Following our recent news that Iain Elliott had departed the Canford Group, the company has announced the appointment of a new chief executive, Lawrence Jackson, previously managing director of Farnell. Group chairman Hugh Morgan Williams told PLASA Publishing: "Canford has come a long way since 1976 and the board of directors sees Lawrence's appointment as one which will lead us into the future, whilst safeguarding the basic principles upon which Canford was founded."

At the recent AGM of the Society of Television Lighting Designers (STLD), the Society honoured the support it had received over the past 25 years from Strand Lighting. Bernie Davies, secretary of the STLD, presented a special award to Alan Luxford, Strand's long-serving sales manager, who was present at the very first meeting of the STLD which was held at Strand Electric's King Street showroom in Covent Garden, and has supported the society ever since.

Sony projectors, plasma displays and television monitors are forming part of the AV display at a new sports bar in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. The ice hockey-themed Jagr's Sport Bar is the first in a new chain of restaurants to make extensive use of Sony AV systems, featuring LCD projection systems, wireless microphones, amplifiers and multi-speaker audio systems. The centrepiece of the bar is a large projection cube consisting of four VPL-S900E LCD projector screens, each delivering a powerful 1100 ANSI lumen output, suspended above the central bar. A further 34 video monitors are positioned around the walls, comprising both KV-14M1k and KV-21T1K units. The audio system includes SRP-S520 and SRP-S320 speaker systems plus an SRP-B900 subwoofer, powered by SRP series amplifiers. 2000 has begun well for the Oxford Sound Company, with contracts being confirmed with a cumulative value of over £1.5m for design and installation work. Included in the record-breaking month for the company are two voice-captioning suites for BBC Television in London, a fully digital re-build and re-location of all of BBC Aberdeen, sound and communications for all of RADA's three new theatres, as well as the new Soho Theatre in London, and the Derry Theatre in Londonderry, and a sound system for the Regents Park Theatre.

Audient plc has released three new variants of its ASP8024 console, along with news of a number of additional options. Frames to accommodate 24-, 48- and 60-input channels have been added to the original 36-channel frame size. An integral patchbay has also become an option and has been fitted with Neutrik bantam jack sockets and a D-Sub based studio systems interface. 144 tie lines are included as standard. A producer's table for applications requiring a dedicated script space can also be specified. The first 48-channel consoles shipped to UK and Dutch studios in December and a pair of 24-channel consoles will be delivered in early February, for use in mobile classical recording.

To see in the new millennium, three Megascreens were supplied by Unitek direct to Birmingham City Council to be positioned in two city centre locations. One 18sq.m LED screen was situated adjacent to the main stage, situated at one end of the square, whilst the other screen was positioned in the middle of the square, screening performances by acts such as The Honeys, Roy Wood of Wizard and Sir Cliff Richard to a crowd of 20,000 people. The third screen, measuring 32sq.m, relayed the action to the crowd 'overspill' in Victoria Square. Additional shows including family events and an open air disco sponsored by BRMB utilised the screens until January 2.

Britannia Row Productions ended the year by supplying the sound system and technical staff for the New Year's Eve opening celebrations at London's Millennium Dome. The event was broadcast to millions across the world and although the invited audience at the Dome numbered only 15,000, the area to be covered by sound was considerably larger than a standard arena. Given the source material and the dispersion needed, it was decided to augment the main 48-pair Flashlight left and right system with six Flashlight delays. Floodlight, and the new TCS-56 enclosures, were used for audience infill. Brit Row's touring clients during 1999 included Robbie Williams, Simply Red, The Pet Shop Boys, Chemical Brothers and Nine Inch Nails, with events covered including Glastonbury, The Brits, The MTV EMA awards and the Miss World competition.

Turbosound's latest loudspeaker management system, the LMS-D6, is now shipping. Based on the XTA DP226, it is a compact and powerful DSP-based programmable crossover, supplied with factory-loaded programmes for use with Turbosound Flashlight, Floodlight, QLight, and HiLight series loudspeaker enclosures, and TFM series floor monitors.One of the first large purchases was by AVAB-CAC in Norway, which has 12 LMS-D6 units in daily use with Flashlight and Floodlight on events and tours. Asle Nilsen, AVAB-CAC's managing director commented: "The sound quality is fantastic - the LMS-D6 has made Floodlight sound like a new system."

Racing Channel broadcaster, Satellite Information Services, has upgraded its studio equipment to include Trantec radio systems. The installation included a Trantec S5000IEM transmitter with two receivers and two Trantec S5000L systems, under the supervision of SIS's installation engineer, Julian Stevens. The lapel mics give the two presenters greater freedom of mobility than they have previously enjoyed and they will be receiving information via the IEM in-ear receivers.

