UK - The winners of the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) Theatre Awards 2018 have been announced.
The awards ceremony took place on 6 June (Wednesday) at Alexandra Palace, London.
The five awards for sound, lighting, engineering, widget and stand were complemented by a special award to mark the retirement of Roger Fox, the theatre show's director, acknowledging his 40 years work on building and developing the event since 1978.

The winners, who were picked by an experienced jury of working practitioners and industry peers, are listed below, along with the jury's comments:

UK - HSL, technical partner for Hope Mill Theatre, has updated the lighting rig of the Manchester production space with a number of profile, Fresnel and flood fixtures.
Hope Mill Theatre, an alternative arts production space based at a former Victorian cotton mill in Ancoats, partnered with HSL two years ago. HSL undertook a structural survey followed by the design and installation of a trussing mother grid in the roof.
While an assortment of lighting kit has been supplied over the last two years, this this has now been reviewed and updated to include a standard rig of ETC Source Four profiles, 1K Fresnels, and Acclaim Fresnels together with a variety of floods.
Moving lights and other specials will be supplied as required by the individual productions. The original mothergrid has also just been extended with some new sections, giving more capacity for the quick

USA - The sixth annual K-LOVE Fan Awards returned to Nashville for an evening honouring contemporary Christian artist and hailed as the only fan-voted awards in Christian entertainment. Bandit Lites provided the lighting for the event which featured 15 live performances and appearances including Natalie Grant, Hillsong Worship and Casting Crowns.
With the awards taking place at the Opry House, home to live broadcasts of the Grand Ole Opry, production designer Scott Moore and lighting designer Mark Carver had to fashion a high-energy rig that could be installed quickly enough to allow for programming by Carver, programmer Andre Petrus and media programmer Tony Fransen, and then effectively disappear for the Opry’s Tuesday, Friday and Saturday night shows.

South Africa - DWR Distribution’s SOS Charity Fund has helped finance the hand surgery of Vibe Audio & Backline owner Vincent Joubert, with further financial backing promised by DWR.
Joubert, who has worked at festivals and alongside South African artists Jo Black, Ray Dylan, Liezel Pieterse and Deon Groot, developed septic arthritis in a joint of a finger he injured a decade ago.
“Ten years ago, I hurt my finger and the joint was damaged,” Joubert explains. “Initially, the doctor was going to amputate, and I was actually relieved as I was in such immense pain. It was difficult to function.”
The surgery, which could not have taken place in a government hospital, was enabled by an SOS Charity Fund donation of R7,000 (£400).

Belgium - Versuz, a leading nightclub in the Hasselt area and one of the best 50 clubs worldwide according to DJ Mag, updated its lighting rig following an extensive renovation.
Fairlight, distributor for CLF Lighting and Martin Professional in Benelux, was responsible for installing the new equipment in the venue’s Main Room. Together with Bert Gemels and his technical team they managed to dismantle the old construction and install the complete new setup within four days. Together with one programming day, the club was up and running for another weekend full of events.
Yves Smolders, general manager of Versuz, reports: “From the very first contact I enjoyed working together with the Fairlight team. They all have a down to earth approach and think along with our budget and needs. I am convinced that this is just the start of a long-term cooperation.”

Philippines - Cove Manila is Southeast Asia’s newest entertainment space, a 9,000-sqm, $200m entertainment venue touted as the largest indoor beach club in the world. South Africa - Three all-female teams of young lighting designers scooped the top accolades at this year’s St Mary’s Battle of the Bands. The annual competition was hosted on 17 May at The Edge Theatre at Saint Mary’s, Johannesburg and featured two celebrity judges attending the finale - Prime Circle’s Marco Gomes and The Parlotone’s Neil Pauw.
In the lighting design category, first place went to Saint Mary’s Zaneli Steeneveldt, who was assisted by Ghita Economakis and Sanam Soni. In second place, St Mary’s Erin Kersten was assisted by Ella Roseveare, Amy Leishman, Jordan Dart and Caitlin Bloom. Third place was awarded to Parktown Girls, a joint effort by Leia Singh, Lailah Naidoo and Roxana van Weely.

