USA - A historic gathering of rock's biggest legends known as the Desert Trip festival took place during the first two weekends of October. Showcasing six of the biggest acts in rock history, Desert Trip pushed each of these headliner acts to stand out. One act that is especially recognized for his outstanding visual design is Roger Waters, and his Desert Trip effort was no exception.

During a tune-up concert held in Mexico City a couple of weeks before Desert Trip, Waters used 10 Syncrolite SXL's to wow the audience with their power and punch. For Desert Trip the count was increased to 50 fixtures that were lined up behind the stage to create incredible effects that could be seen for miles above the Empire Polo Club field, the site of the festival.

UK - Terry Tew Sound and Light, specialists in audio visual hire and sales for events, conferences and broadcast, has recently purchased microphone hire company, Origin Audio.

Origin, which was formed over 24 years ago by Stephen Higgs, specialises exclusively in the hire of Schoeps microphones.

"I started the business when I left the BBC, slowly building up the company and investing all profits back into stock," says Stephen. "I decided to invest solely in Schoeps because I've always used them and believe they're the best and most versatile microphones on the market."

Origin now has a stock of over 150 Schoeps microphones and more than 140 active rods and cables, but it is not only this that has made it a success.

USA - Jimmy Buffett is about to wrap his I Don't Know Tour, an ironic name considering how iconic the singer and performances have become. Having toured every year since 1976, the self-proclaimed beach bum knows how to entertain his legion of fans, many of whom make the trek to see his shows many times over.

Bandit Lites is the long-time lighting vendor of Buffett, and helps transform every stage into a paradise for both the audience and the performer. Lighting designer Steve Hoover first toured with Buffett in the early 1990s and has been the tour's lighting designer and director for about the last five years.

"When I started, I first built upon the familiar look of the show, and now it has evolved into a collaborated effort between lighting and video, bouncing things back and forth so we match and compliment the looks," Hoover said.

For decades the castle has been illuminated by conventional discharge lamps, which is a costly affair in regards to both power and maintenance. Norway - A Martin Audio MLA Mini Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array has been installed at the University of Oslo (UiO) flagship auditorium - replacing the previous PA system.

The integration was carried out by Atendi AS, Martin Audio's pan-Scandinavian distributors, and the installation itself is in the Aula, the University's famous ceremonial hall, known for its festive events, concerts and art. In fact, from 1947 until 1989 it hosted the Nobel Peace Prize, but when that auditorium gradually became too small, the ceremony was moved to the Oslo City Hall.

The Aula's connection with Nobel today revolves around the Nobel Lecture, which is frequently presented there, while many other civic dignitaries also give lectures. USA EAW has announced the addition of Bryan DiFabio to the application engineering team at the company's Whitinsville headquarters. The announcement was made by Adam Shulman, director of marketing and application engineering for EAW.

As an applications specialist, DiFabio will provide technical expertise to EAW customers worldwide. The application engineering team can provide services ranging from simple product selection and appropriate product usage to assisting with the development of a more comprehensive system solution, including acoustic modelling and design proposal development.

UK The Young Vic theatre played host to lighting designers and technicians from across the world this week, who had gathered for the presentation of the second International Fellowship by The Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) to South African lighting designer Mannie Manim.

The prestigious international fellowship was presented to Manim by ALD president, Richard Pilbrow. Honoured for his lengthy list of credits in lighting design, Manim, throughout an exceptional career, has also been a company manager, producer, technical director, founder, administrator and trustee of many theatre organisations.

During the ceremony, lighting designer and ALD member, Declan Randall, read tributes from the peers of the South African lighting designer.
