UK - Each year, the very best in television is recognised at the National Television Awards. Taking place in late January, the awards, which are voted for by the British public, honour television shows, actors and presenters in a range of categories. Producers Indigo TV bring together a variety of technical suppliers to support both the glamorous red carpet arrival space and the awards at The O2 in London, which are broadcast live on ITV.
Continuing a long-running relationship, PRG XL Video supplied both video and lighting technology for this year’s event. Video account manager Paul Wood has worked with Indigo TV’s Andy Bates for a number of years, and this year supplied the production team with the main LED backdrop made up of ROE Visual 7mm LED. The screen is used for all the main title logos, category information and video clips in the hall.

USA - In a world where churches are popping up in spaces that once served as anything from a bank to a department store, First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is a throwback to an earlier time when houses of worship were built to be just that. Until recently, the audio system there was a throwback as well, until the congregation turned to CCI Solutions to design and install a new system centred on Kiva and X Series enclosures from L-Acoustics.
Built in 1927 and modelled on the Palace of Ducal in Italy, the historical landmark is reminiscent of a European cathedral - deep and narrow with soaring 60ft ceilings. And, in addition to services for a number of congregations, it regularly serves as a shooting location for films and TV shows. All of this created a unique audio challenge.

USA - Rain, cold and hail weren’t what anyone had in mind when the 2017 edition of Total Structures’ Truss, Hoist, Rigging and Outdoor Structures workshop announced its January dates, but that is what everyone got. The school’s 26 attendees, representing 14 companies, did not let the weather get in the way of a great week of learning during the five-day programme.
Held at the company’s California headquarters from 23-27 January, this year’s workshop would cover five days of instruction and discussion covering topics ranging from the fundamentals of truss design and inspection to advanced rigging math calculations for rigging supervisors. In between, the course provided training on outdoor structure design, discussion of American National Standards developed for the entertainment industry, and hands on training with the full range of Pointman Electric Chain Hoists.

USA - Japanese alt-rock back One OK Rock recently wrapped a January run in North America promoting their new album Ambitions with a lighting package provided by Bandit Lites and designed by Jesse Henke.
The band, comprised of Takahiro Moriuchi, Toru Yamashita, Ryota Kohama and Tomoya Kanki are known for their stellar vocals, energetic performances and diehard fans who turn out in incredible numbers.
With a blank slate to design with (except for direction regarding incorporating logo scrims) Henke created a dynamic floor package with six towers across the stage with six T pipe down riggers flown from existing house trusses.
“I wanted the relatively small amount of gear to look big, so I spread it out evenly across the stage vertically and horizontally,” explained Henke. “I went with horizontal lines of fixtures at multiple levels.”

Canada - The Hershey Centre is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Home to the Ontario Hockey League's Mississauga Steelheads and the NBA Development League's Raptors 905, the facility also hosts a wide variety of events, ranging from live music and internationally-televised figure skating championships to boxing and indoor rodeos.
In response to guest feedback on its nearly two-decade old distributed sound system and concerns that it might fail during an event, an extensive upgrade brought "major-league" sound to the Hershey Centre.

USA - Sensaphonics has presented Toni Sheree of Los Angeles with a new 3D-U AARO in-ear monitor system valued at $1500. As a purchaser of Musicians Earplugs during the NAMM show, she was entered in the end-of-show drawing, and her entry came up as the winner.
Sheree is vocalist for the LA-based electro-funk duo, Toni & Ash, and can’t wait to get her hands on the new 3D-U AARO. “I was so excited to hear from Sensaphonics that I won,” she exclaimed. “We just released a record, OK Cool, and I can't wait to use my new in-ears in our show. Austin, Texas duo Tritonal can lay down thundering dance tracks with the best of them, but then with the figurative snap of the fingers, they can just as easily slide into more melodic, feathery and peaceful piano-driven songs. Keeping pace with Tritonal’s winding musical journey at a stop on the group’s aptly named Painting With Dreams Tour is a multi-faceted lightshow created by Brett Angstadt of Round Peg Productions that features a collection of LED fixtures from Chauvet Professional.
Tritonal’s lighting designer Aaron Kovelman of The Hauss Collective brought Angstadt on board to handle lighting for the tour. When the tour stopped at the legendary Echo Stage, the largest dedicated concert venue in Washington DC, Angstadt used Nexus panels to fill out the look of the stage.