Turbosound has announced the appointment of ADI (Audio Distributors International) as their exclusive distributor for Canada. The appointment follows a careful selection process undertaken by Turbosound managing director, Alan Wick. ADI will be exhibiting with Turbosound at the Canadian Music Week exhibition in March.

Northern Ireland-based Moonlighting Sound and Lighting has installed a Cerwin Vega! system into the Dundonald International Ice Bowl in readiness for the UK Figure-skating Championships, to be televised by BBC's Grandstand. The company supplied 16 Cerwin Vega! PS-15s to create a two-tiered central cluster above the ice-rink to augment the PA in the 2000-capacity venue. The cabinets were initially installed on a trial basis but following the positive feedback from the BBC, the UK Figure-skating committee and the competitors themselves, a decision was taken to keep the cluster as a permanent fixture.

Sony Broadcast & Professional Europe has appointed Rob Sherman as head of its Large Screen Display Group. His career with Sony spans 11 years: he spent four in the Middle East, working to establish a Sony division in the region, followed by two years as head of Sony Broadcast & Professional in Portugal.

The second ExpoLatina trade show and conference takes place from May 23-25 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami. The show floor boasts more than 200 international manufacturers and distributors of products geared to live performance, film and TV and themed environments. The accompanying conference programme (presented primarily in Spanish) features round-table discussions, project portfolios and hands-on training sessions presented by industry professionals who work or have an interest in Latin American business.

Star Hire (Event Services) has expanded its hire fleet with the addition of a further CS 10-08 mobile trailer stage. The trailer, which erects to form a 10m by 8m stage, is the smallest of Star Hire's mobile stages, which also include the SS 11-09 and the CS 15-12.

Bruce Jordahl has left High End Systems to become the editor of a new magazine - Pro Light and Staging News. The monthly title will address the touring and concert industries and will focus its editorial coverage principally on the US and Canadian markets.

New units and accessories have been added to the Scanner range of budget radio microphone systems, distributed in the UK by John Hornby Skewes & Co. The Scanner S3 non-diversity single-channel VHF radio microphone system features quartz-locked, fixed-frequency operation (160 - 250MHz), with a compact half-rack receiver unit. Dynamic range is rated at >100dB.Also new to the range, the Scanner S4-AD plug-in system converts any wired microphone with an XLR connector, dynamic or electret format, to full wireless operation, providing around 15 hours of operation time from a single 9v battery.

Yamaha has announced the availability of the D24 digital multi-track recorder and the CDR1000 professional CD recorder. The D24 is a 24-bit, 96kHz professional system aimed at recording, editing, mastering and post production applications for television and film. Based on 3.5" magneto-optical disks, the D24 offers 16-bit, 20-bit and 24-bit eight-track simultaneous record and play capability at 48kHz and four-track record and play at 96kHz.The CDR1000 CD recorder is a 2U rack-mount audio recorder providing both record and re-write, sample rate converter and word clock input, aimed at studio / pro recording markets.

ARX Systems has announced the appointment of S2CEB, the pro audio distribution division of CAE, France's largest manufacturer of cables and connectors, as its new exclusive distributor for France.

Color Kinetics Incorporated, manufacturers of full spectrum digital lighting, has announced the completion of its third round of equity financing, with Deutsche Bank as the lead investor. This round featured significant participation from the company's existing investors as well as from several new investors, and has raised over $13 million for the company. This latest round of capital will enable Color Kinetics to extend the digital technologies in its growing patent portfolio into new markets. It will broaden its product range based on its LED-based Chromacore technology, which has recently been awarded a US Patent - the first issued in its field. The patent covers standalone and network control of multiple LEDs for illumination and display. According to industry analysts, the worldwide LED market is estimated at $1.8 billion, with strong forecasts for rapid growth.

The recent Sports Awards of the Century gala evening at the Vienna State Opera House, with live performances from Eros Ramazotti and Sir Cliff Richard among others, was lit by a large automated rig supplied by Vari-Lite Austria. The rig included 18 VL5, eight VL6, 16 VL6B and 20 VL7 luminaires, programmed and operated by lighting designer Norbert Wolfsberger. The production company for the event was Cataclysm.

Spirit by Soundcraft will be launching the new 324 Live digital console at the LIVE! Show at Alexandra Palace, London, on 9-10 February. The 324 Live is a fully-featured digital desk in a characteristically compact frame.
