

At the PLASA Show last week, Canegreen’s Yan Stile acquired a Yamaha PM1D digital desk from Yamaha commercial audio dealer, Marquee Audio, in time for the Toploader tour, which kicks off in early October. Stile, who heads one of the UK’s leading and longest-established rental companies, said he was happy to be using the PM1D given its popularity elsewhere at the top end of the touring circuit. In particular, he praised the support given to the sale by Yamaha’s Mike Case and Marquee Audio’s Glen Smith. "We have a long association with Yamaha products through the PM3000 and PM4000, and now the digital desk," he said. "It’s surprisingly cost-effective, with all the onboard digital effects, and frees up a lot of analogue space."

Andrew Thornton will be mixing Toploader’s sound at front-of-house, while a second PM1D will also be used f

In line with the increasing use of video projection in theatrical productions, together with the development of products such as High End’s Catalyst, DHA has put its vast knowledge and experience behind a new company, Scene Change.

Officially launched at this year’s PLASA, Scene Change has been a year in development: housed in a purpose-built studio at Waterloo Road in London, the company will employ state-of-the-art equipment in the design and creation of original digital video content specifically for projection. As a market leader in gobo and slide projection, DHA’s expertise in this area will prove invaluable.

Scene Change unites two market sectors - entertainment technology and video projection, but developments in these sectors are by no means in sync. The video industry has developed at a faster rate than entertainment technology and video clips are being u

ALC Truss is a new exhibitor at PLASA. Spawned from ALC, a Belgium-based sound and light service provider, ALC began manufacturing aluminium products to solve problems for its rental client base. Of most interest is the self-erecting 10.5m tower for line array PAs: load rated to 1000kg and TÜV approved, the tower can be erected by one person, using the lifting motor to raise the main mast. This is very neatly packaged: all components except the actual motor - that’s truss pins, hammer, gallows head and struts - travel securely on two 2.4m truss section dollies.

Austrian Truss Constructions (ATC) presented what looks to be an excellent modular outdoor stage roof system. Based on a regular 3D truss frame, the roof forms a grid using ladder trusses between with four-way steel node connectors. Although ATC doesn’t have official rating figures, it is confident the system can su

SSE Hire Ltd has been appointed an approved supplier of audio equipment and services to the National Union of Students Ents divisions. SSE Audio projects executive Malcolm Mellows commented: "We are delighted that the company has been awarded this recognized status. We have already been active in the NUS market - indeed we’ve commissioned large installed PA systems at Warwick and Sheffield Universities over the last year - but it’s good to be recognized to have achieved the standards required to be an approved supplier."

Barco Events had a striking display of its DLite LED walls and a Catalyst projection in the aisle. Two new products - the Events Controller and Viewscape - were launched at the show. The Events Controller enables the control of all daylight and projection displays, as well as other show equipment. This includes High End’s Catalyst, automated and conventional lighting devices, special effects, image generators, truss motors, hydraulics and more. It features Positracking, which enables repetition of position and status of all attributes at any point during a show. The Events Controller uses Barco’s ViewScape platform, which is a flexible and powerful image processing device that can handle multiple tasks including input switching, windowing, tiling, generating a wide range of video effects, edge-blending and format conversion.

Antari, the smoke machine company from the Far East, appointed Coemar UK as its distributor just prior to the show and, shortly afterwards, Jon Petts, previously synonymous with JEM, crossed the wire. Consequently, we can look forward to some interesting developments from that camp in the years to come. Right now it has a broad range of smoke machines for many applications, mostly entry level units. However, the new ‘X range’ includes four models - three foggers and a Fazer. The X310 Fazer is everything from hazer to fogger, hence the name. Three sizes of fogger feature in this range, these being the

Edwin Shirley Staging (ESS), the international staging and structures specialist, made a welcome return to London’s Hyde Park for the 2002 BBC Proms in the Park series. The event took place over the middle weekend of September.