UK - Glasson Electronics designed and manufactured a lighting display for the Bicentenary Gala celebration at London’s Old Vic theatre.
The Lancaster-based lighting specialist installed over 1,200 individually-controllable LED units based on its DFS3000 system.
The technology enables a large numbers of lamps and LED units to be controlled using standard light fittings and cable.

Woodman has over 20 years in the live audio industry and is responsible for audio design and engineering on a series of high-profile events and productions. DWA’s rental equipment tailored to the corporate events market is now integrated within the RSH hire fleet.

Argentina - In 2017, American punk rockers Green Day undertook a year-long world tour taking in Australia, Europe, Canada, USA and South America. In November when the band arrived at the Estadio Velez Stadium in Argentina, audience, crew and band were in for a real treat and an audio first.
Here, the PA was the d&b SL-Series, GSL System, the new member of the d&b large format PA family making its South American debut. BALS Buenos Aires Live Shows, one of Argentina’s largest rental firms, was the local provider for sound and lighting. Their GSL system arrived just the week before the Green Day Show – and the results were “exceptional”.

The deal reflects an “ambitious growth strategy”, which has seen the Tamworth flight case manufacturer invest in “product, people and process”. Sweden - Hip hop band Hov1 recently played a series of mid-sized local venues of around 3,000-capacity on their first Until Next Time production tour.
Jakob Larsson was responsible for the lighting, drawing heavily on LED fixtures from GLP. Taking advantage of the advances in technology the LD was able to requisition 22 of the manufacturer’s JDC1 hybrid strobe from rental company Bright Group Sweden, along with 80 GLP X4 atoms and 24 X4 Bar 20.
Larsson explained his design concept. “As there are only four people on stage, I needed to create big looks, using light as a décor element as well. We decided to go with a ‘pod’ design and we also decided early in the process that we needed an A-stage and B-stage to bring the show closer to the audience. UK - Rental and production specialist Adlib’s lighting department has invested in eight new Zero 88 FLX S24 consoles.
Simon Pettitt, lighting technical manager at the busy Liverpool headquartered company, and his team made the decision after becoming aware of the console and realising its massive potential as a cost-effective control package for small-to-medium shows, events and installations.
Typically, Adlib envisions using these consoles - offering optimised control for up to 48 x LED sources, moving lights and conventionals - on a wide range of smaller corporate events, smaller / alternative festival stages, house of worship events and dry hires to schools and colleges.

UK - Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance is the top drama school for student mobility in the world, according to U-Multirank research.
The College is also one of only two creative arts specialist higher education institutions in the top 25 globally-ranked universities for student mobility, the other one being the Glasgow School of Art.
U-Multirank, a European Union-funded world university ranking that classifies 1,614 universities across various performance indicators, released the top 25 performers in nine of its indicators this week.

UK - The Beginners, play-within-a-play featuring 4 to 10 year-olds, opens a window into the boundless and colourful imaginative powers of childhood.
Adding impact to this play, and making its fantastical characters come to life even more vividly during a production at London’s Unicorn Theatre, is the rich assortment of colours created by Zoe Spurr, using Chauvet Professional COLORado 2 Zoom Tour fixtures.

Europe - Enrique Iglesias strutted his high-octane stagecraft for the latest European section of his Enrique Live tour, complete with a slick, eye-catching visual design by creative director Travis Shirley.
The lighting for the ongoing world tour is specified by Travis as part of his production design which also incorporates video and set, with Robe as the first choice of moving lights.
For this section of the tour, which visited the Czech Republic, Greece and Slovenia, BMFL Spots, Pointes and Spiiders featured prominently on the rig, together with six Robe BMFL Spots used for an integrated follow spotting solution, all provided by Czech Republic based rental house ZL Production, working for promoters BG Arts.

UK - The Trent Vineyard church located just two miles from Nottingham has one of the largest auditoriums in the region.
With a capacity to welcome over 1,200 people for Sunday services, talks, and music events means, the venue can also be utilised as a conference centre.
In 2017 the venue was expanded and refurbished, the church turned to leading AV supplier SFL to design and install a system capable of meeting their various needs, along with those of a fast-turnaround corporate conferencing clientele.
