UK - Preparations for the 2017 PLASA Rigging Conference, which takes place on Monday 18 September during the PLASA Show, are well under way. This year’s conference is in a new mould, targeting a broader audience through the addition of topics on both production and safety issues and encourages discussion from a wider range of contributors than before. New additions to the line-up include head of technical operations for the Ambassador Theatre Group Stuart Graham and John Green, European health and safety director for Laing O’Rourke.
Stuart has supported the conference since it began in 2009 and was keen to be a part of this year’s expanded offering.

UK Manufacturer of flame retardant fabrics, drapery and stage engineering solutions, J&C Joel, has announced a new structure for its projects department.
Ben Richardson-Owen, previously Middle East project manager, has been promoted to head of projects (International) alongside Fraser Davidson, previously UK and Europe project manager, who has now stepped into the role as head of projects (UK and Europe).
Ben has worked for the company for six years and worked in the company’s Dubai office for five years, returning to the UK office last year.
Fraser has worked for the company for 17 years, starting out as an apprentice installing J&C Joel products all over the world - alongside J&C Joel’s CEO James Wheelwright - before eventually moving into the coordination and management side of Project delivery.

The Natural History Museum reveals a new-look Hintze Hall which features a stunning 25.2 metre blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling and spectacularly diving into the space. This is part of the museum’s biggest transformation it its 136-year history which includes hundreds of new specimens which have been chosen to celebrate the wonder and beauty of the natural world, from the origins of the universe, to the story of evolution and the diversity in the world today.Ten choice specimens have also been arranged in ground floor alcoves – known as Wonder Bays – including a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite and a Mantellisaurus skeleton.

The Netherlands - Inspired by American blues festivals, where audiences enjoy a rich diet of blues music with a side order of spare ribs, Ribs&Blues is an annual event held in the Dutch town of Raalte. USA - Owing to high demand (with tickets selling out before the line-up was even announced), the Electric Forest Music Festival doubled its days and held its woodland adventure over two consecutive weekends, with thousands making their way back into the effervescent woods that feel straight out of a fairytale dream.
Lighting designer Jeff Ravitz returned to design the lighting for the Sherwood Court Stage with a lighting package provided by Bandit Lites.
In designing the stage where artists such as Lido, The Floozies, Tycho and Black Tiger Sex Machine would perform, Ravitz focused on updating the overall look while still maintaining the aspects of the design that made last year’s set up successful, foremost of which was ensuring the system was ‘all things to all bands’ (within reason and budget).

Australia - The Wombats are currently celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their first album, touring Australia with Groovin’ the Moo and performing a few side shows. For the past five years FOH engineer Pete Bartlett has worked with the band as well as his other main act The Pretenders.
The band members and crew were delighted to play a couple of shows at the Sydney Opera House, performing memorable and joyous shows. Let’s face it, it’s not often you witness six full-grown humans dancing around in wombat suits on stage whilst confetti guns spray over the crowd.

UK - Audio specialist tube uk has invested in a new Sennheiser D6000 radio mic system which debuted on the world premiere of Israeli artist Yael Bartana’s compelling live performance experimentWhat if Women Ruled the World? As this incisive and insightful work was also multi-track recorded each night, potentially for a future film project, tube’s Melvyn Coote decided the time was right to purchase the new radio technology from Sennheiser. Sound for the piece was designed by Tel Aviv based Daniel Meir.
As the set-up evolved in discussions with Daniel, well known for his work in the world of films and sonic art and performance, Melvyn ordered the 12 beltpack transmitters and six D6000 dual receivers complete with all their infrastructure which he describes as “revolutionary” in terms of technology.

Bruno Mars has just completed a three-month European leg of his 24K Magic World Tour. In that time, the crew has barely been able to catch a breath, explains FOH engineer, Chris Rabold.
“We've been all over Europe, and that's only the end of this part,” Rabold reports, adding that the US is next – and probably a couple of one-off shows and TV performances will happen in between.

UK - Star Events supplied the cavernous Mayfield Depot with seats in two custom-built arenas for the Manchester International Festival (MIF), which wrapped on Saturday.
The first was for the world premiere of Yael Bartana’s What If Women Ruled The World, the second for choreographer Boris Charmatz's 10,000 Gestures, one of MIF’s final fixtures.
Set opposite Manchester Piccadilly, Mayfield Depot is the under platform area of a semi-derelict Victorian railway station. Boarded up for years there was minimal natural light as Star Events built a single stand of 430 QP Grandstand seats. To accommodate Saygel & Schreiber’s What if Women Ruled The World set design, the system included a 166mm rake onto the existing ‘stage’ plinth and around the venue roof support columns.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Martin Audio has appointed SD Sistemi as its new distributor for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The agreement was borne out of several meetings at trade shows this year.
The Bosnian specialists had first approached Martin Audio with a view to cooperation at ISE in Amsterdam. “During that show we attended the presentation of their new products which were really amazing - and we decided there and then that we wanted these products in our portfolio,” stated SD Sistemi CEO, Dragan Šukalo.

Bohemian Rhapsody - The long-in-the-works Queen biopic is “finally happening,” according to a post on the band’s official website. The project has been around in some form or another for over 10 years now, and late last year, after first Sacha Baron Cohen and then Ben Whishaw departed the film due to creative differences, Mr. Robot star Rami Malek was cast as Freddie Mercury.
According to Queen’s Roger Taylor and Brian May, who are serving as executive music producers, “Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project. He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful.” Bryan Singer is directing, and the film is “as-close-as-that” to the start of shooting, with pre-production beginning this week to prepare for principal photography in London as soon as mid-September.

Europe - Ayrton has announced the appointment of Jerad Garza as the latest member of its growing International sales team.
Originating from Texas, Garza entered the industry as show technician with Gemini LSV in Dallas where he spent 17 years learning all aspects of show production, before progressing to the position of sales director and project manager. Roles in European & international sales followed, firstly with Solaris and, most recently, with High End Systems.
Based in South Germany, Garza’s role will be to focus on supporting Ayrton’s existing international clients, in addition to establishing and growing new ones, and will have additional responsibility for selling demo and excess stock worldwide.

Europe - Panasonic has launched a new range of indoor display panels engineered for digital signage.
The Full HD SF2 range replaces the LF8 indoor signage series and features new data cloning software, accessed via LAN, which allows for the copying of menu settings and adjusted values from the original display to multiple others.
The E-LED LCD display is available in four sizes (43, 49, 55 and 65-inch), the adaptable screen features wide-view IPS panel technology with 450 cd/m2.