UK - Using ground-breaking LED technology from SGM, an interactive light commission entitled IN LIGHT: Illuminating Capability Brown’s Landscape, was created by light artist Laurent Louyer from Creatmosphere.
In November 2016, various celebratory events took place in 120 different parks and sites all across the UK. This was to mark the 300th anniversary of renowned British Landscape Architect, Capability Brown, an historically important figure known as “England’s greatest gardener”. Many of his more than 170 park designs still exist today. Amongst these is Compton Verney, which also houses an independent national art gallery.

Singapore - Over 400 Robe moving lights boosted the magic and spectacle of the 45th Singapore Chingay Parade to celebrate Chinese New Year – The Year of the Rooster.
Javier Tan’s colourful high-impact lighting design matched the glamour, glitz and exuberance of the high profile public event, featuring an ebullient cast of 8000, creatively directed by Fan Dong Kai and staged at the F1 Pit Building in the city centre.
The glittering show was organized by the People’s Association (PA). It celebrated the diversity and multi-cultural nature of the nation’s population and was watched live by President, Dr. Tony Tan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, plus assorted political, dignitaries and VIPs together with approximately 200,000 excited members of the public over two nights. The 2017 course will be primarily delivered from South Thames College in Wandsworth, with some sessions being held at Britannia Row’s main headquarters in Twickenham and others on-site at Britannia Row shows. The tutors delivering the course will, as usual, be Britannia Row staff and freelance engineers and technicians.

UK - A variety of Allen & Heath digital mixing solutions have recently been installed by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, including dLive S Class and GLD digital mixing systems.
The college is one of the oldest surgical corporations in the world - tracing its origins back to 1505 - and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and advancement in surgical practice through its interest in education and training.
Located in the college’s flagship Main Hall venue, the dLive system was specified for its ability to allow a compact Allen & Heath DM48 MixRack set-up controlled via iPad (with A&H’s Director app) for smaller events and meetings, while a dLive S3000 mixing surface can be employed for more involved productions.

The Netherlands - Integrated Systems Europe 2017 saw 1,192 of the world’s leading AV equipment vendors and service suppliers showcase the latest technology for the digital signage, unified communications, audio, smart building, residential and education sectors.
On the show floor, the atmosphere was decidedly upbeat. Exhibitors, including 202 making their ISE debuts, were seen increasingly to present their products and solutions in ‘real world’ scenarios, designed to meet the needs of the increasing numbers of end users visiting the show.
Registered visitor attendees to ISE 2017 were at an all-time high at 73,413. This represents an 11.7% increase over the 2016 edition. Attendees came from 150 different countries, reflecting the show’s global reach and influence, while almost 600 registered attendees were from the press and media.

South Africa - Part one of the 2016-17 multi-artist musical spectacular Afrikaans is Groot, produced by Coleske Artists was staged at Moreleta Park Church in Pretoria, South Africa, featuring some of the best Afrikaans performers in the country. The show will play at Cape Town’s Grandwest Arena in March 2017.
It featured a lighting co-design by Joshua Cutts of Visual Frontier and Chris Bolton of Keystone Productions. Nearly 160 Robe moving lights – including the new Spiiders and Spikies - were included on the rig.
The 12 new Spiiders came straight from customs clearance at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg to the venue, together with 12 Robe Squares, all part of a larger new Robe investment by rental company, MGG.
MGG was the full production technical supplier for the event which ran for 11 sold-out shows at Moreleta.

USA - CAST wysiwyg has been touring with one of the most talked about Indie bands, Wilco, whose music has been described as somewhere between experimental rock and alternative country. The band has gained kudos for the 2016 album, Schmilco, and for consistently putting on distinctive shows. The tour has just returned from Europe and is continuing now through America.
Lighting designer Jeremy Roth previsualized their set list using wysiwyg Perform. The set design, conceived by Jeff Tweedy and fabricated by Valerie Light of Infinite Scenic with textiles provided by Matt Biringer of Rose Brand, executed with tour manager Eric Frankhouser allowed Roth’s lighting and scenic design to highlight the mood that the team wished to convey.
